I am surprised at the response, first and foremost from the principal?
The first question I'd be asking is, why should I waste my time teaching at a school that has the head undermining my motivation to seek some form of support to discipline a unruly student?
I agree with the majority here, there is definitely a shift in respectful actions towards others, but it's also not isolated to just kids either

It must be stressful trying to educate disrespectful idiotic students.
If punishments are of ill standard which I am sure they definitely are now, given this "new Society belief"
Could you change tact on this?, and if the said student is so eager to disrespect you then disrespect them back ever so subtly and show them up in front of there peers, let them punish through anti social behaviour by making it apparent how much of an idiot this kid is in front of the rest of the class.
Gain control back by being calm, cool and smart about the whole situation without losing sight of above said plan.
Dunno just an idea outside the box maybe?
