i have a friend that owns an IT company here. its a canadian company that has branched to australia and is run out of subi. i can see if he would look into hiring you if you like. very well paid

i like perf. i love subi and freo to relax and lazy around on my days off.. kings park and AQWA (love those shark dives) & the zoo is nice. Rotto in the summer is magic and perfect for sails.

but is it me or is it really easy to catch the flu here? i have been sick with the flu and colds 5 times in the past 2 months..

oh and the drivers here are retarded !!!!

Whats the Mandurah railway line like as in frequency of trains, reliability, prices and safety?

It looks like the closest railway station is at Bull Creek. Is that a reasonably safe area? I guess buses would go to the Booragoon shopping centre.

It looks like the train goes to Rockingham from Google Earth. Rockingham looks like a great windsurfing place from Google Earth. How long does it take to get from there to the city by train?

We tried the train to Perth a few weeks ago and were very impressed with it. About 45m from Mandurah, approx half that from Rockingham I guess. Think trains run every 15m, I'm not aware of any safety or reliability problems.
Yep, there's quite a lot of action at Rockingham, not a lot of waves though.

I take the Mandurah train every day. To and from Mandurah it's every ten minutes, but since you're looking at Bull Creek they get trains every five minutes.

Trains are reliable, clean, new, the best trains I've been on out of any city in Australia.

You might not get a seat if you're getting on at Bull Creek at around 7:50 (that's when I go through there). Train from Mandurah to Esplanade takes around 55 minutes.

Looks like we will go over for two weeks at the end of August, pending holiday leave approval for me.

We will stay at a hotel in the city. My wife will have to work but it will be a holiday for me.

A couple more questions. Do they have RSL clubs or other licenced clubs in WA? We quite enjoy going to RSL clubs for a cheap meal, a few drinks, a bit of entertainment and putting a few dollars for the pokies.

Also are there many people from Asian countries over there or is it predominatly an anglo place. I've heard a lot of Poms and South Africans moved there over the years. Sydney has a fairly sizable Chinese presence. I'm not saying thats good or bad but I'd be interested to know how that compares to Perth.

the only pokies in Perth are at the Burswood Casino ... which is a good thing in my book.

the ethnic mix is pretty evenly spread IMO, which is another good thing

Yeah I'll tell them to go back to their own country. Don't like foreign girls gybing and doing tricks in Australia, making me look like a kook.

I don't think you guys have any problem with that. When I have been there a few times over the years I have been telling everyone I have met what a great place it is to windsurf. Quite a few have replied with 'it's so boring here, we want to get out'.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot of younger people that moved from Perth to Melbourne or Sydney.

On the otherhand, there are a lot of people from the UK there... I thnk they all fell off the boat at Kwinana.

The taxi's SUCK big time, if you can even get one
You WILL need your own car for anything outside of peak hours.

I agree, the taxi system is terrible!! I called for a taxi about 6-7 times. The operator hangs up without telling you if a taxi is coming, requiring you to either call back or wait aimlessly. And despite calling back and she telling me twice that a taxi is arriving…it never arrived even after 1 -2 hours of waiting. In the mean time, I tried without much success to flag down one by the side of the road. The taxis were all empty but they were refusing to stop...why? I am sure 2 young girls look harmless enough.

Finally managed to flag down a taxi after ages and the trip from Swan River to Ellenbrook cost me about 70AUD. Apart from this, and the crazy houseflies buzzing around during summer, I love Perth! I was really reluctant to leave after 9 days of absolute bliss.

As demonstated by the post above, Perth is a nice place with some good people, but its also packed to overflowing with red neck bogans. Choose where you live wisely. I think it comes from growing up in the most isolated city in the world, they dont get out much. It would probably be a good place to retire or raise kids but you'd have to make sure they wernt corupted.

Shop trading hours are probably the biggest joke, that along with the huge opposition to daylight savings. they had people ring up abc radio saying "the cows will get confused" and one of my personal favourites "my curtains will faid"

Gotta love it

You get narrow minded people everywhere. We were living in a small country town a couple of years ago where you were not a local unless your grandfather had his name on the war memorial.

Looks like we will be moving there. My wife has been offered a very generous package to relocate there. She will be over there for a month for work and I will come over for a couple of weeks at the end of August and the first week of September. We are getting a car provided so I'll have some wheels to check out the place.

I'm starting to apply for jobs there. Sent my first tonight.

Is there anywhere windsurfing gear can be rented? If its blowing I wouldn't mind going for a sail and I'd like to post some GPS results for my team.

Do they still make that beer in the red can and the bloke with a beard holding a beer on the label? Emu Bitter or something like. I love it!

2nd wind hire out gear, but it might all be in Cocos this time of year.

In summer there is hire gear available at Pelican Point, but in the off season I doubt it. If you do take your own gear you can rent a van to get around in to make it easier. Get the van instead of a car.

It will be interesting to see the conditions that you get over there in August/September. I was there in March this year and was surprised at how different the conditions were compared to December/January. I can sort of understand why a lot of the locals don't sail at all in winter.

You may as well sell your big sails now. In a year or two you will be refusing to sail unless it is better than 20 knots, and using the Safety Bay sandbars to turn around

You would think the fronts would be awesome over there. There is no land to mess up the wind like you get on the east coast, so westerly fronts would be similar to southerlies over here. Am I wrong?

I know when I was there 10 years ago I only used a 5m and 4.4m sails and a Bic Saxo 254, which was a pretty rad board for the time. However I enjoy sailing in lighter winds of around 10 to 12 knots so I will keep the bigger gear.

I guess the locals would be able to answer that better, but from my own experience they feel different. I think it might be that you get used to having a pretty good sail and anything a little bit harder makes you annoyed. I know at SB, when the direction changed only a little bit, I would get annoyed.

Nup, winter fronts can be wild, just a tad cold.
But September/October is a bit in between winter fronts and summer seabreezes. Along with April/May they're our doldrums.
