This is how I know it to be...you don't have to keep left unless in a over 90k zone..

"Regulation 113 (Restrictions on use of right lane) - implantation and signage.
Synopsis
In Western Australia we do not have a keep left rule on multi-laned roads as is common in other countries and we also allow overtaking on the left, a practice which is banned in some other countries. However, Regulation 113 restricts the use of the right hand lane on roads where the speed limit is 90 km/hr or greater.

Unfortunately, this is one of Western’s Australia’s better kept secrets. Paper 2 makes the point that this important Regulation is not even mentioned in the literature with which learner driver’s are presented. The relevant government authorities that deal with signage permit outdated advisory signs to remain which communicates to motorists that keeping left is courteous but optional. “Keep Left Unless Overtaking Signs” which also trigger the rule are erected in places without any further signs after major intersections on the road. In one instance the law in the Northbridge tunnel is changed by a single sign in the Darling Range 20 kilometres away.

This is interesting -

The rule restricting the use of the right hand lane is a good rule. It is sensible, reasonable and calculated to facilitate the free flow of traffic and minimisation of frustration caused by obstructive vehicles. However, the Department for Planning and Infrastructure have seen fit not to bother including the rule in the only publications available to learner drivers. The police apparently have not seen fit to enforce the rule and the Department for Main Roads has erected sensible signs in sensible places but entirely failed to ensure that motorists joining the carriageway after the signs know of the rule. The situation of one two signs at Lesmurdie governing 20 kilometres of arterial road through metropolitan Perth is just ludicrous.

I've known about this rule since I got my license in '97 and it was in the DriveSafe handbook given to leaners then and it still remains in there now...

I don't think I have done a freeway journey in Perth lately without witnessing someone enter the freeway, gravitate straight to the right lane and proceed to cruise along at 95km/h with a queue of traffic forming behind them.

That said, there also seems to be quite a few drivers who seem to think that the right lane should allow them free passage at any time and at any speed. There's definitely freeway conditions where, just do to the sheer volume of cars on the road, you just aint gonna be able to do 100 (or more). Some drivers don't seem to be able to accept this either.

I'd be quite happy for the government to do a bit of revenue raising by just having a blitz on freeway driving practices for a few weeks. Or, why not put a couple of public servants on the freeway (i.e. not fully trained police officers) with car mounted cameras to just cruise end to end all day and send out fines to those seen being twits. Combined with a bit of an advertising campaign (which the fines could fund) it might educate a few drivers out there and tidy the situation up a bit.

For me the way people drive is I feel the way people view their world.

Having got my bike license...2 years before my car license..
many years ago makes you see the road in a different light.
One false move or one lack of attention could get you killed.
I let people in..I move over and I don't pull in front of trucks
I know my roundabout rules and these days do not speed.
Oh and I back off if I see and idiot...no sense me getting mixed up in their
road would views...I would like to have a long and healthy life

Having driven thousands of kilometres on European freeways in the last few years, and having seen how traffic flow can work on freeways where everyone chooses a lane based on their relative speed, all the time, Australian freeways are massive facepalm.

The same applies to escalators. Overseas we keep left and allow the right hand side for people to walk up or down. Australia seems to have a rule that you must stand still on all escalators, it is almost rude if you want to continue walking.

On the freeway I like to do 100. Not 90 or 95. Not 110 or 120!
When the flow of traffic in the left lane is going less than 100 I will pull in to the right lane and do 100. I laugh at those who tailgate me because they want to go faster than the speed limit. Tailgating will not make me go faster and Im certainly not going to pull into the slower flowing left hand lane. If you dont like it then too bad. Coz Im not speeding for no inexperienced P plater, bogan ute driver, 4WDriving little pin dick or arrogant ford phucker

most car speed readers show few kms more... so you are really driving under the limit in the right hand lane... unless you have some gadget that tells you exact speed (like gps or something)...

speed limit of 100 on freeways in australia, is bullsh1t anyway... it's there coz many drivers are incapable of driving properly and following other road rules so they had to set it so low. Driving faster makes you concentrate more when driving... so 120 would be more reasonable imo. Go to europe and learn as GP sais. If you are stuck in right hand lane and don't want to give way to a faster driver i'll simply flash high beams at you. If it's annoying and you don't like it, then too bad... you can always move to the left.

Almost all cars over read by about 4k at 100. I've had GPS for about 20 years and all my cars have had that error. When matching pace with people on the freeway to check the GPS always reads 96 so I think that the error is consistent across all cars.

superlizard said...

No it doesn't. It might keep you amused for a little while but once you get used to it the same problems of keeping attention come back. When I was a lad I used to do heaps of very long drives and rides at very high speed. Cruising on 160. You just get used to it and have to keep going faster to maintain interest.

superlizard said...

That's brave. There's all these drivers who can't cope with 100 and all these other drivers who can't share the road and you want to make them go faster.

superlizard said...

I think the European example is a myth. On an autoroute in France you have the same problem of relative speeds. Slow drivers potter along in the right lane so you move to the middle to keep pace. Eventually you catch a slower driver. You can't go right to go past slower cars and you can't go left because there are people doing whatever speed they like. It's a matter of find a gap and go for it.

The minor roads just crawl along because you're passing through tiny villages with single lane roads.

On all the windy mountain roads you have every wannabe racer blasting past on blind corners and bikes squeezing between oncoming cars and horns going all over the place.

That's sort of reasonable, if you do it soon enough, and don't tail gate, and the other car has a gap to pull into, etc etc etc. If you do it too aggressively you're a road raging thug and should be put in prison for menacing people with a deadly weapon.

You need to qualify this statement with the current speed and the speed limit. You could argue that someone moving left to allow a speeding driver through is an accomplice to the crime of speeding, and should also be punished by law.

The technology is here. when are we going to automatically deduct speeding fines from credit cards? Telcos do it already. Try exceeding your monthly download, even wirelessly from the passenger seat of a car, what's the difference?

As I'm sure you know, the right hand lane is the slow lane in most of Europe

The drivers over there are awesome though.

yeah yeah... whatever... nothing new here... the attitude of let's fine and punish people, coz we are a police nanny country... that's what it's all about. If it was otherwise, we would see programs put in place to train people to be better drivers and respect road rules... no point in arguing with anyone who keeps raving on about importance of 100k speed limit and how few k's over is a criminal offence and dangerous and blah blah blah... people get fined for driving 4 k's over on a 3 lane wide freeways... well that's just f.kedup... luckily i'm not a sheep and know how to get around some ridiculous rules... I've been driving for almost 20 years, and never had an accident, nor did i ever endanger anyone...

As for Telcos... they are the most f-uked up bunch in this country... their inability to do their job is just ludicrous... perhaps we should also fine Telcos who don't do their job properly and make mistakes and rip customers off... and we should also fine police for having faulty cameras...

p.s. Ian, i'm not getting off at you... just speaking generally towards the attitude i've experience around...

I have a Russian boss who is a complete and utter wanker. I have been working for the company for nealry two years and my exposure has been limited to roughly six hours, fortunately He lives and works in Sydney.

35? drives a late model Audi. Loves it, am sure he gets an erection when he thinks about it.

Got to do 44.9ks with him through Newcastle a little while ago.

I'll give it to him he is a good driver, has obviously driven in Europe but the constant Aussie drivers cannot dirve got my back up.

He told me an interesting story though. This car he drives has cruise control that switches off when the computer detects that the car cannot be braked effectively. Apparently the dealers get innumerable requests to deactivate the facility so they can travel closer to the car in front

Thats right, they want to ba able to get l;soer than the manufacturers of an $85k vehicle reckon is safe
