G'day all. Its been a while since I posted anything though I have been checking the forums every day or so. Haven't been up to much except working and studying.

Anyway, was just cruising the net and found this neat little package at the following link:

Not sure if I've seen the practicality of such a design but it does push the envelope with its design. If at very least it inspires some unorthodox thinking, its probably worth it. Sure does look cool (to me anyway)

Design students are interesting people and the way they think, I worked with some a few years ago.
It would be good to know what the design brief was for the yacht and if it was at uni there might another 20 different versions out there somewhere?

Its popped up a few times on the forum and thats building a landyacht with a pedal backup, or vice versa of course. I dont think I've ever been sailing where the wind is constant and doesn't drop off periodically (and randomly [}:)]), with this in mind I've always wondered about pedal backup. Been sketching things on paper every now and then in an effort to add a lightweight pedal drive but haven't come up with a satisfactory system so far (lightweight and at minimal expense ).

Maybe I should spread the word here at uni re landyacht designs. Hopefully one day I'll hear an engineering lecturer complaining they haven't any ideas for a project

I think it could work. Pedaling lay over wheels is very inefficient tho and the tyre wear would be scary.
I suppose you need to consider just WHY you want a pedal/sail combo.
do you want a sail assisted bike to get you and your gear somewhere, or do you want a pedal assisted landyacht?
Personally I have no desire to push a landyacht around, If I cant sail , Id rather sit !
If I wanted to get somewhere with all my gear then a sail assisted bike would be the go , but that means a lightweight muti geared ,comfy bike that can carry gear and have a rig that easily reefs or packs away.
The leaves me with the problem that every recumbent Ive tried has been horrible.
Id be considering a long bike with deraileur gearing and a forward mounted mast/sail combo , with an outrigger/carry frame that can be switched from side to side depending to prevailing wind
