OK, we're having a splicing comp.

I'm going to order some new reefing line (might have cut my other one in a mid-race tantrum)...

Im out. I just can’t bury the final bit.

The New England Ropes video posted by Gary is what I followed originally before a few others. The video posted first here is what has given me the closest to success but still not there.

I’m trying to splice 12mm double braid and it is as if I can’t get the cover loose enough to fit the fid to feed the core into the cover for the final bury. I didn’t have an egg whisk to make a Gary version D-splice but I did hack up a few wire coat hangers. Still no luck 🤷‍♂️

So sorry Jon, this comp is gonna be a two horse race at this time…

Prime spot…

Are you leasing it out of interest? To ad to Microbe’s post unless it’s changed you can buy the apparatus just not the seabed it’s anchored to. About 5-6 years ago moorings were being sold for 15-20k which was not likely very legit. Some (trusting) people sold boats and kept a level of ownership still ($1) and kept the mooring registered in their name.

People will find a way 😎

And there is this on Marketplace. Overkill for your needs but it’s available.

Moorings in both Mangles Bay and anywhere in the Swan are as rare as hens teeth considering both are mooring controlled areas.

This site often has something although nothing at the moment.

I have a 4 KvA Fisher Panda in a sound proof case. If you can hear it you are too close to begin with.

I have toyed with the idea of getting rid of it next time it causes me enough trouble and going bigger on my house batteries.

Thanks Gary, I haven’t seen that particular technique before.

It sounds like one of you guys posted a video however it doesn't appear to be a link. Likewise I can't seem to post a link here anymore either 🤔
But it sounds like you both go off a different video to the ones I have tried to follow.

Cammd, considering most videos show very similar techniques, where I get stuck is after passing the cover through the core, then passing the core through the jacket, you try and bury the core back up the standing end of the rope past the intersection of the core coming out of the cover (I hope that makes sense).

Anyway, as usual I cave up and just tied a Haylard Hitch. I might have to buy a D-Splice or at least an egg whisk.

I understand the how, I just simply can't manage to achieve a splice.

I come stuck when feeding the core back through the jacket every time. I cannot get the core more than 2 or 3 cm past where the core comes out of the jacket and that to me does not feel like it is enough. I know you can stitch/whip it but you would now be relying purely on the cotton for strength.

It doesn't matter what or where I buy the rope from and I am using Selma Fids (not cheap, but cheap fids aren't any better or worse).

What other options are there other than tying a hitch or bowline? Every couple of years when I replace the line I have the same dilemma and end up just tying something like halyard hitch.

I've never used one but I was a buddy boat for a few months with a boat that did. While I would approach an anchorage with a bit of caution and drop anchor as soon as I was happy with the depth, they would approach a bit more confidently and motored around for a bit before choosing a spot to drop anchor. As a few posters have already said, that's where it was used the most.

I wanted one then, but would rather spend the money on other boat items/maintenance now....

For the first time, I plan to sail the Kimberley region this winter.

I'll be sailing south though, since my boat is already in Darwin.

Didn't you sail up the west coast of WA? did you sail straight through to Kimberly's on your way to Darwin?
The Kimberly's are amazing and well worth the effort. King George Falls was just a trickle when I sail through there in 2017, but having worked in the region, I have seen them thundering over. Still, I was hoping for a bit more.

Sign up to the Kimberly Coast Cruising Yacht Club. I can remember what it cost but it wasn't expensive. Lots of good information and local knowledge from Ross and co..

I'm not suggesting full blown cat 1 or a RYA certification, at least a general boating license would introduce elements of safety at sea, colregs & passage planning. It might avoid a situation like the tragedy in Ballina

I agree with woke, there needs to be something more.

Anyone who spends too much time on any of the other social platforms would have to have noticed the hugely varied answers and opinion to posts and questions such as 'what does this mean' or 'who gives way'. I know some of those posts are designed to create an argument (more than discussion) and a lot of commenters are just keyboard warriors who've never progressed from playing with plastic toys in the bath tub, but there are a lot of real sailors amongst them too.

Here in WA and it's probably the same in all Aust states, you can go and get your skippers ticket on the river in a little aluminium dingy and then go skipper your 50' Riviera straight away. Its scary.

What’s an ‘old fart’? I mean what do you consider an old fart?

When I was 20 I considered 50 being old. Now that I’m 50 I consider myself still young.
I know, I’ll see myself out 😎

Sorry I didn’t elaborate on my comments before re mobile optimization, but yes I felt the fonts were far too large. It was similar to my partner’s normal phone settings where I can read her messages from the other side of the room 😜
In my opinion at least, it’s much easier on the eyes now 🤙

I don't mind the site on the PC but I find it a bit difficult when using my phone which is normally what I use to visit Seabreeze.
As others have said, tell Laurie you think his baby is ugly. He's asked for the your opinion
