After spending nearly three weeks in hospital and seeing lots of over 70's and 80's I can verify getting old is no laughing matter!!
Not being able to have a shower or go to the toilet by yourself is the most obvious problem.
Not being able to walk or even get in a wheelchair too.
I was questioning if there's any purpose to life at this stage. Some wil improve others clearly will not.
Got to know two 88 year olds well in there.
One I only spoke to once or twice but I got to know him well thru listening to his conversations with his sons and daughters. Ken from Leicester loved reminiscing about his life in the Navy. Despite being totally incapable of helping himself he was still in good to great spirits. He was hoping to move in to a old folks home if he recovers somewhat. He had fallen at home for the third time in the last few years.
The other 88 year old I met was staying in a room 100 metres away from my room.
I was testing my wheelchair out and said hi whilst he was listening to his radio.
He was a former top chess player in the state and and he told me he has hundreds of chess books in his garage!
His life was reading the newspaper, dinner and chatting with me for half an hour each day.
There was a 72 year old in the next bed to me who was quite short or sharp at times.
Had some serious back issues and did not enjoy his three daily rolls in bed that were needed to stop bedsores etc.
One of the nurses bite back at him a little

but it ended well.
Having patience with older people is the key.
