Maybe the real issue is the 100 metre zone for kiteboarding.

If the law was within 400 metres from the shore (swimming distance, which the general consensus don't kite further than you can swim) You don't need a PDF.

Outside this zone you will need a PDF just like EPIRB Rules

Aside from the other above reasons why we shouldnt be forced to wear them , another is that that it would severly effect Australians ability to compete in the international scene.

The pros that complete on the world circuit do not wear them because they would be a hinderance to the technical moves they pull..... I dont do handle passes - but I imagine trying to do one with a PDF on would be a pain in the ass..

i think everyone should be made to wear sumo suits to protect them against dangerous abrasions whilst walking down to the local seven eleven for a slurpie

Wakeboarders complete handle passes alright with a pfd. Though saying that. In competitions, the use a comp vest. Which offers less buoyoncy. Similar to an impact vest.

There is still time to make comments on their website. For, against - I don't care. Just don't stay quiet now and then bitch about not being involved in decisions later on. Democracy! (sort of)

yer they dont exactly ride with PFD's just a impact protection vest that has just enough flotation to keep you up right if ya get KO something like that might be a good compramise for kiting if they are adament about having to wear a flotation device... might have to inform them that a kite flying above your head provides more than sufficient flotation anyway

The wakeboarding vests I've seen are not rated as PFDs. They're purely impact protection and not rated as flotation devices (even if they do give some buoyancy)
Mine even has a warning on the inside stating as such.

I've lodged my thoughts on the site, hope everyone else has.

Public opinion wins again. After all our submissions the ports Minister has finally resigned. - Goodbye Mr Tripodi, I am one voter that certainly wont miss you.
Lets hope the new Minister has a bit more commonsense. A PFD surely makes sense in some situations, but a blanket rule for all, is certainly dangerous for some, in this extreme sport.
