And it's not less dangerous than riding in a car, dying from a bee etc. What they do with those statistics is sum every person in the world that swims in the ocean divided by the number of attacks or that are killed by bees...

What you need to do is say to yourself "if I go swimming at dawn/ dusk or after dark at cactus beach, or cottesloe or fraser/stradbroke island or in a seal colony off port lincoln, are my chances still less than being killed by a bee?" NOPE

So all you Wa guys hang onto whichever statistic makes you feel better. some guy from norway who swims in a sharkless ocean a few times a year definatley does have less of a chance of being eaten than you guys on that 'one last run' out wide when you line/uni/ fin fails...

its that time of year again when whiteys come in to meet the whales migrating south with their calfs - many more around than usual this time of year. The whale migrations extend into december.

be careful out there... especially learners body dragging around.

I've been surfing windsurfing, fishing etc for 20 odd years in WA and have seen a lot of sharks, big ones, not too far off the coast. Yet you often see swimmers, 500m, 1km etc off the coast swimming around, not a care in the world.. as this guy was. I'm not sure if it's ignorance or bravado...

wasn't this guy only swimming out to the pylon.

i think if the shark is within 500m of the shore we have the right to kill it. the great white is a protected animal and now that they have learnt that they are safe in our waters they are going to stay here and not leave us alone.

my dad told me about this thing. it was where there were about 100 great whites surrounding an island off whales. then a killer whale grabbed one by the stomach and drowned it because it couldnt move. after that all of the greatwhites moved. they had a tracker on one of them and it dove down 500m and swam for hawawi

On the plus side, my local is 2km out to sea, and every year there are fewer and fewer kiters So although I'm not that keen on windsurfing with sharks, they keep the kiters away [}:)]

Hey Zed,

that spot 2kms off shore is a good break in the right conditions, kite out there myself sometimes.

Got talking with the fishing charter guys on one of the boats from the marina, reckons there's a big female GW that calls that area home.

That said I have also dived out there a fair bit and have only seen reef sharks in some of the caves.

i'll happily go swimming , the chances of the shark still hanging around is none to ****all but i thought by your post and how well informed you are you could explain to me more how you came to your conclusion that it's been hanging around for weeks .

If they have tagged it and it hangs around, get rid of it.

That's my emotion talking, but my small brain says that getting rid of it will make no difference at all, senseless, because all the other sharks wont think "o my god they killed stevo cos he swam to close to the shore" they wont know, they dont think, just swim and eat. Where there is one gone another will replace it.
Its thier enviroment not ours

There is no right answer, i will take the small risk again this year and the next.....

You can get bloody radiation detectors for iPhones today, technology is cheap why don't they take some of that money they waste on scuptures and the rest and place systems off our beaches on those bouys the council spent so much money on, surely there is some merit in the reaserch side of things as well as the peace of mind for all that use our beaches..........??????

A few months ago I saw on the ABC science programme catalyst that there is a popular holiday spot on the nsw coast that is regarded by marine biologists as a white shark congregation hotspot. They aren't sure why the white congregate there, but they do in large numbers at certain times of year. In the reported recent study over 100 different individuals were tagged and released within a 3 week period, right in the middle of holiday season. Most were tagged within 200m of the beach, popular for swimming and surfing. There have been very few atacks at this location.


Still I wouldn't go surfing there!

five divers in cockburn sound tell a pretty good story of a large white spooking them as they hudled on the bottom wondering whitch way to sswim next,theres been other reports floating around ,do nt have to be a rocke t scientest to see a pattern forming,there cant be that many out there or is there,tuffen up bruiser givenm a kiss from the radman if you say you love them so mutch even better still strap a gopro to your head i want to see your shark loving footage or shud i say foot in the mouth footage

Yeah a few people have spotted a white out there. I've had a few long swims out there including one incident when I lost my board and had to swim for a hour.. at least I had the seals for company..

There will be some record times for the Rotto-Leighton race this year.
