For anyone concerned about this then I suggest you throw your support behind the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (
seashepherd.org/), they were in Antarctica last year taking it up to both the japanese catcher ships and the factory ship, and they saved a substantial number of whales from the harpoons. They will be back again this year.
For those that don't know, the japanese are planning to extend their catch from Minke whales to the larger and more endangered Humpback and Fin whales this summer - possibly the very same humpbacks that migrate along the Aussie coast each year.
Sea Shepherd have drawn a line in the sand this year at this plan to target humpbacks. The time for peaceful protesting is over - if even one humpback is taken, then Sea Shepherd plan to ram both the catcher ships and the factory ship with the concrete reinforced bow of their pursuit ship the Robert Hunter, and sink or disable them. They have used this tactic before on the driftnetters and were part of getting that industry shut down.
If you are like me, and have seen Humpbacks up close, then the thought of these jap morons shooting them up for no good reason is enough to make the blood boil. Even if you haven't seen them, the planet is under enough pressure without taking some more iconic megafauna out of the picture.
Give the Shepherd some coin, help ram a whaling ship this summer, so you can kite with a humpback whale in years to come.
