Just wondering what peoples thoughts were regarding the media essentially plagiarising posts on the forum to fill in space and call for tighter restrictions? By sharing our experience could we be contributing to eventual doom through tigher restrictions and loss of personal freedom?

As an active user on motorcycle forums, I've become used to the police scanning posts for information and using it to justify heavy handed actions. If the journos are pulling stuff of these forums, how long till the wowsers start calling for new laws to "protect" us from taking personal responsibility and making our own choices on the water?

Lazy "Journalism"

Indeed.. but I guess it could've come from a fellow SUPer who got sprung at work surfing seabreeze - "Ah, yes boss... just ummm, researching for an indepth expose of those crazy guys on big boards"

but still... what does one expect from the meedya

News is regularly breaking on Face Book, My Space, Twitter etc before the "journos" get a look in.

So this probably means "journos" have become an endangered species or better still a dying breed.

Anybody who lives by the creed "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.", should have their tongues cut out and fingers chopped off.

With this story having been highjacked off the forum and the cufuffle that has happened over another marathon type journey being proposed in the land yachting section it might be wise for the moderators and forum owners to review their legal positions at this point in time.

Quote from The Age April 25

"When he finally reached the market, he struck further problems."

That's strange. I read the original article fairly carefully and I don't remember him going to the market.
Was there another episode that I missed?

Newspaper journalists are an endangered species - this article is another example of why. If you put the original post back to back with the article - I know what I'd rather be reading. Ask anyone under 25 if they would buy a newspaper.

Im not sure crisco is the same as them using face book to find mug shots of people.
I dont think there is copy wright protection on the internet.
At least they accredited there source which was SEABREESE!!!!!
Mabe the journo is a forum user or mabe someone googled it to see what the rescue was about?
im not sure who would be accountable if someone died and if the event was and pubically posted would there have to be like public liability?

There was a similar post on the kite forums i read a while back ill see if i can dig it up

SUP'ers response to the theage article here:

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=65290

This post was interesting:

If I wasn't so pissed off, I'd be laughing my arse off right now. Just a week ago, I had a chat with DJ over the dangers of being misquoted by journalists... and then they somehow manage to accredit a quote to ME in this article.

This is from the article...

Others have blamed Mr Peterson's companions for paddling off without him.

Paul Harrington from Victoria posted: ''Why on earth didn't you all stay together? Doing an open water crossing in a group for safety only works if you are a group! Your friends should have slowed down and waited for you!''

And this is from Seabreeze...

Great story and good outcome.

But one question - why on earth didn't you all stay together? Doing an open water crossing in a group for safety only works if you are a group!

YOUR FRIENDS SHOULD HAVE SLOWED DOWN AND WAITED FOR YOU!

I'd be having a few words with your friends about that.

FFS. I'm clearly not brady.

I think it must be because I replied to the quoted post, and the twit who wrote this article is either too lazy or too stupid to work out how a forum works...

In hindsight, sure. But they're hardly Robinson Crusoe there (no pun intended, with the whole castaway thing ). I know I've been in a similar situation, albeit not in the shipping lane, but the winds were about 30 knots, a storm was brewing, it was raining cats and dogs, and the group got a little separated. This was just the last 1km stretch from Green Point to Sandringham where you're effectively right on shore, but still, the group took off, leaving one behind and out of sight. It happens and I'll stick my hand up and say I'm as guilty of that as anyone.

The fact is, DJ's fellow adventurers are all stand-up guys (okay so now these unintentional puns are becoming a problem ). I would trust them implicitly. Nevertheless, if there's anything we can do in the future to improve safety, including greater focus on essential and best quality equipment, or pairing up or regrouping more often, as DJ has indicated, then this adventure has probably served to prevent a tragedy in the future.
