hang in there Dustin,we definately need your input,we must treat this whole thing with caution,we dont want to ruffle any council feather's YET,remember a lot of people check this site in stealth, eveyone must keep there comments in check at present to show that we are not, quote 'marine thrill seeking cowboy's',unquote. Well partly true,I like to refer us as 'conservative athletes appreciating the parameters of air and water' HA

I have kitesurfed Noosa and watched kiting at Noosa River Mouth. I was surprised that this has not come up sooner not due to necessarilly bad kiting, but man that river mouth gets extremely busy, and lets face it, there are responsbile kiters and then there are some cowboys whos behaviour is a risk to everyones right to kite there.

In SA we have an informal group who do not tollerate bad and dangerous kiting, it can be really hard to step out of your comfort zone and tell someone that they are kiting like an idiot and to stop, but the reality is if we don't set our own rules and look after our own spots it will take one incident and the beach is gone.

I suggest that the guys here who are responsible and are taking issues up with the council and the marine authrorities (as the council can only stop you from flying kites on the beach _ it is the marine authorities who cover the water) keep up the good work, but also it is up to all you guys to actively speak up and step up when you see bad and dangerous kiting, this includes show pony work too close to shore and swimmers.

I have copped a lot from being outspoken, but it has rubbed off on the rest of our crew and we will not tollerate anything but safe kiting at our spots.

It is not easy boys but lets face it, it is up to us, if there was only safe kiting and kiters giving way to all other beach users, there would not be a problem.

Get to it, protect your spots.

Some of my family live a Noosa and Sunshine and when I visit, I would expect to have to follow the local rules and I would kite safe as the local rules apply, its the surfing culture way.

If you want to use any ideas from our website get into it:

www.southcentralkiteboarders.com

we set this site up in order to try and create some local rules and good culture to protect the beaches.

btw I actually added the rules to www.kitebeaches.com as when I first saw the Noosa page I could not believe that noone had put up the rules and it said nothing, check it out and when you guys set the rules tell toby from kitebeaches and tweek them up so that you have them how you want them. You can direct council members to this site and to a website, AKSA etc to show that our sport is responsible.

Dave
I think you do a great job for us in the Caloundra area. Dave knows me quite well & knows what job I have at the Caloundra City Council.

Noosa kiters.... One thing that Dave did not mention & what no-one has seemed to look into is the following:

DOES NOOSA COUNCIL HAVE 'THE POWER' TO BAN KITING IN THE RIVER MOUTH!!

The reason I ask this is due to my job at CCC. My department is responsible for issuing permits for commercial use of foreshores within our shire.. We DO NOT and I repeat,,, DO NOT have any power of our local passage. Although Mayor Abbott may think he can flick his braces, twirl a biro and alter the world, Noosa Kiters should be making contact with their respective Local Laws department of Noosa Council to see where Council’s powers cease with the river mouth...

Also, after forming your club, I would keep calling the Council daily, to any possible department,, Town Planning, forward planning, waterway teams, rangers/local laws, asking to speak with officers who may be decision makers. This is called lobbying people... Dave & Mike are both great at this type of thing and have impressed the council with many facets of their abilities.

If you don’t put in the work, such as what Dave and Mike have done in the CCC area, then Noosa Council will railroad you all into thinking they can do what they want..

Start tomorrow. Ask to speak with Mayor Abbott, get his actual side of the story. Lobby him using your contacts, such as the commercial boat operators.. If you pressure your local councilor, Mayor, the pencil pushers working through the complaints, then soon enough, they will come around.

Btwn Dave, Mike myself and about 3 other kiters working for CCC, we all put in the effort everyday to ensure that our sport is not only recognized, but admired and appreciated by our local authority. Many people come to our area to watch us kite, by their ice-creams, fish n chips and spend $$$'s. Mayor Abott obviously needs to hear this from you guys also..

and remember.. until the ban is initiated.. Just Kite!!

well..as an ex noosa local, i can say we do self police and without smashing every NZ, South African and general european ****er that kites like its 1970 and they are trashed on smack we do what we can to make it safe. As the area is tight, launching and landing kites can be a hazard and we did our best to educate those that tried to decapitate children and launch them sleeves in to the rock wall, but some do not listen.

We tried to get a sign up with general rules and local guidlines but have been declined on a number of occations.

Look this banning has been around before i started kiting 3 years ago, it will continue, nothing as such will change the minds of the council, im sure once they find a legal way or make up a new rule that allows them to do so they will ban it. Kiting is a hazard to the boats the come in and out, and if i was a god fearing business owner that needed to use that river mouth for my business id want the kites out!

Anyway lets bring this up again in 12 months like we did 12 months ago..and 12 before that......Oh Dave im not sure if the AKSA are actually good for anything and maybe ask before accusing the locals of ignoring a situation........

Sorry to say this but, as a boatie too, I hate trying to negotiate through kiters. Most don't communicate their intentions and when the tide/current is really moving fast, it is difficult to manouvre a power boat through the area. The "power gives way to sail" rule means that boaties have to wait until there is clear passage and most boaties do not have any idea what control that (most)kiters have!

We just need to have common sense and good manners. (boaties and kiters). Agro can be avoided with a wave and a smile.

I hope Ran is right and this all blows over soon.

Ok I can see I am fighting a losing battle with the boaties even though when in my boat its no problem with the kiter's,I agree that most fisho's could have problems, being non kiter's.

I have spoken to Tony from Noosa Blue water charters who runs 3 boats daily and has no problems with 90 % of kiter's but the other 10 % are just idiots and are giving his skippers grief by not getting out of the way quick enough, his concerns are that someone will get run over one day.
