"Trail" is an americanism.
The diggers called it Kokoda Track - "track" being an australian term - until it was termed Kokoda Trail due to american influences (even during WW2). Whilst it has been called both (and not just recently) you would never have heard an aussie say "take that trail to the left" back in the 1940's so many assert that "track" is more proper

Track maybe an Australian term but its an English, French origin? word. There was a very good documentary on SBS about the origins and evolution of the English language, a must watch for those concerned about the use or other of English.

If there is one thing that really gets to me it is the use of infant talk.

When a grown man says "Sorry, my bad!" my guts shrivel up inside and my scrotum prickles. For farks sake guys, if your education was that minimal and you haven't the IQ or inclination to do anything about it have some pride and keep it to yourself, don't advertise it to the world

If there is anything that gets to me as of late it is the use of the word 'partner', especially if say 'my wife' a number of times and they still reply 'your partner'. I understand its inclusion in the vernacular, but please use it appropriately.

Wouldnt you say partner if it was a long term gf or bf? Wife/Husband if married?

I thought it was funny that Lady Gaga thought Juliar Gillard was gay because she refered to her bf as her partner, thats how ghey people in the USA refer to their partners.

@ Japie - I agree, people sound stupid when they talk like that.

What happened to early 80s good old Valspeak in the US, like gag me with a spoon, like, totally.

'was much better than the OMGs, which is the only bimbo word they kept from Moon Unit's language.
It probably had too many words in it, like 25 total.

I hate it when it creeps into our great game, that should remain proudly Aussie.

eg:
AFL commentators saying stuff like "they'll need to shut down on Luke Hodge. He is the quarter back for Hawthorn"

and
"they had 10 more shots on goal than the opposition"

-surely they have shots at goal!!

I have noticed that Aussies have adopted a couple of other worrying Americanisms . i have many people at my cafe ask for the bathroom . its a dunny ,thunderbox ,crapper or god forbid TOILET and its around the back and outside ,watchout for the lizards and the redbacks I ask them why they need a bath / surely they can have one when they get home.
Another one is that we seem to need instructors for just about everything now .I suppose its part of the 'New economy" and keeps people out of centrelink but SUP instruction for example ,surely its a case of find bit of flat water put the paddle in your hand ,stand on the boaty thing and adopt the poo stance and paddle, as you progress look for greater challenges like a 1 foot wave and wearing a floppy hat while doing it .Surely te limited risk to life and limb and others is limited and negates the need for an instructor and the associated expense.

Did you produce the long flat white? And is the lycra permanently squashed?

If it is you are short a customer so you should not make fun of it

oh dear I have just realised that many Aussies think that we have a US presidential style electoral system eg last election my own kids asked "hey dad who are you voting for Julia Gillard or Tony Abbott?" to which I replied neither guys I actually can't vote for them directly ,they looked at me blankly (well they are kids ) .On a serious note though i believe that Australia is drifting into an American style indifference and ambivalence toward politics (based largely on an ignorance on how our system works and also the systems own focas on leader vs leader politics, remmber kevin 07)
