right on! why would you waste precious resources doing that when you could be booking old ladies for being 5 km's over the speed limit, or assisting cocaine transfers through sydney airport

Hey Ian my sympathies, had the same happen to me at Australind, I actually watched the guy break into my car and stroll off as I was pumping my kite to get in and kill the F**cker. I would have to put that down as one of the most frustrating experiences of my life!

I was recently talking to a south African friend of mine who said that over there they have a blow up commutor buddy to keep you company while traveling alone. Apparently a nasty looking bugger and very life like. I reckon dress him up in a coffin cheater leather Jacket (could be dangerous getting that though) put some heavy music on and leave the windows down and door open. Maybe have him reading a Guns and Ammo mag too? But seriously I don't think these thugs would be wanting to make eye contact so if they even think there is someone in the car they will probably steer clear.. Avoid the doll that looks like though...

Hey guys cool it! Sorry to stir up such emotion over 4WD, Multinova's, cops & crime, road safety, etc.

For the record I've amended my post - I respect the work the cops do - it's a bloody hard job that pleases few people most of the time and they are easy to blame. I did the detective bit because I understand that the cops don't have the time to do it and I believe that deterrence is only effective if there are consequences when people break the law. If I could help the cops catch him then that's what I was gonna do.

The reason I posted the thread was simply to make people aware that there has been an increased risk in the Scarbs area in the last week or so - hopefully so people will be less likely to take the same risk I did.

Big picture stuff:
  • At the end of the day it's just money, nobody died or got hurt badly. BTW I never had any money - I just owe the banks even more now :-(

  • There's a hell of a lot of people out there a lot worse off than most of us

  • If the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" keeps getting bigger then we're stuffed as a society

  • How do you help people get themselves out of a downward spiral of drugs, social outcast and crime to feed the habit? Interesting emotive show on SBS about this the other night - no answers though

WHITE FLAG FLYING - WHITE FLAG FLYING - WHITE FLAG FLYING
OK User please accept my apologies for the emotional/personalised responses. It was an unnecessary reaction born of angered frustration and personal impotence in the face of these scumbags whom we have allowed to write their own rules.
But this is just one issue. I agree if we were to meet on the beach, in pursuit of our common passion of kiting, we may well find we like each other. I sincerely hope so. I gain an extreme measure of satisfaction in liking people (and, btw, I have never found a group before where that is sooo so easy).
Your retaliatory abuses are of no concern (they say it only hurts when its true ) However there is one accusation which I unashamedly admit to being the truth the whole truth & nothing but the truth. Intolerant - yep got me there - on this one.
I too would claim to be an extremely tolerant person overall. I can & do accept anyones views on just about anything. The only people I can think of who I admit to being intolerant of are paedaphiles, rapists and ??? Oh yes those who think its OK to say of these scumbags "thats the way it is - accept it and deal with it cause its only gonna get worse".
I happen to think we live in the most carefree western society there is; those of us lucky enough to be in Perth - the best part of that best society. But it has been and can be better.
If we, as members of this society, accept that it is our responsibilty to guard ourselves against injustice; that authorities have no responsibility to check the "petty" crimes; etc etc then we are heading down a very dark path.
I have "Got Real".
After 3 break-ins followed by the outright theft of my entire vehicle I am, right now, having a lock-up steel mesh box built inside my new replacement vehicle. It will be fitted with a pin code ignition immobiliser - along with the siren alarmed impact & motion detector. I agree you have got to look after your own - I dont like it but it has come to this - already.
BUT ! If we accept this as a matter of course then thats what it will become - a spiralling downhill course. We have to yell & scream, rant & rave, send letters to everyone, express our non acceptance of these standards on forums, debates & discussions everywhere.
If we sit back, say & do nothing and are prepared to protect ourselves "cos thats the way it is" then our magical carefree lifestyle will degenerate to the level where we will all be walking the streets in daylight with guns on our hips, returning to manned fortresses before nightfall where we will be applying for permanent work visas to South Africa where we will consider it relatively safe to bring up our children.
Society MUST dictate to those who run it what the acceptable standards are. It is not a matter of cop bashing. It comes down to us refusing to accept the apparently rapidly expanding definition of whats "petty".
It may be like beating your head against a wall but at least that draws attention to the wall. If enough of us do it it may show up a few stress fractures which may then get fixed. Far better than having the whole wall ignored until it simply crumbles away to dust, unnoticed by a society busily "Keeping Real"
It is time we all GOT REAL. I am wholly behind any planned vigilante sting & thump plans anyone may have but this too is just misdirected frustration of a system we should all GET REAL about permanently redirecting.
It is after all OUR society - not theirs.
It will only get worse if we throw our hands up helplessly and say nothing can be done. By that we are guaranteeing that nothing will.

