I wrote a diatribe but I digressed so I just say this.

If you can live with aids in a binary form (itunes) then by all means get Apple TV. If you have half a clue and want to be able to play whatever you want straight out of the box without fannying about like a fanboi get something else like WD-TV live (which I have).

I'll be honest though these days I hardly even bother with that. I have a galaxy S3, I can stream everything off it in HD straight to the TV, movies, music, youtube, whatever. It's the future, get on board

How many gigs would a movie take to stream of the galaxy s3 I take it that it's the same as ipad? Streaming and downloading costs a fortune . I have gone from 7 g to 12 to 15 g plan for $100 per month with Telstra and still chew that out if I start downloading movies.

Just get an unlimited plan from the likes of dodo or whatever for $49 per month or less now probably

their customer service isn't the best, and the sales guys try and ring all the time, but a pipe is a pipe. i get good speeds and uninterrupted service - just an optus reseller (from memory)

Anyone who streams over a mobile network is surely taking the piss? I have a 500gig plan with TPG, $49/mo including phone, I have a wireless router, it's not rocket science.

@tightlines: The advantage of the S3, is that it does everything a pc/mac does and it fits in your pocket...that's it really. Streams of the network via dlna, stuff from the web, of the phone itself, whatever. I have the other usual methods too, but like I said it's just so easy that it's what I usually use. I don't need to find the remote for the wdtv live etc etc, or plug in my pc...I just pull my phone out of my pocket and bam. Done. Guarantee you as phones get more and more powerful it will become the norm.

Still don't really get it, I don't have to plug anything in I just use the iPad or Macbook wirelessly from the couch, of course I could use the iPhone also but at my age with my eyesight I find the iPad/Macbook easier.
There is the flash issue with the iPad/iPhone though.

Time to watch another episode from season 5 of Breaking Bad via iPad/apple TV, such a great series.

It is all about your internet connection speed and download limits.

What you have hooked onto the end of it is hardly relevant.

NBN should be ready in 2038 so happy days.

Is '2038' the revised number (in billions of $$$)??

Yes, but you don't have an android phone. Get it!? Ha. You're such a sucker for using Apple products that do ...er, exactly the same thing.

Flash: Most sites are using HTML5 now as a result.

Breaking Bad: **** yeah!
Rumour has it that in the last scene of the last episode Walt Jnr. walks out of the police station after being interrogated. As he walks away he stops limping and throws away his crutches.

I don't mind at all paying for Quality TV shows like this at around $2 per episode.

And if you wait just a little bit longer there are rumours of the Apple TV (kinda sorta but not really) competing with Microsoft and Sony. Hint hint.

If you have an iPhone, iPad or other Macs around the house, then go with the Apple TV - it just fits into the Apple ecosystem so well. Best $120 I ever spent. No further need for a home theatre PC etc - got rid of that ages ago.

Flash doesn't present a problem if you jailbreak the Apple TV2 and run Plex or other media programme. Alternatively, use a browser such as Puffin and just stream your flash content onto the Apple TV through an iPhone or iPad. Works flawlessly.

With a bit of googling you can also easily have Netflicks, Hulu etc running and have access to thousands of films/tv shows for about $10 a month.

The Apple "lock-in" ecosystem. You can't get out!
Take for instance the Pink Floyd mix I just posted. I clicked 'Download'. That's all I did. Nothing else. 2 minutes later...
iPod > Shared > Pink Floyd > Play. Plays on Stereo.
It's made for drunk people.

I have an old astone media player, wouldn't suggest one but it does play pretty much everything.

If I was going to do it again I'd probably go With the boxxee but it requires hdmi.

If you live in the apple universe Apple TV is great, but I have an issue with their drm on video/TV shows, not to mention the Aus store is gouging.

Some one mentioned Xbox I'd stay away as you have to pay for the xbox gold pass just to use other apps that may also require subscriptions.

Currently starting/finishing converting my media do digital, it's taking a while.

While we on this subject could some one help me with ipad problem?

I would like to watch DVDs...the last DVD cost me 4gb from my 15g monthly plan with Telstra through iTunes. It also seems to only save the DVD on my laptop when I do the download it will sync to my ipad but then when I look for it to watch again it only seems available on my laptop...I wonder where I would save it?

Is it possible to transfer non itune movies from my laptop to the ipad?

??????????

yeah, it is possible transfer movie from laptop to the Ipad, just use yout iTunes,Have you been looking for an appliance for you to transfer videos/movies from iPad to computer? Don't worry about this problem. As a matter of fact, a third-party program is needed here. iStonsoft iPad/iPhone/iPod to Computer Transfer is an ideal choice for transferring videos from iPad to computer, as well as transfer music, photos and more from iPad to computer.
