The KBV extravaganza is on this weekend at St Kilda.

This will be a cruisy comp with no heats and aimed at fun for all standards of riders.

The downwind race kicks off at 4pm sharp (wind permitting...) at Hampton and the race goes to St Kilda. The briefing will be held on the hill at Hampton at 3:30pm. Dont miss the briefing or you might head for the wrong beach as Chris and Ivan did last year!

After the race we have a Big Air Comp inside the pier at St Kilda.

Sunday arvo the action starts again inside the pier at St Kilda as soon as its windy enough! We are aiming for a 3pm start and will have Big Wheel down there with the bar providing some refreshments (gold coin donation required). The categories are for best trick and Freeride expression session. Prizes will be awarded to the standout Mens, Ladies and Junior riders over the afternoon. The judges will be both on and off the water and you wont know who they are! Make sure you are there over the weekend.

If the wind doesnt kick on Sat we may push the race back to start on Sunday arvo. Check the kbv website further info (maybe?) http://www.kbv.org.au

What sort of standard usually goes along in the down winder?

Pretty keen to give it a go, not trying to win of course but don't particularly want to come in an hour behind the rest of the pack through the middle of the big air comp either!

If the green arrows stay as they are on the graph, should be a good arvo. Is the Downwinder open to all, or just KBV( ASKA ) members?

Don't worry DPH, I'm no speed Demon and will be chilling out at the rear of the pack.

Not much chance of the arrows maintaining a consistant form - they get your hopes up for a good weekend and then change Friday night :(

I guess seeing as we have BOM suggesting 20 knots Saturday there is more of a chance :)

Snowman - thank you for copying this in here - good info. to know.

DPH, not sure what speed the ‘racers’ will be going at but I recon that it is worth going along and giving it a go. The way I see it is that it is open to all so as long as you are competent, can relaunch and self rescue you should be fine.

We have done a few social downwinders from Brighton which is a little closer but we usually take about an hour when we are playing around, going in and out of the bays and jumping etc. I think half an hour would be the max time if you were going downwind… that’s my guess it is only about 12km.

Saturday
Southwesterly wind 10 to 15 knots tending more southerly during the day and
reaching 20 knots at times in the afternoon and early evening. Waves around half
a metre, rising to around 1 metre.

Just a quick question, where's this 'hill' in Hampton? is that the one at the end of Sounth road or where Hampton St and Beach Road meet?
Thanks!

BoDiddly - would love to tell you and would love to know myself. Maybe a local can answer. If not give Ivan a call at SHQ I am sure he will know as it is probably right outside the shop door somewhere. Doubt you could get an answer from KBV but you could try contacting them through their website.

Wind is looking good

Saturday
South to southwesterly wind averaging 20 knots. Waves around 1 metre.

Sunday
Southerly wind of 10 to 15 knots. Afternoon seabreezes of 15 to 20 knots. Waves
of half a metre rising to 1 metre in the afternoon.

I think they are talking about the hill just up from where Hampton St meets Beach Rd. Pretty well right where the Hampton surf life saving club is. I have never done a down winder but this is my local and I have seen others heading off from here before.

What do we think, is it going to maybe turn in it on.

I'm getting steady wind in the northern suburbs, any one near the coast with report.

Thank's to KBV also.

I was waiting for my prize for last place, thought did a stirling effort, taking so long

When they said it was a race, they weren't kidding. I went out wide, played around a bit, turned around and not a sole in site, speck's on the horizon.

Didn't like it in at St kilda though, aside from the fact I should have had the 13 up instead of the 11. It's like bl@@dy Burke st in those 2 main area's, didn't feel comfortable in there at all, "is that the norm"?

Just to add: I was on a tribal II, the second time the kites been out, hence lot's of experimentation and getting a feel for the kite.

What would have been the wind strengh? I would have thought 18-20 knotts, but my wind appreciation is crap. Is seebreeze accurate after the fact?.

Strewth!! I used to kite at Hampton just to avoid the crowds, never saw even half that many kites there.

Good to hear the event was a success and that people had some good clean fun.

I only managed to get to the Sunday event, however it sounds like the first day was pretty good with the wind coming in and some fast times put in for the race, and some decent airs for the big air comp.

The Sunday comp was very good, well organised and pretty impressive to see the ‘good’ guys out there laying down all sorts of moves.

Does anyone remember what the web address is for the photography company that was there taking all the photos?

Some great pix.

Had a ball on the downwinder - was probably one of the last with doppelganger - but couldnt stop playing around in all the little bays between hampton and St K.

Has anyone seen the results from the various events posted anywhere?

"The beauty of the walk(in this case, ride) is lost, when consumed by it's destination".

Although, it was a race.