So intolerant ? absolutely (every redneck inch of me ha ha) when it comes to opinions which threaten to destroy the lifestyle I love.

Apathy is the greatest evil of all simply because it allows ALL other evil to flourish.

ahhh puppet once again i agree with absolutly everything you say
in the words of albert einstien

The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.

and a personal fav from Edmond burke

All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing.

White flag too !!
We could go on and on, but what would we gain ?
Unfortunately where I live crime is a way of life.As it is in most big cities.Maybe if the gap between haves and have nots was removed that may be better. But that sounds like Communism.
Maybe "they" should legalise Heroin. That may help. But there are many that can not accept these changes.

I am sure that if we met we would get on. Why? Because of the same reason I have windsurfing and kitesurfing friends all over the world. Most kitesurfers have qualities I repect deeply.Individuality and independence. They will go and pitt them self against the elements, using THEIR ability and bravery.
I watch riders go out half a mile and boost a huge air!
I watch them tackle huge surf.
They throw huge moves risking a kite dropping.
All this knowing that if the **** hits the fan,THEY have to get themselves out of trouble ! I have heard plenty of tales of ditched kites and mile long swims etc. but I have never heard anyone complain that the coastal patrol or the lifeguards weren't doing anything !
Golden rule No.1 of kitesurfing"Never go out further than you are prepared to swim in "
So,I am merely suggesting that we have to be as smart as the thieves. Its like gambling, never stake more than you can afford to lose.Lock anything up REALLY well that you can't afford to lose.
Don't take anything that you dont need.
Once again I have had my car robbed several times. Its a devastating experience. The worst one was at my home beach. As I said I have taken my own precautions now.Its just like kiting. You are really on your own.
I will never understand the narrow mind that says to the authourities:
"Speed cameras are a waste of money and just revenue earners, you should move them to the beach car park to stop mobile phone thieves"
Also I dont believe that petty thieves should be put into the same category as paedophiles, rapists, murderers heroin pedlars etc.

Hi User, last point from me given our views are diametrically opposed.

There is no such thing as a first time hard criminal - all the hard core boys hone their skills in the school of 'petty crime'. For you to minimise 'petty crime' is tantamount to sanctioning an apprenticeshp scheme for low lifes. Good luck with the outcomes from that type of thinking.[}:)]

AHA way to go - common ground there 'user'
Restrict the drug trade to the 'petty' drugs.
Cut the crime rate by 85% overnight
- too easy
Thats my hobby horse you are riding now - pal
But lets not go into that one here on a "kite" forum
'Send It Up' has already yelled at me once this week

Hey this is all pretty intense. Interesting though. Here from Johannesburg, world crime capital, it seems like a bit of overreaction from some of you. Now don't read that is if I'm saying I condone the crime, I just reckon Ian's right, it's only money and time lost etc. and noone got hurt.

One of the first things I thought about as a measure is something we have everywhere here, car guards. Generally unemployed "have nots" who watch over everyones cars while they are parked somewhere for a pittance, whatever you want to pay them. Of course with the state of South Africa it doesn't prevent the thefts, just reduces them to around Australian levels. So could there be a work for the dole program set up for this? Or uni students who want to earn a bit in the afternoons after classes? Might not work over there of course with the cost of living, but it's a thought.

Never heard of the commuter buddy doll, but then again I sort of fit that description anyway.

Other things you'll see in Johannesburg (almost every day):

- Razor wire and electric fences on top of 10 ft walls around almost every house.
- Whole teams of security guards with machine guns guarding an atm refill.
- Bouncers at nightclubs with machine guns.
- Paramilitary police 'flying squad' attending crime scenes in helicopters, about 5 flew over my place this weekend.
- Police vehicles with 'people-scoops' on the front.
- Signs at intersections saying 'Hijacking Hotspot'.
