Calling a stranger a mate, perplexes me. 'Can i borrow your pump Mate' is also poor English and impolite. Firstly i may share a common sport but that does not mean i am your mate. Secondly, where are your manners. So unless you say 'May i borrow your pump please' I should be inclined to send your hide back to school and carry on with my day.

I can totally see your point with not saying please . . .
But the use of "mate" in this country does not insinuate that you are a friend neither does it infer that they want to be your friend.
It is a colloquialism and it is used 99% of the time in that context.
to think everyone in australia who call's you mate wants to be your friend is mildly egotistical at best
