Redbull Lighthouse to Leighton kitesurf race this Saturday!

The fifth edition of Western Australia’s Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton kicks off this Saturday, the 6th of December 2014.

Beginning at Phillip Point on Rottnest Island (off the coast of Perth, WA) the longest kitesurfing race of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere has competitors racing across the Indian Ocean and Gage Roads finishing at Leighton Beach, North Fremantle.

We'll all be looking forward to a seabreeze around the 15-20 knot mark, and so far the seabeeze forecast looks ideal for this.     Some days, the "Fremantle Doctor"  (named after the afternoon cooling breeze that brings relief to Perth's hot summer days) can blow in excess of 30 knots (60km/h) .. which would make for a race of carnage.

The course record for kiting across the 19 kilometre channel crossing is 23 minutes, 50 seconds, but Queenslander Marvin Baumeister in the 2013 race.
