It's either been done with DJ's approval or it's a total ripoff of his forum post. Any clues from the enigmatic "MR Peterson?"

Thanks for the link Sparx, I wonder if DJ and or Seabreeze gave permission to run the story.

This story has just hit the air waves on RRR 102.7 program
"Radio Marinara".
Up ** creek without a paddle is becoming the the story of the day.
Sorry guys but you are not getting to much public support ,but plenty of laughs and piss taking.

If I wasn't so pissed off, I'd be laughing my arse off right now. Just a week ago, I had a chat with DJ over the dangers of being misquoted by journalists... and then they somehow manage to accredit a quote to ME in this article.

This is from the article...

Others have blamed Mr Peterson's companions for paddling off without him.

Paul Harrington from Victoria posted: ''Why on earth didn't you all stay together? Doing an open water crossing in a group for safety only works if you are a group! Your friends should have slowed down and waited for you!''

And this is from Seabreeze...

Great story and good outcome.

But one question - why on earth didn't you all stay together? Doing an open water crossing in a group for safety only works if you are a group!

YOUR FRIENDS SHOULD HAVE SLOWED DOWN AND WAITED FOR YOU!

I'd be having a few words with your friends about that.

FFS. I'm clearly not brady.

I think it must be because I replied to the quoted post, and the twit who wrote this article is either too lazy or too stupid to work out how a forum works...

In hindsight, sure. But they're hardly Robinson Crusoe there (no pun intended, with the whole castaway thing ). I know I've been in a similar situation, albeit not in the shipping lane, but the winds were about 30 knots, a storm was brewing, it was raining cats and dogs, and the group got a little separated. This was just the last 1km stretch from Green Point to Sandringham where you're effectively right on shore, but still, the group took off, leaving one behind and out of sight. It happens and I'll stick my hand up and say I'm as guilty of that as anyone.

The fact is, DJ's fellow adventurers are all stand-up guys (okay so now these unintentional puns are becoming a problem ). I would trust them implicitly. Nevertheless, if there's anything we can do in the future to improve safety, including greater focus on essential and best quality equipment, or pairing up or regrouping more often, as DJ has indicated, then this adventure has probably served to prevent a tragedy in the future.

Bugger!!..

I gave no permission and stressed that I wanted it kept quiet and that bringing the incident to the public eye would only do harm to the sport I love so much.

They've been hassling me the last couple of weeks and I've insisted that I would make 'no comment'.. I was hoping that after two weeks now it would be old news and they'd drop it.

The last message that I got from them said they would be still running with the story and were hoping for me to add my perspective and hoping for a picture of me with my board.. I didn't reply.

I just read it.. Bugger! bugger! bugger! .. I hope that's the end of it.

Don't worry about it DJ. The Sunday Age is a low quality trash tabloid. They have junior staff who troll through the net looking for cheap, sensationalist stories to publish for free.

If it was real news with real repercussions it would be published in the daily paper.

To add insult to injury the Radio Marinara people on RRR picked up on the story and commented on it this morning. They were a tad mocking in their comments but the real offence was that their comments showed how ignorant they were of the subject.

By the way, you notice how they got aspects of the story all wrong, such as the number of paddlers, and the suggestion that it was the police helicopter that spotted DJ after the ship went by (rather than the helicopter failing to spot DJ, then the ship crew waving to him some time later).

RRR? Well I guess the 5 people who wear black all year and live in Fitzroy who make up the audience of that station will be put off SUP forever. No loss.

The Sunday morning programs on Triple R are produced by real people who know their stuff. (ie. actual surfers and divers, actual doctors, actual scientists and actual chefs).

It is disappointing that the Marinara people sounded as ignorant as any commercial radio hack.

It was only a matter of time before there were some "official" reprocussions. You couldn't possibly think that this epic f@#k up was not going to get someones attention.

Of course the governing bodies are going to see this for what it is, and their knee-jerk reaction is going to be tougher regulations, which is very sad for the the rest of us in the sport.

I would almost bet my house that no (tougher) regulations will come from this, although
as Tux said being better equiped for paddles like this is important.

Page 12 in the Sunday Age and 2 weeks after the event it's done and dusted. I will find
out from Max Wells at Surfing Vic what was said. I know Max has had discussions in the
past with various authorities. I'm not sure.

I wouldn't worry DJ, lessons learnt.

I agree that they are sensible -if you intend to undertake long paddles, on any scale close to what occured - and then some.

However, if we are taking about paddles around the coast, out for a surf etc, then no, they are not reasonable, nor sensible. This is the discussions taking place with the the powers-that-be and I'm certainly not happy to "kit up" for an hour paddle hugging the coast.

Here's how I see it.. You can not paddle along within the shipping channel.. but it is ok to cross the shipping channel.. and that's all that we did.

I may be wrong about that but how do boats get from one side of the bay to the other without crossing the channel?

Transit Only Zone in Port Phillip Bay

A permanent Transit Only Zone in the north of Port Phillip Bay came into effect in September 2006.

No anchoring or drifting of boats is allowed within the Transit Only Zone.

The zone covers the Port Melbourne Channel south of Breakwater Pier, the waters approximately 500 metres to the west and 200 metres to the east of Port Melbourne Channel, and includes the Eastern By-Pass Channel and the western shallow draught fairway and extends approximately three miles to the south of Fawkner Beacon.

The Transit Only Zone is marked with yellow buoys.

Read the Victorian Notice to Mariners No. 128/06 giving notification of the Transit Only Zone.

Depends if SUP is considered drifting?? As a SUP cannot manouvre against tide and wind it may be considered adrift in those conditions?

You clearly have to cross the transit only zone and cannot out manouvre an on coming ship.

As far as I know pole boarders are meant to wear PFD's. Besides that how else will they be regulated? Don't you wear a PFD Flippy?

Good call Swanie, just read your post. Laurie can you delete this thread?
There is no need for it!

And if the journalist reads this here's a quote for you, "you're a tool bag!". I made it
short so you can't possible miss quote it.
