Does anyone here regularly fast, ie deliberately go without food for a period of time? I've read about fasting and listened to people who do it. There appear to be a large number of health benefits fasting. One benefit I heard about is the body well fed is in a continual building mode on the cellular level while a body without food goes into a maintenance mode.

I think I will go for a fast this weekend, try to go for Saturday without food. I'll just drink water.

Just remember that the first thing the body eats when its hungry is muscle, including your heart.

I occasionally skip or have a very light dinner.

i'm not sure where you get this from.
fat is used first. muscle breakdown is a last resort.

i think it's good to give the digestive system a break every once in a while. i've no medical or scientific basis for this, i just know i feel better after a day off the food.

Yes beer into an empty stomach........

I think evlPanda is right, muscle is eaten into for a time before fat is consumed exclusively as an energy source. Its the time the body switched from using glucose to another sugar for energy.

The way the human body deals with fasting is fascinating, as though fasting is a natural human condition which it probably is.

When I was a kid I do remember going hungry, not that my family was poor or anything like that. I might be out on the farm doing stuff and there was nothing around to eat. However I don't recall ever being really hungry for a very long time. Its probably not very healthy to have food digesting all the time.

I'll try to give it a go this weekend. Hopefully this is not one of these events I keep putting off.

I'm with evil on this one. My understanding is that it's an evolutionary thing. Fasting/starvation can trick the body into thinking 'oh **** times are lean there is nothing to eat' so it slows its metabolism and conserves energy. Fat is energy rich so it leaves processing that until last. First up it will look to the muscles for energy.

Going without food for 24 hours wouldn't do any harm to a reasonably healthy person. I have fasted a number of times. One day isn't a long time to fast but you can expect to feel pretty miserable, especially if you're not used to it. You will feel good afterwards though.
I can't be bothered looking up articles to try and prove it but I believe fasting is a good way to detox.

For weight loss it may not benefit you, like dieting the body interprets this as a famine type situation and tried to hold onto body mass after the dieting or fasting ends. You are conditioning the body for potential famines so it tries to hold onto fat or whatever resisting weight loss.
Funny how different people's bodies react to lack of food, if my wife has not eaten in a few hours she will start to get crabby and knows she has to get some food in her, myself I can do hard physical labor all day long while eating nothing, I just don't get hungry much, my father is the same way. They say the way the body reacts like this (not sure which way?) is related to the diabetes gene.

This is a very interesting documentary by Dr Micheal Mosley that goes into the process of fasting
He also developed a far easier alternative to a complete fast.
Well worth watching

Yep looked at the video and read a few articles about the 5:2 eating idea where you fast or restrict your calorie intake to around 600 on two days and then eat "normally" on the other five....I've been told that for my height and body weight I can normally consume about 2000 calories a day to have a steady-state weight level...if i want to have a slow weight reduction aim over a one year period the the 5:2 would be a good plan to run with....

A few months ago I experimented with a fast for five days.
Knowing about how the body will interpret not being fed food, it'll go into conserving mode, I did a modified fasting.

Every day I would have a no carb protein drink, mixed with water, once in the morning and once at night.
I exercised every morning to keep the muscles stimulated, hopefully preventing them being used as body food.

What I found was that after the first day I had slightly increased energy, each day got easier not eating and my energy levels increased quite a lot over the five days, my mood was great, I felt great.

The bonus was not having to do a crap every day, so liberating!

The fast was spoiled by having to attend a family birthday dinner, it's hard fasting when so much social interaction revolves around food.

The main thing I took away from it all was that if you are continually feeding your face, you're going to run rough, like a car with a carby running too rich, too much fuel is no good.

I find that eating healthy for the most part and letting the tank run dry in between meals gives your body the chance to properly process and efficiently use what you are putting into it.

I have been doing the 5:2 for the past 6months. In that time I have lost 10kg. On the 2 fasting days I still have dinner, so I find it very easy to follow. When I'm hungry I drink water. Simple.

I'm on it for a few reasons, I had high cholesterol which I reduced previously but this has helped lower it even more. The other reason I tried it was that I wasn't enjoying my weight loss regime before which meant no salted snacks or cheeses, limit the booze etc etc. The rest of my diet was pretty good but the "bonuses" were hurting my waistline. On the 5:2 I can eat within reason pretty much as I want on my 5 days and have beers for 2nights and still lose 500g a week. OR I can have an extra beer night and retain my same weight.

The other reason which is probably the biggest factor for me isn't how long I live but the quality of my life. The fasting diet has shown to have benefits in of course cardiovascular disease, diabetes but also cancer reduction and brain cell creation and repair. The studies are small and limited but are peer reviewed (search British Medical Gov files). Their findings were positive but there needs to be more studies of larger groups.

My wife tries to do it but finds the hunger pangs and dizzy spells too hard so has tried to moderate it to reduced calories over the whole day.

My brother has found the same thing and we didn't know we were each following the same regime, till afterwards.

We are meant to eat daily, thats why nature created that feeling you get in your gut telling you its time to eat. That hunger feeling is there for a reason.
Its then up to you to eat what your body needs, fruit, veg, some dairy, meat, water. etc. Not fast food deep fried poo,,,,well, not for every meal anyway.

Regular descent healthy meals is what your body wants/needs, not starvation trendy cool fasting.

We are also meant to have children at a young age of our late teens, care for them until they are old enough, and then die at the ripe old age of 30.

Sound good to you?

The studies suggest that starvation for a day or two gets the body into a mode where it fixes problems. The programs I have seen on it are interesting and actually have tests instead of guesses.

Yeah well that's similar to me, I never used to eat breakfast and lunch so I was always a late eater, it was only over time that I added the extra meals.
So if anything I'm just going back to what I used to do.

I would agree that it's not for everyone, as I said my wife has varied it and I can see how other people would never be able to even contemplate it. Also sure there's a bit of hype about it, someone always wants to maximise the $'s but the results for me and my brother (independently) are in and we're sticking to it.

So it work's for me but definitely YMMV.

Millions of years of evolution and struggle, mean you need periods of feast and famine.

If your tanks are forever topped up and you graze endlessly between meals, your maintaining the same metabolic state, continually. Not good.

Fasting can be good for you.

'Caloric reduction' is correlated to longevity and good health.

Giving yourself a hypoglycaemic episode or anorexia is bad.

I used to not eat anything Tue,Thur and Sun. Felt great... a little cold on the fast days.

The biggest problem was people... I told everyone my schedule, yet every day my wife would ask "are you eating today?". Same at work... in fact I think they scheduled stuff on my fast days just to spite me. So I could act like a weirdo non team player, or mess up my schedule.
I write about it here in refernce to curing cancer: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/General-Discussion/Heavy-Weather/The-Truth-Behind-the-Sun-and-Cancer/?page=2

I eat every day now, feel like sh!t and I have a cold/flu/cough that won't go away.

I'm going to start again... soon.
