The S3 has totally changed how I look at sessions too! These new pw designs have changed my outlook on the whole discipline. I now ride much more like a wing session with frequent redeploys. I just slash and burn and redeploy when the bumps flatten out and then zip back upwind to do it again.

Tend to do something like this. Head upwind until I see a good bump, collapse the para with bar clipped to the belt and fabric in hand, ride until the bumps flatten out (400m to 1.5km) then redeploy and head back upwind to repeat. Having the para in hand makes redeploys really quick if I run out of runners. Prefer this to the logistics of a car shuffle or tacking 10km upwind for a long run. The downwind run goes through a wave section usually.

7.5 vmg with the 3.1 and 720 today which surprised me.

“The only time I am ever bummed is when I look at the GPS or try to put value in my ride based on a VMG score”. But you always do it 😂😂

Of course, the wind didn't stay the same from session 1 to session 2 today but it was horrendously gusty and I went back to back LTX 3.1 and BRM S3 2.7:

Starting to think the BRM has better low end and LTX has better top end. Both sessions felt like I was using the right parawing. Also, it seems like no matter what parawing I use, when my foil size is around 700 my VMG is always low 6's.

Both sessions on Code 720s with Flex 110 tail. One Ocean 78sss v2 mast.

What tide is pushing against you for the data. Gorge is different to most locations

It’s a catch 22, more run time means more batteries and more weight attached to you. When I did a demo of the Duotone the weight on my waist was annoying but I guess you would get used to it.

I initially thought the Duotone would be great for flat water pump training but the belt bounced a bit while pumping and your legs still fatigued as quick due to the extra weight. I decided on the Foildrive Slim for that purpose.

I started on the FD Plus kit and progressed to the Gen 2 but never really enjoyed the loss of feels that you get having an aluminium box and battery jammed between the most important connection, also the weight on the board was a killer, I ended up using the slim kit which was better but this waist system is another level of performance.

I am just running a modified waist system at the moment so looking forward to some reviews.

Wow, your board is so thick, no wonder you didn’t want to add a Gen 2 Max between the mast plate and board. My board is 12mm thick in that location, gives excellent feel and probably less distance than most boards without a Foildrive fitted.

Weight is a bigger issue.

Not sure why this is in Wingfoiling Forum. FD would not annoy wingfoilers.

Great tool to have in your kit if you are not young, dumb and full of…… and can pump for Australia. Elitist argument - I am young fit and can do anything so I am better than you.

Same as emtb issue which now is settled with most new sales being emtb rather than analogue.

FD has opened up so many areas it actually might have thinned out the crowd at established breaks. If used responsibly it is amazing 😀

Seen plenty of machismo prone foilers pumping around and around surfers so not sure the pests are just electric.

Not sure the OP was having a go at FD or just celebrating learning enough from FD to be able to do it without assistance. Great for him if that was his aim.

Yeah, wind range spacing seems odd.
In my conditions (Port Phillip Bay), if I’m on a smaller para, I’m also on a smaller foil.

To be credible for me, the low end for the 2.7 should be what it takes to get up on a small foil ( in my case 570 UHA), and the low end for the 4.5 would be what it takes to get me up on something big (970). The 3.5, somewhere in between (for me, 770 or 670).

If I’m down on the ocean, there may be big bumps but light wind, so I’ll have a big para with a small foil, but never the other way around.

Actually about a month ago I was out in 30-45 knots on my spitfire 1180 ( 1180 span 1500cm2) that’is my biggest foil. We had the biggest storm we’ve had in a few years in Perth we were on the swan river though so there’s almost no fetch. Downwind only in that wind. Barely able to control my 3m pt skin long enough to get it tucked away but once I did it was a fun surfy run. The big foil was the right size for the still quite slow bumps on the river.

We get plenty of days in Perth winter where the wind is strong and gusty but not a good direction to create bigger bumps so a big foil small para is the best setup.

Anyway thats totally beside the point. It would be great if there was a standard measurement for wind ranges like they have for car mileage but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. A brands stated wind range should be taken as a rough guesstimate only.

What I’m really interested in finding out is can a double skin with the PAL to increase camber create more low end grunt than a single skin? I think there’s a chance that it could. If you take a good solid clean airfoil from the double skin, perhaps there will be very little flutter and it may stay more solid in pumping, then you increase the camber to give it as much low end grunt as possible maybe it does create more power than a single skin. A single skin is more like a parachute using more raw grunt whereas the double skin would be more like a wing creating lift.

It’s an interesting question. I guess we will know the answer for sure in the next couple of months.

There are probably better things to do on days like that. 😂😅

I wonder what the wind ranges are where it actually performs at it maximum upwind angles. I can get up on a single skin 3.6 in 12 knots but it really needs to be 15 to get good angles and then it is maxed out at 17 or 18 knots. Yesterday I rode my 2.4m in what i think was 18 to 24 and it was perfectly powered. Could I get a 2.7m PPC for 15 and up and only need a 4.3 single skin for 10 to 15 knots? It all sounds too good to be true but I will be first in line if someone confirms if it all is true.

Feck what weight are you, what board and foil do you use to get a 3.6 going in 12 knots?? I cannot get a 5m going in 12 knots 95kg, 6 x 105l board 1010 foil.

Anyone have a link to the PPC stash belt? Can’t find it on their site.

No link just info

PPC “Para Sack”
Pair the Orbit with our PPC “Para Sack” stash belt and make your parawing experience truly hands-free.
Features include:
Secure magnetic lock system to keep the wing safely stowed
Larger storage pouch for easier packing
Integrated hook attachment
Safety knife included

12 to 30+ knots for the 3.5 sounds ridiculous. But if true I am in.

could really anything match the hybrid in strong winds? I can't see a single skin really being able to match the comfort and performance of an hybrid well powered.... I just can't

Yeah I think you’re right. In a recent podcast ( up on foil) Aljaz Valic 777 designer said that there are limitations in the physics of a single skin airfoil. Coming from a kitiing background I have ridden 5m kites kite foiling in 30 knots and been totally comfortable but with a parawing a 4.2m barely holds up above 25knots. When I got a good session on the pt hybrid ( thanls sheps) that was the closest I have felt to the easy, smooth, fast upwind that I felt kite foiling.

What is the low down grunt like to get going?

sorry for hijack

Anyone got thoughts on the 5.7 pr v2? I am wondering if I should replace my 5.4 pt skin with a 5.7 pr v2 or maybe a 5.5 ltx ?? ( or just keep the PT skin coz I’m pretty happy with it)

Not sure the PR V2 is a huge update. It just fixed the issues with V1 like the lines. I went from PR V2 4.3 to Frigate 3.5 today in gusty onshore winds and really there was no noticeable difference in performance. The only reason I got them was for the collapse in powered conditions eg cross off waves and the PR V2 shines there. Still struggling with the lines they do not stow as easily as the Frigate.

Have ridden the 4.3m PR V2 twice now, gusty crappy conditions. Not much of an upgrade over my Frigates as far as performance, upwind and speed. Main win is the collapse which is way better. A bit more stable in gusts with less flapping but harder to sort out in the water and get back in the air. Ends stick in the water and the lines still tangle more than the Frigate lines. Big win is how comfortable it is in gusts rock solid no flapping. Adding up all the small wins I am very happy. 🎉
