Anyone who has been reading the thread on the potential Mullaloo bans will be aware that Joondalup Council will be discussing a motion to ban kitesurfing at the council meeting this evening.

A number of kiters from the local area, kiters from outside of the area, representatives from WAKSA and the local users group are all attending the meeting tonight in order to show that we are apposed to this motion and that we are proactive in ensuring kitesurfing should not be banned.

If kitesurfing is allowed to be banned on Mullaloo there is a fair chance that other councils could follow suit and proceed to ban kitesurfing on the beaches WHERE YOU regularly enjoying kiting (Woodies, Melville, Cottesloe & Scarborough are obvious targets).

We are therefore asking for as much support from Perth based kitesurfers as well as local Mullaloo kitesurfers and would urge as many people as possible to attend the council meeting tonight.

The Meeting will be held in the Council Chamber, Joondalup Civic Centre, Boas Avenue, Joondalup, at 7pm sharp. Free car parking is available in the undercover parking area.

I know this request has been posted on the other thread but potentially non-Mullaloo kiters may not have bothered to read that thread all the way through.

Your attendance at the meeting tonight is essential to show support for the local kitersurfers at Mullaloo which in turn will benefit kitesurfing in Perth!

Cheers
Dave

I sit here and type this from the council chambers. Our numbers are poor and there are many local residents here who don't like us. If you have the ability, we need you here NOW!

Please come and show some strength of numbers.

This was sprung on us pretty bad. (I've only kited at Mullaloo once but if one beach goes then it sets a precedent)

Looks like we may have won first round in having the whole scenario investigated with due course and diligence reporting on the impact of kitesurfing on the public beaches of Mullaloo.

The move to ban was defeated 10 to 1 in favour of the report which could take up to another 6 months.

We've won the battle but not the war. All councilors unanymous in that we get further consultation.

YAY. For now..... Thanks to Cr Young!

Good winds,

yer that was a lucky break on our behalf that cr Young took our side and showed that the member moving to have kiting banned skipped many steps.

It's up to locals now to strictly regulate the spot, dont be scared to tell people f*cking up to f*ck off to another spot and to clearly point out that people should stay 200m DOWNWIND of the club house and flags. We will need to show we can self regulate and keep dangerous incidents involving public to a bare minimum.

We need a squeeky clean image showing good self regulation and responsibilty of both groups and individuals as well as efforts to educate public when they are and aren't in danger etc.

Thanks to all who attended (we ended up with 30 or more people), special thanks to Dave, Pat, Phil and Chris who all gave statements on our behalf.

And an extra special thanks to Cr Young who has at least ensured that there will be proper consultation of all parties involved before any decision is reached.

Round one to us, however there was a fair amount of people in support of having us banned so it is not over yet. I urge everyone to do the right thing if you are going to kite at Mullaloo (or anywhere else for that matter), and if you see anyone doing the wrong thing please have a polite word to them and steer them in the right direction.

Ahhh I think it's time for a beer.

On behalf of the MUGS committee I would like to thank everyone who turned up at the council meeting tonight in support and also to the meeting yesterday. I have never been to a council meeting before but I am betting that rapturous rounds of applause after the 3 statements in favour of kitesurfing, when Cnr Young said her piece and when the motion was rejected, may not be a common occurance in council chambers. :-) What it did though was demonstrate how passionate we are, which is great.

We now have the opportunity through consultation to provide logical and demonstratable arguments to counteract their currently unfounded allegations.

As lead of MUGS I urge all kitesurfers who either kite, or plan to kite at Mullaloo to refresh your memory of the local guidelines which have been put in place in association with WAKSA (link below).

Thanks to those who attended. Apologies as me and my family have been pretty ill with the flu.

I don't kite Mullaloo but feel at one with responsible kiters who do. Kiters have got something special as a community and it is good to see us being more accurately represented by responsible people, after the irresponsible or ignorant few have created a bad impression.

I appreciate the leadership here too, despite our 'free spirits' and general disdain for getting 'too organised' when we're just trying to have some fun!

I think there is a lot of interest in our sport from the general public (and probably ignorance) so I'm always happy to stop and chat
... well, after a session... to other curious beach users.

At times I've also needed to be more forthright in letting curious people know not to approach the kite / lines, etc eg, on a previously empty area of beach, when the kite is down at sea and kayakers or windsurfers come close, etc.

just a 2 cents question: did the people "against" kitesurfing had valid arguments? It could be wise to take these into account seriously, and act to address their concerns (or have proposuals ready), so at the next round they would have no more argument... and they will probably be happy with an alternate solution than just a ban (which is a very extrem solution).

I'm guessing that the acronym 'MUGS' stands for mullaloo users groupS, or some such obscure thing ??
Great name guys.

Sorry - no way out of babysitting last night. Unfortunately my squids going feral [}:)][}:)] might not have been the positive 'kiters are responsible with family' vibe that was needed.

Top marks for all who could make it.
