I reread the article on Seabreeze about theft from vehicles in WA. Is the problem as big as it seems from the article? It sounds like if you park your vehicle in a carpark and you go somewhere else, it will be broken into and all items inside will be stolen.
What can you do? I have a nice 4WD van which would be great in WA. I don't want to get smashed windows and stuff like that but it would be a magnet to thieves.
The article basically says there is nothing you can do to stop your vehicle from being attacked by thieves and even if they don't find anything they might wreck your car.
Just come over, have a look around, realise that you are in paradise and never go back... easy
^^ What he said.
I've been here for a bit over 2 years (total - six months in '04, away for a bit, then back to stay..), I've never had any issues with people breaking into my car. Someone tried breaking into my house once but failed. I had more issues with crime on the Sunshine Coast than here.
I also love the winter fronts, yes they can give some nice clean wind, and all the sunshine sailors and regular beachgoers stay home leaving plenty of room on the water.

No problem, "Trunk Monkeys", we breed them locally, they work a treat
I'd like to get a trunk monkey but I have a van and I don't think I'd like to share the cabin with one.
Its good to know there isn't some sort of crime wave hitting carparks over there. The article basically says your car will be broken into as there are gangs roaming the popular places to park and people always watching the carparks. Perhaps the article is a bit alarmist?

What is your wife doing while you are sailing? Oh, you are worried about the time while she is washing down your sails for you and away from the car?
Just watch all these guys from WA. They are only enticing you to come on over so that they have someone else to steal from. Make sure you display your 1995 model boards prominently so that they know not to bother :) I think your large 'NSW' sails will probably do the trick on that front.
I think like anywhere, when you are in a more remote location, the odds go up for having something pilfered. The only spots I know are Lancelin and Safety Bay, and I doubt anyone would be nicking stuff from there as there seems to be enough people about to keep others honest.
I wonder how long it will take for the Delica to rust out over there...

For someone with an avatar name of "GypsyDrifter" you seem pretty grounded.....
Honestly I don't like that born and bred attitude. I come from a place much smaller than Perth, much prettier and unfortunately much poorer. The place was economically stagnent, no industry besides tourism, a meatworks, some farming and timber. The meatworks and sawmills closed and thats when I had to leave. There was no work. Since then people from Sydney have started moving there and bringing their money and the place is better for it. Some people were not happy about it complaining about rising house prices, pressure on services etc. However the place now has better services, better housing and there are jobs there.
So you can say you don't want people from other parts of Australia to move there. However as long as individuals and companies in Perth are exporting huge amounts of resources to other places in the world, and are making huge amounts of money, then you have to face the facts that people are going to want to move there. Its hypocritical to want all of the benefits from trade such as higher incomes, good services and a prosperous future but putting down others who want to enjoy those benefits too.
If you don't like people moving to where you live, thats unfortunate. You should have been born in North Korea. You may have been born and bred in WA, but somewhere up your family tree there was someone who either decided or was forced to move to Western Australia.

Wow I knew things were looking grim, but I didn't realise it was that bad in Sydney!
There was a blog running on The West Australian newspaper website for a few months earlier this year titled 'What is Wrong With Perth?'. The prompt was a survey run by some consultants somewhere that rated Perth poorly as a destination for people to want to move to for work. It ran for almost three months and attracted over 600 comments. It provided a very interesting insight into the people and attitudes here. It seemed there were three predominant attitudes:
If you don't like it, leave. Nothing is wrong with Perth, anyone who says so should be shot.
Perth is great, but could be better. Extended trading hours, an active government (as oppose to the apparently inactive one there is now), better public transport, a whole heap of improvements could be done to make it a more pleasant place to live.
Perth is boring as bat****, I'm leaving or I've left. I might come back to die, but for an excitement filled life it's got nothing. This school of thought was occasionally accompanied by an admission that it does have something to offer for people who like beaches and getting outdoors and active, but if you'd rather not do that sort of thing then you'll be bored witless. I doubt it would apply to anyone on this forum
One thing that I've noticed about Perth is that it can be very hard for outsiders to break into social circles of local Perthites. It seems people who were born and bred here don't want to meet and make friends with outsiders who have moved here, and for the two years I've been here, there are only two Western Australians who I count as friends and catch up with regularly, everyone else is a blow-in like myself. Last night I dined with a Welshman, a Cornishman, a Londoner and a Kiwi, I was the only Australian.
Anyway I've managed to find that blog again, it's here: thewest.com.au/
Just got back and started reading responses in that blog. Thanks for posting Greenpat.
One thing I don't like about NSW is the trading hours. I really hate the shops being open on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Its unfair for the smaller shop keepers and has put many corner stores out of business. So WA still has restricted trading hours? I guess that makes it boring for those people who think a good Saturday afternoon is visiting their local mega shopping centre.
The posters mention Perth people are a bit standoffish with strangers. That doesn't happen just over there, it happens all over Australia. I found Perth people to be alright. They would give you a wave when you were driving and they were alright in social settings.
Housing is expensive. Welcome to Australia in the 21st century. Even where I grew up housing is expensive. A house I bought in 1995 for $90,000 is now worth about $250,000. My parents farm is going up in value all the time because land is being chopped up around them. If I want to buy a modest house where I live now I'll have to pay at least $550,000. People always complain about the cost of housing but nothing much will be done to reduce the cost because then everyone will complain about their house not being worth as much as before.
I'm not into clubbing or raving so I couldn't care less if there are few seedy bars with crap sound and lighting and charging $8 for a beer.
Hi, don't think I'll be out at Kalgoolie but I'm sure we will visit there and Coolgardie.
My wife likes Perth. Much cleaner and seems to be safer than Sydney. I'm going over this Saturday. I have applied for a few jobs and received a good response. One is for a much higher level position than what I do now so I'm not that confident I'd get it but I'll give it my best shot. I have a preliminary interview this Monday morning. So I'll basically have to make a decision, whether to go to Perth and seek a higher level job with more money or go for something a bit more 9 to 5 and enjoy the lifestyle there.
