I'd suggest that just going out in winter is super dangerous for the inexperienced.
Not inexperienced at kiting, but inexperienced at
weather.
The winter weather behaves radically different to summer. Summer, the simply seabreeze kicks in, and the wind speed/direction seldom deviates much. In winter, the wind is caused by many different things, which results in weather that is "squally", "gusty", and "swings". Not like a "consistent sou-wester".
My 2c for safety in winter conditions -
* Always check the BOM written forecast where they will describe the nature of the wind .. e.g. Squally etc.
* Learn to read a synoptic chart (see
www.seabreeze.com.au/info/wind.asp and read about cold fronts) - then you can see
why the wind is going to be a certain strength/direction, and you can learn what is "good" winter wind, and what "poxy" winter wind, when it will swing ... is it caused by a weak or strong cold front .. is it a gradient wind .. is it a well formed low cell .. you can then use the barometer/wind direction and the synoptic chart to know what part of the front is passing through...
* If you are out, and a big black cloud is coming, come to shore. The wind picks up radically when big dark rain clouds come through.
* Stuff knows what the answer is when you haven't been out for yonks and all you can think about is getting on the water!? That takes huge willpower!
Enjoy .. Lozza
