Cairns is a much nicer spot than Townsville. Townsville rarely has wind. As for Pt. Douglas. We went their yesterday. It was like glass. We ended up back at Yorkeys along with another 60 or so kiters who at least manged to fly for about 3 hours. Cost of living in Cairns is cheaper than down south and it has a very good nightlife for young singles. If you have a family you can buy a house for about 25% less than normal. As for rain, we haven't had rain for 3 months. Just the same old blue skies, moderate breezes and maximums of 25 to 28 degrees. I have lived here for 25 years after leaving a southern city. You can't beat the warm winters. After travelling around Australia looking for a place to live this town has plenty to offer over those populated, overpriced and cooler southern areas. For stingers just wear long pants unless you enjoy wearing lycra.
Not a good year so far, crap really. I don't think the stinger situation is as bad as everyone makes out, if you wear a stinger suit you should be OK. Not every sting is fatal! Don't knock the muddy water, wish it was only mud though........
Hi Miss Jessie The Kiting in Cairns is great in winter due to the trade winds, And Kiting needs wind! Yorkies is good and is the closest kitable spot near Cairns in a SE wind (the predominate wind in NQ) Port Douglas is a great spot to kite But due to the Great Barrier reef there is NO Waves!. There are a lot of options but a boat is the main ingredient ........ there is a a sand cay that is 17 miles from Cairns that is epic and then there is Lizard island (my favorite) A bit of a trip from cairns but worth it as the wind just blows and blows!. Im currently running the Parrasailing Buisness in Port Douglas .... Drop in for a non Biased opinion of Kiting NQ.
I lived there for a few years.. and all the locals are great.. yes the water is brown and merky.. but its also warm all year round... and it is choppy at high tide out front of the car park, but not in the creek and is alot better at low tide.. and most of the places people have suggested as alternatives are just as choppy and about 10-20deg colder...!! Heaps of work in the city.. and as the others have mentioned you can do a day trip up or down the coast for some sick spots.. or if your living in yorkeys as i did.. your on the water every single night in bordies from April/may to Nov.. and then don the stinger suit and kite with half the people all through the wet season..
Cable rocks and is great for those non wind days and through the wet season.. but dont forget every 3rd person (that i met) has a wakeboard boat and do the 60min drive to tinnaroo on the weekends...
Id move back tomorrow if i could... and i have glassy bays and epic surf where i am in any wind direction.. but its cold.... im so cold.... heading out tonight in 8degrees - a few for wind chill... brrrrrrr

Was terrible in Cairns today, very choppy and the wind was gusty. Port Douglas was epic! Clean winds, perfect conditions and no abuse in the rigging area
I have just arrived in Cairns about 6 weeks ago, and have been excaping the cold winter months of the southern states for 4 years now, and before that had a fair few years in the Northern hemisphere chasing the breezes! I love Cairns, sure its hot n humid in summer and no surf! a few biteys here n there...but winter here is paradise... I'm 100kg and most days on a 12m kiting yorkeys or Port douglas Today (yorkeys) on a 2012 9m Naish Park and a surfboard...had a ball...boardshorts..no wettie!
If there are windless days..i know where i would prefer to be...not Townsville....not Port Douglas (beautiful joint btw)...Loads of options for the "sporty types" in Cairns
