It's been a fair while since I've been out on my board in flatwater. I used to do it all the time. Nowadays, I think I've become a bit "conditions" obsessed, it's either surfing or downwinding. I've forgotten about the simple pleasures of just going out in flat water.

Today, the conditions were just perfect here in Melbourne, in hindsight I probably should have driven to the surf. Very light wind and sunshine. I thought instead I'd go for a cruise in the bay and trawl for some salmon.

I didn't catch anything, but the water was clear and I could see some of the buggers, but I guess they didn't like my lure.

Oh the serenity - what a wonderful day in the bay.

Oliver, it would have been nice in Western Port today also.

But year, a flat water cruise is always fun. Even when it's blowing a gale from the wrong direction, you can always go find a river, and get a little shelter, and still have a paddle.

It's a 365 consecutive days challenge ! I haven't racked up 365 consecutive. Has anyone else ?

Wato from Beach Without Sand Surf Shop (North Avalon Sydney) racked up over 400 consecutive days of surfing once. There must have been some terrible days in amongst it though!

How do you set up for trolling? Do you just use a hand line or can you manage a rod on your board?
I've tried out from the Black Rock clock tower with soft plastics, but no luck yet. It's a great way to spend your time on the water just looking for diffrent reefs and drop offs.

Hey hoagie,

When I'm trawling I use a rod which fits into a pvc rod holder attached to a milk crate on the front of my sup. I fix the milk crate with some larger pvc pipes cut to shape and use my legrope to keep it in place. It seems to work pretty well. I think you want a rod so you can control snags with the drag on the reel. It's a terrific sound when you hear that buzz go off when you hook a fish. I was really hoping to get onto some salmon. Oh well there is always next time.

Wow, this is similar to what I am rigging up right now.
I'm going to put a tie down strap through the milk crate and right around the whole board.
I am going put it on the back of the board so the rod is out of the way of the paddle.
I am also going to put a lid on the milk crate so I can sit down and do some casting for bream and flathead around snags and pontoons, and if I do tip over then all the stuff won't float away.
I'll take some pics when it's all done.

You can't see the lid so well on my pic, but it's a cutting board, which folds over the bucket. When I'm trawling I stick my rod either to the left or right of my sup. I find it stays well out of the way of my paddle stroke. Good luck with your rig flaker. I've mostly used my setup to paddle to little islands, well away from other people who will constantly say "caught any fish yet".
