The other thread is too old to resurrect so here we go again.

And just remember, longer pole changes balance of the boat a lot.
Longer can be heaps better tight reaching.

Is the advantage of building an over size spinnaker pole worth the penalty ?
I assume there is a sizeable advantage of a longer pole. ?

It is all relevant to the Spin girths.
So 120% of J is often used with a SHW of 180% of J provided sheeting position is well aft and not inboard.
Present boat has J of 4.59 and SPL of 5.20 with SHW of 9.24.
As for rating penalty that is a difference consideration but general view if for a conventional boat the SPL is 120% of J has not trigger IRC defaults.
As is whether you end for end or dip pole gybe and whether you use sheet and brace or even end for end to a brace sheet system.

On a completely different issue, was having a big issue with the autopilot circuit randomly losing all power and spent hours and dollars looking at the power circuits, but seems the issue was missed software updates by the previous operator.
Problem seems no more.

So you charge with the engine, how is that more efficient than a generator?

It doesn't matter how efficient your electrical system is or how big your batteries are, whatever you take out has to be replaced.

Even with a sail boat you do a lot of motor sailing on the east coast so house bank is usually close to full.
So unless you are sitting in anchorages for more than 4 days at the time you will have some engine time even if it is steaming before getting sails up.

So last weekend on a sailboat, sat around for 2 days, i think I got to 67% on the house bank (i left power to instruments on to check stuff and had heavy computer usage as was updating stuff, fridge opened regularly, anchor light was out so left deck light on all night) and from memory that was about 2.5hrs steaming to get back to over 90%. Charging set up was putting in about 35 amp into 3 battery AGM set up. (Have gas stove/oven and hot water system runs off engine)

How much do you use each day?

So removed the generator and had no solar, increased the house bank and the efficiency of fridge compressors and lights.
Generator working when removed.
HOW MUCH POWER YOU NEED EVERYONE?
No water maker, one fridge freezer and 2 freezers all 12 volt. No lithium (but high end Bosch AGM and alternators for fast charging)
You are not at home.
Never ran house bank to less than 50%.
Carried a petrol 2000w generator if we got stuck in an anchorage more than 4 days and that we used about once a year.
One tank would get us back to 100%
Sure you are sailing boat but still how much power do you actually use.
Better to focus on the other end of the equation.
New compressors are far more efficient than even ones from 5 years ago.
LED all interior lights etc etc.

This will surprise people, galley fridge freezer , in qld in summer about 100amphrs a day, Tasmania in summer about 24amphr
Good insulation is expensive but cheap.

This thing could be on my next shopping list - most of the time a slim bouyancy vest, but you can pull the rip cord if you like. So swimming is fine.

My worry about lifejackets comes from watching a few of my fellow racers with lots of guff on their bodies. I once watched a really good Laser sailor (who went on to represent Aust in Solings) have to pull out of the race after his Laser drifted downhill faster than he could swim in his bouyancy vest, spray jacket, sailing boots combo. It made a big impact on me when training offshore for the Laser worlds way back in 1986. Back then I used to sail in a southerly to Bondi and in a noreaster up to windward. Full steamer wetsuit but no bouyancy vest, no shoes and no spray jacket. And when I was practising gybing, man did I hold on tight to the mainsheet when things got shaky. Never got separated from the boat though.

Same thing has happened in sailboards. My Mistral broke its universal in a nasty westerly when I catapulted. The board pointed downwind and was going fast. I had to sprint for 20 metres before I caught up with it. Hard to balance the needs for flotation with ability to get yourself sorted.

K
Back when Lasers first came out some UCLA professor calculated that even Mark Spitz (multi swimming gold medal winner) could not catch a capsized Laser if the boom was pointing upwards and the sail still full.
Don't feel bad about yourself!

Chris
Years ago I chaired an Inquiry into a surf lifesaving fatality in competiton and in reviewing the equipment, the panel looked closely to flotation devices that pack in a bum bag. These are quite common in the USA with fisherman.
So no impediment to swimming in surf but also no help if you have a head injury.
We did not make recommemdations about them at the end of the day.
But we looked.

A quick google search just then and I see they have become much more developed as SUP paddle boards and foiling embrace them.

So with Ballina, lets look past the media spin by MRNSW and the local authorities.
Let’s look at the legal framework and the primary safety obligation. (Rescue craft are not exempt)
So for the master, look at the first limb:
Non self righting boat that can’t recover from knockdown
Low AVS of vessel (RIBS have a long righting arm to about 40 degrees that then diminishes very quickly by 60 degrees)
Low down flooding angle (only about 40 degrees)
Opening side windows not designed to survive knockdown
Then second limb:
Elderly crew
Voyage in the dark on a coastal bar where wave buoy down coast is recording over 5m wave height.
But the master proceeds.
The best evidence suggests that the rescue vessel got caught side on, lost windows and down flooded then capsized.
So all predictable given the design and construction of the vessel.

Flame away!

A few years ago, US Sailing did a report after a series of MOBs (some fatal)
Most dangerous postion on a boat?
Having a piss off the stern particularly at night by off watch crew coming on deck.
Hence boat rule, if you can't swim back to the boat , use the head.😎

Yeah got to point 4, that was enough. It would be good if we had a repository of these, maybe Laurie could do a safety section.

Been a while since you posted, have you been sailing?

Did a lot last year, so been earning frequent sailing miles for the next 10 months.
Could be a busy programme up to next Easter.
