"Whenever a government or state starts deciding what can be said or what can't then it's time to start considering whether the state is going in the direction of freedom or control." Are you saying this is happening now ...through the Finkelstein enquiry?

If the ALP takes up the recommendations of the enquiry through writing up and introducing legislation to regulate media content, then yes it will be apparent the ALP is in favour of control and against freedom.

Its all well and good when those opposing your views are controlled. However when your views are silenced then it doesn't seem such a good idea after all.

Plenty of governments have done this in the past. The National Socialists with their Enabling Act for example. If you oppose the view of the government then you better shut up for your own good.

If you measure the worth of a government by the amount of laws they enact and by the way they control society as log man seems to do then clearly the National Socialists of Germany, the Fascists of Italy and the Bolshevics of what became the USSR are really right up there as productive and effective governments.

In the end if a state has to rely on laws to silence those who disagree, that state will fail in the long run. History has shown this to be true time after time.

To even have such recommendations in this day and age where you can rent space on a server in America or Armenia for next to nothing, and say what you like out of reach of Australian authorities, really shows how stupid it is to suggest regulating the media.

^^^I tend to agree with you Moby...

I think it is an attempt to silence the anti-Labs coalition critics. Bob Brown certainly thinks that the relentless negativity toward Julia should stop. Perhaps they (The Labs Coalition) should look at why people don't like them, why Julia's so unpopular - admittedly her popularity is improving - but look at the competition...

The suggestions of the mining magnates having a stronger voice/voice that is too strong is ridiculous. News is readily accessible from so many sources, the big stories of the day are all published, and it is up to the news consumer to make their judgement on what has happened... OH HANG ON... I got it... The Labs work to help you do what they think is best for you... The Labs want to control how you consume and interpret your news... Would you like raspberry or chocolate sauce with that
