Some serious advice on good foods to eat which tend to be relatively low in calorie's yet give you enough energy to participate in sport would be helpful. Have done a bit of research so have some good ideas already, but there is a wealth of knowledge here, so someone might put me onto something I haven't heard about?

Thankyou

Though there goes my windwarrior contract Wonder if they have a market for just pathetic middle-aged windsurfers who aren't terribly obese anymore

Sausage rolls, meat pies, pasties (all with sauce) followed by custard tarts, vanilla slice, lamingtons (all with cream)

Least you will still have your contact

According to Kath and Kim, boiled cabbage is the way to go! You first! Think I'd rather take the forward loop challenge in 40 knots

OK I'm a bit confused here, my high school physics says that calories = energy. So you can't have a low calorie food that gives you lots of energy. Or am I missing something?

The way they measure calories is bulls**t anyway, they just burn the food and measure how much heat it gives out... according to that method you could eat firewood and go for years!

Hmm I've just contradicted myself.

Hardie: Eat bananas. They're just what you're looking for, and let you hang that little bit further from the boom

I also thought there was a contradiction in my request hoping no-one would notice, "who are you wise man of physical science?", Bananas, yes I've seen lot's of athletes eating bannanas on those long distance/endurance events, just been so expensive lately haven't bought any, OK will give the old nana a go!, ta nebulous one

Not that I'm really qualified to discuss this - you've seen me in the flesh, so to speak (and there is plenty of that flesh)

but my understanding is that the best way to burn the fat is to increase your metabolism.
There is a guy here where I work who eats 6 or 7 meals a day, and there is not an ounce of fat on him. Apparently by eating the meals (they are not massive, but not mini snacks either) that speeds up the metabolism and burns fat.

regular exercise and all that helps also.

Who are you model of nutritional science! Yes the old metabolism slows down as you approach middle age, teststerone levels decrease, time to exercise becomes less, eating habits remain the same, food becomes a source of socialising, destressing, and the next thing you know your looking in the reflection of a mirror in a shopping centre and see this fat middle-aged slob and for a second or three you are in denial that it is actually you, that you are looking at, and then the depression sets in upon realisation that you have turned into the very thing you feared and despisied in others, then you have a major depressive episode, then you go onto anti-depressants, and then your metabolism slows down even further, and the seratonin stimulates your apetite, and you eat more and get even fatter........ phew, I feel hungry..........

I've had some problems with weight too, snacks are bad, but when I really want to lose weight I go on this regime:

  • Eat a normal breakfast and lunch
  • Replace dinner with a half-hour jog

This enabled me to lose 14 kg's in 14 weeks, you're still allowed to have a salad or cheese&crackers at night, but don't have a big steak meal with chips. The first four or five days are difficult, but then your body adapts, and you have so much more energy during the day it's scary!
I'm not recommending this for anyone, I'm just saying that it worked for me when I needed to lose weight.

your looking at it too literally, he means low GI or what ever it is that he needs to keep himself going. you do use calories but its only a small part

give pasta a go if you need energy pre endurance event, drink lots of water the days before and eat honey on white bread on the day.
if you just feel slow and lazy then its just you eat to much sh!t
"sustagen" or similar smoothy style meal add ons give you more of the stuff you need to keep your sportsman side going while you still must focus on balanced diet. you will get fat if you do this with out real exercise (kiting is NOT real exercise!) the smoothy option is also expensive ($20 + ) for 15 serves

A little bit of advice from my brother (knows his foods).

Just eat clean. No sugar, saturated fats, trans fats. They make you feel sluggish.. Drink plenty of water, have a moderate carb high protein meal before you go exercise.

Quality carbs
Cereals (check sugar content), brown rice, bananas.

Quality Protein
Fish, Lean meat, turkey, tuna, chicken.

I have a theory....

When people give up smoking, they put on weight. Therefore smoking must be a weight loss device.

Start smoking to loose weight simple.

Why I would even respond to an imbecile like you puzzles me, however on this point I must admit I agree with you whole-heartedly!

BTW Thankyou to all the sensible replies, really appreciate the good ideas, will definitely take on board!!!!!!!!!

take a leaf out of the local kiters book (you know who I mean), i.e. go on the dole and windsurf all day, every day.
That will get you fit, burn the carbs and make you happy.

Grumps we used to be mates when we shared similar girths, but now that I look like a middle-aged spunk, I think it's over between us

86.5 kgs this morning and going down, not bad from 98 kgs 2 years ago!

Those turds must have hurt

Yes it's very hard at our age, I've been on a slow lifestyle change for a couple of years, just recently accelerated based on what my GP...........

I think Windsurfing/Kiting alone are insufficient, that's why I took up another sport this year, which has kept me active when it's not windy and over winter, so increased acitivity has made a big difference, and a long slow change in my diet, abrupt changes usually lead to a sense of starvation, followed by a binge eat and no weight loss long term. If ya love ya beer, then ya hav to up the activity level........ There's been some good ideas posted already here....

More ideas please........

Different exercise options too.....

started playing squash (badly) with my eldest a few weeks ago.

That makes you sweat buckets and gets the ol' heart pumping.

(I remember an old adage "you don't play squash to get fit, you have to get fit to play squash", but that only really counts if your playing competition level) it's great fun, can be done in the evening and doesn't cost too much - all good.

Hey, I used to love playing squash, How about a game, as long as you can cope with me playing without a competitive spirit, coz I just want to play for fun, and when the body tells me to back off, I'm going to listen........ Don't want a heart attack, got too much life to live!!!

My dear PR in general your wisdom is boundless, when in desperate need I have called you about professional issues, and your advice enabled me to deal with complex issues, your respect in the community is growing and I think your intelligence is only surpassed by your comic genius..... Equal distribution of weight theory: there is only so much weight, when ever there is an amount of loss, there must be same amount of gain elsewhere

Fluck huys, I didn't realise, of course........ if the flutter of a butterflies wings can cause a quantum physical hurricane, then me shedding weight will be a catastrophic episode for the solar system, Don't worry guys, I've just booked myself into Gino's for lunch, I'll create a quantum weight gain/loss reaction Sheesh....... I wish someone would take this seriously
