So I'm sure there are a few other crew out there who are cutting foam in the backyard and want to share some ideas and experiences. Here are a couple of mine to get it started. 6'6 single pin and a 5'5 simmons
Does anyone know of any wooden surfboard classes or builders in Perth?
I've found a lot of info on the East Coast scene but surely there's a few around Perth. I'm really keen to learn a bit about the process or do some classes so if your hear of anything along those lines give us a shout!
After posting my first wooden board (pic 1) a few months ago I have now finished the second one I was able to reduce the boards weight to 9.5kg by using PVC foam for the internal ribs and laminated foam, cork and paulownia for the frame (rails). The tail block is still the same, australian red cedar, deck and base are paulownia. Size: 9' * 29 1/2'' * 4''
I'm thinking of building a kite specific 5'6" surfboard using "paulownia" wood. There are a few surfboard companies using this light hardwood, so I'm not completely mad. Good thing is, it's waterproof raw and doesn't need fibreglass to finish it. A coat of epoxy resin will do. The forums say it's nearly as light as foam/fibreglass boards as well.
Does anyone have any experience with this material or am I thinking too far outside the square?
