Kiteboarding on a Bright Pink Lagoon - Kea Janssen

Locals to WA have heard about the mouth of the Hutt River, just north of Geraldton, but many in Australia have not. The rest of the world, this natural wonder seems quite unbelievable.

The Hutt River opens out into a huge lagoon on the coast, separated by a narrow patch of sand from the Indian Ocean. At the bottom of the lagoon is some stuff that turns the water pinl. Carotenoid-producing algae called Dunaliella salina. For the layperson, Dunaliella salina is something you might find printed on the back of a cosmetic products packaging, and for the kiteboarders, it's the stuff that turns the water pink in these photos of Kea Janssen.

Being so close to the ocean, Hutt River picks up the usual afternoon Seabreezes which make it kitable. While you wouldn't want to kite there every day due to the extremely salty water, you can see why it would be very cool to try once or twice.
