Our friend Katie (not her real name, or maybe it is...) has been a bit unlucky with love over the years. She's actually reasonably attractive, and likes a drink. Which is probably a minor problem with her.... She never gets totally smashed, but often she should have aimed for 2-3 less drinks over the night.... Only a small problem, nothing serious....

Anyway, she's 39 I think, and she feels her time is running out.... She's set herself up with a house and sports car, but now wants a baby....

She's signing up for IVF, but there's nothing wrong with her, and she really only needs either artifical insemination, or just... plain old insemination !!

She's unlikely to even chase the father up.... I say "unlikely"....

Question 1 - is it legally possibile to sign a document which excuses the biological father from financial support?

Question 2 - and if so, do any of you Melbourne Breezers want a Saturday Night hook up !?

Before IVF, she's heading to Europe for part of their summer to try her luck !!
(She informs us that IVF costs $9k - probably about the same as a good European vacation!)

Sincerely,
Simondo "The Pimp" !

my wife had her first at 39, second at 40 and third at 41...

tell your friend to have at least 5-6 drinks shorten her skirt and drop her off at the local pub next state of origin game...

I agree! Purposely planning not to give a kid its 2 biological parents is, in my opinion, child abuse.

My dad (and mum) chose to have me while knowing that my dad had terminal cancer.

All i can say is f*** you. I'd prefer to be alive dude and although I never had my biological father I still had everything i needed while growing up.

I'm sure you did mate and no offence was meant. And still no offence meant, but your dad didn't choose to have terminal cancer.

A girl I knew did the same thing at around 39. Although she didn't end up going IVF - just desperate for a baby. Anyway she had one.

Unfortunately, the kid had one chromosome too many.

Probably, not what she expected.

mattyjee, dirtyharry said it well, in both his posts quoted above . Yours is clearly NOT a case referred to in my post. I'm very sorry for any offense caused.

And who is going to look after the baby? What drop it off to day care so she can work to pay the bills and then be to tired at night and the weekends to take the role of both parents or maybe go on the single mothers payments? so we ALL (taxpayers) can pay for her wants and wishes!!!!

Go get a puppy instead

Firstly... All of the above!!

Secondly, I've seen this before (in my family) as a favour the woman was Inseminated (the old fashion way) and that was to be the end of it... Until a few years later, then all of a sudden there was a claim for clild support, you can't write a contract outside of the law, and I don't know the law. But wouldn't take the risk of having the hassle, even if in the right.

She best get her sperm donation while on holidays from some unknown in an unknown bar back room or similar... Or get a puppy

When did she start getting clucky ?

If it's only recent and she's been 'selling' too high up til now, then no offense, but it's her own doing. She shouldn't try to rectify the situation by having a fatherless child.

If she has been genuine up til now, then she should continue as is and hope for the best (to happen soon).

Such is life. Just hope it's not one of those "gee, I forgot to have babies" parents.

Had to laugh this morning, heard on the radio that the latest pickup place for over 30's is the supermarket.
7pm Wednesday nights... and the "I'm available signal" is a hand of bananas in the baby seat.

But could be a sales pitch for the banana growers after the storms in Queensland.

Shoot. I'll never be able to look at bananas the same way again.

I find mating with an anonymous man for the sole purpose of getting pregnant (without telling him) is both misleading and immoral.

I for one would hate to not know if i have a child out there somewhere. I would also hate to be misled to later find out i was used for the purpose of pregnancy. Tell her to go on the Euro trip, but tell her to get pregnant through IVF rather.

$120 p/w!?! Doggie, you must only be on about $130 p/w then?

As mentioned above - dads get a raw deal in these cases. I can only be thankful that although I have to pay the equivalent...I also get it back 10-fold with the enjoyment I get from my kids, completely priceless imo.

As for Simondo's 'friend' - sounds selfish - if she has no plans to find a guy, she should try to adopt (tough though for a single), at least the poor little bugger would have 1 parent (better than none?)

Mate if I had any contact I wouldnt mind so much but the mother is a nutter.

I think its even harder for me as Im adopted and Grace is my only blood relative that I know of and the mum said when she found out she was pregnant she said that she didnt want my money but her tune changed when she lost her job. Needless to say Im not happy about the whole set up

I totally agree with your second point as well, get a dog or a cat, selfish bitch!!

I hope you are trying to convey that she is a responsible person who plans for the future and is capable of supporting a child rather than she regards a baby as the next material possession to demonstrate to society how succesful she is.

Quite interesting guys....
"Katie" is quite a reasonable person, and it wanting to bring up a child as best she can.... My wife and I kind of like her idea.... She will have a reasonable amount of support from her brother, friends, and us... We will wait and see....

Just go on a Eurotrip is a great idea.

2 out of 3 girls who've been on a Contiki Tour come back pregnant.

A child without a father, or a mother, is far more likely to grow up dysfunctional - like the prospective mother.

My ears pricked up when you said she likes a drink. Point her toward one of the FAS sites. She may start to think things through more clearly if she realises she has to stay off the piss for 10 months.

Really? There must have been one happy guy on my trip that never let on that he was seeing to 2/3 of the girls. (or possibly all of them, but only scored with 2/3!)

I think Katie has the right idea. At least for a guy there is generally more time, and if she doesn't want to miss out, she had better get started.

As for adoption, my understanding is that its next to impossible for a lot of people, and I suspect it would be completely impossible for a single person. So that's not an option.

My personal take (and not intended to offend anyone) is that the girls these days are getting more educated than they might have 50 years ago, and therefore expect a better bloke than they might have in the past. Unfortunately there aren't the same number of blokes that meet their standards.

<snip>

The trouble with this statement is that it doesn't discriminate between bad single parents and good single parents. I suspect a child brought up by a working single parent with a balanced perspective would be a well balanced person.

A child bought up by two dysfunctional parents, would almost certainly be dysfunctional themselves.

interesting post really and a real moral dilemma. I used to joke that we always practised safe sex and gave them someone else's name when out (but I didn't really mean it). My story is that once upon a time I had a child and lost contact for 14 years with her. This lead me to wonder for many years what she was like what she looked like etc etc etc. Recently I have met her and I am now a very proud dad. I think no matter what we all say there would be a little bit of any 'donor' that would want to know a child that was fathered by him. Take it from me its always better to know than not know, its like a little piece of you is missing if you dont know and that is a horrible way to live a life. I can only imagine its the same for the child involved.
