When I started kitesurfing yonks back I watched a video "Kiteboarding: How to Rip". Some people may still remember it i guess... Anyway on the video they say: "Don't go out further than your willing to swim in." I always keep to that rule, I avoid long tacks out to sea to make extra ground so then if my gear brakes I won't have too far to swim. Lano is an exception, I guess you have to go far out to make it to the break but still I avoid going far out at all costs.

Heres something scary to consider when thinking of using boats for kite/rider rescue, how to correctly approach a downed kite (as dave........mentioned).

A mate (non kiter) told me of a bunch of guys he saw in spain trying to retrieve a downed kite by boat. conditions were 25 - 30kts open surf beach, near tarifa. The kite was tumbling along lines and bar slopping around behind the kite getting twisted up yada yada, these guys came up from down wind, turned side on to the wind, to grab the kite as it rolled towards them. They pulled it on board but the wind caught it and it rolled out the other side. The bar and lines then got caught on something on the boat and the kite hot launched and swung into an almighty suicide kite loop. The boat and all its passengers and everything inside got emptied into the churning surf. Kite crashed and dragged the boat to shore 500m down the beach.

Dont know if after this story i would really want to use my boat to rescue a downed kite, specially not in 30 knots and churning surf.

Then again i'm not a crazy spanish dude

Yep.. To use a boat to rescue a kite is a full skill. Ive practiced it a couple of times and you need everyone to know what they are doing. Hand signals, line procedure etc has to be fully sussed. Imagine wrapping 120m worth of lines around your prop, stuffing the engine and being blown on to your favourite (......)

Actually it does work. We regularly used to take our mobiles with us for downwinders in an aquapac.

The trouble with posting this type of "warning" is that you get guys like havox reading it as something new & different they just cant wait to try for themselves.

Hey mate, just saw your post for the first time. Whew. Pretty scary stuff. Good to hear you made it back OK.

For those of you who don't know Ian, he's probably the single fittest kitesurfer you'll ever meet in your life and he's been kitesurfing longer than anyone in Australia. If this can happen to him it can happen to anyone.

As one of the posts mentions below, a mobile phone in a Paqua case or similar is a good idea. I always just put mine in one of those minature Paqua cases and just stuff it down the front of my wetsuit between my massive pec muscles ;-) whenever we do a downwinder, just in case. After a few minutes you don't even know it's there. Haven't had to use it yet, but ya never know.

It just shows no matter how fit or experienced you are, when you head out in dodgy conditions and the sh!t hits the fan it hits it HARD!!!

ahh the memories of being dragged out to sea with the tide and thinking your gonna die. thankfully the jet skiers saved me... well worth 2 cartons of beam.
my mistakes were:
misjudged wind strength in relation to the ground and water level.
and the one lesson i had to learn the hard way. wind up the lines before swimming to the kite. very hard to swim to shore when your legs are tangled.

still not keen on the ocean after 2 yrs

Good to hear that you are ok Ian. As other guys have said if you were in the sh** most of the rest of us would be long gone.

Someone else down at Scarborough was learning some lessons on what not to do a short while ago and he had channel 7 filming him. I'm hoping they stopped filming just before he attempted to land his kite in the dunes

It's that time of year that accidents tend to happen.

Safe kiting,

Ian

ooooooh that cat's freakin' me out.
I stick my phone in a couple of zip lock sandwhich bags and poke it in the back of my harness, But you're relying on signal strength which you may loose if you're too far off shore in a remote location.
We're all responsible for our own safety. Choose your days better, live to fight another day.
Basically ,summer's getting closer it wouldn't have killed you to have missed this session - like this session almost did!
I think many of us have learnt that you can't even rely on other kiters when it hits the fan, - people often think that you'll be ok or somebody else will help.

I have a lot of respect for a guy who teaches kiteboarding and has the ballz to put his hand up to making a mistake he teaches his students not to! Good onya brother and thanx for reminding me I'm human and also make mistakes . . . . . all too often
