Insightful post carbine, if you don't want in thats fine with me. It's a fun social event more than anything. Quite often I just ride with the same old crew at the same old spot, it would be good to mix it up. Why not have a fun competition where everyone can participate and ride? The person who wins will obviously feel stoked but it's not about pumping up our own tires having a billion comps to all the time.

Also the events WAKSA organise are great but not only does the wind not always show up but often they involve sitting around on the beach all day waiting for a heat rather than riding. This is a slightly different format more targeted towards the fun side of things rather than a billion heats, tents, cars, seats and stuff to organise with a strict judging criteria.

only reason i suggested divisions was so it wouldnt be too crowded on the water and the winners arent just picked by a couple people who would only know 1/3 of the people there.

my suggestion would only see people off the water for 40 min + finals and finals should only be 20 min and entertaining anyway.

only reason i said anything was because most people wouldnt see other people kiting unless they are doing impressive stuff, distracting from the anyone can have a go theme.

You got a point I supose, it really depends on how many turn up. But I'm definately leaning your way, spilitting it into 10 man, 30 minute intial heats or something.

this is gona b sick, i agree with kitecrazy with the voting choice being about how good the rider is for how long they have been kiting and for the effort they put in and how hard they are pushing themselves. (gives people like me a better chance ) yeah a trial run in winter would be a great idea so that there would be some idea of how it will run down in summer, but for the summer one we should definitly go to all the spots, surf, chop, flatwater, kickers and sliders etc. just so people competing has a chance to try new styles they havent done before.
kiting in just flat water limits the creativity of the event

The KiteBoy Classic!!

Count me in,

Just to let you know, I'm planning (on behalf of WAKSA) to run a freestyle comp at the Safety Bay Pond early in the new summer season, same sort of idea, open format, rider judged, fun style,

You might need to follow some of Kitecrazy's idea about limiting the number of riders on the water at once. Some sort of heat sytem will be needed i reckon,

Bring it on!!

cheers

Based on feedback from a number of people I think that having everyone on the water and trying to get a fair result is not the go. So basically I have had a thought about how to restructure the general format. General consensus is that to encourage everyone to participate a good idea would be to split people up into age divisions which conveiniently roughly split up people up so they are competing with people of equal ability.

I think 3 divisions would suit best
-Junoirs (under 18- not including)
-Opens
-Masters

With women competitors entering in masters maybe?

Depending on numbers then run 20-30 minute heats with all of one division in it (hopefully 10 man heats). Competitors waiting for their heat will be asked to judge and will stay in the same area to collaborate. They will be asked to vote for their personal top 3 riders of the heat and also a 4th vote for an up and comer.

Then the top 3+1 up and comer from each division will have 10 minutes to show their stuff and a final judgment being awarded (ordering the top 3 into 1st, 2nd and 3rd). This last stage is non-essential if the wind drops out the previous heat will be used.

What are your thoughts on this format. Only problem is that when we split the divisions up so much there are so many placings and to give prizes we will need sponsors which takes further organising I will see what I can do. SOS have offered a carton of beer for the winner but it would be good to find something for the junoirs, masters and women too.

Perhaps SB and KBM might be generous enough to donate some T-shirts, subscription or somthing. Gives em some exposure for next to no out lay.

Just a thought

Excellent idea and a great spot for comp. People watching can get really close the to action. Also an ideal time to improve the relations between windsurfers and kiters. i.e. let them know and invite them along to have their own comp. Speed trials etc.

And if you are really good, get that bloke to move his yacht a couple hundred metres back.
