Hi all U flying Gurus.

Thanks Flying Bat, Silvia and Rick.

I just wanted to let you all know how well you all are doing to support our buddy LAURIE. In these last three weeks Laurie, Melanie and their precious little baby now have $4000 in Laurie’s trust account. Skilled group have sent a check for a $1000 and Rick is getting a lot of support from overseas and they have sent $1200 so far. That brings us up to $6200. Prrrrrrretty gooooood U all. Slingshot has also donated a 15 mtr 05 kite and Prima Australasia a home theatre system which we will be auctioning off shortly.

There are also heaps of donations coming in. ranging from $10 to $500.

Isn’t it awesome that there are so many good caring people out there that understand and can empathize with what Laurie and his family are going through and the physical and financial battle that still lies ahead for them over the next 18 month’s. Spiritually I am so grateful for everyone’s support to Help us, Help Laurie and his family. You are all very kind and special people. THANK’S 4 helping our Ambo Kiteboarding Buddy Laurie.

Update on our buddy LAURIE.

Hi all LAURIE’S supporters.

Laurie has had the pipe removed from his throat. His throat is very course and it’s difficult for him to speak at the moment but it will get better soon. The right side of his head and body was a lot slower and weaker than the left and now it’s starting to even out.
Laurie has had several memory test’s carried out by the occupational therapist and has been passing them all. For one of them he got 10 out of 10. He is also writing notes now.
Laurie seems a lot happier and is smiling a lot. You are doing a good job mate. Get well soon.

Thanks a lot to Laurie’s Father in law Neil who has been strong and very informative during these tough times. Thanks Neil.

Well Tha Tha Tha That’s ALL folks.

Cheers ALL.
Kaos.

I hope what little I have to offer will help out.
I too have been smacked down by similar conditions down here in Tassy and got dragged 800m before ejecting 5m from the rocks.
To think that a whole bunch of guys I don't know would have helped me out,if that had gone pear shaped, is heartening.

Get better soon mate,

Sam.

LATEST UPDATE.
02/05/2006 23:00

Hi there all LAURIE’S supporters.

Sorry for the delay I have been away for a few weeks.

Laurie has been moved from The Alfred Hospital to a Rehabilitation hospital.
He has had his right foot cast removed and replaced with a sturdier one with an alloy foot piece. When his right leg is held up he can apply a bit of pressure to the leg.
He still can not move his left leg yet nor his right arm but he has started to talk again with a nice husky voice. Laurie is now eating mush or puree food at the moment.
So our man is recovering slowly but surely. Well done Laurie.

Well I’m off 4 now.

Cheers ALL.

God, I remember what that like. Laying on my back in hospital, in the same position for hours and hours, and days and days, looking at the ceiling, trying to eat jelly and mush. Its bloody painful because you can't move. It's bloody frustrating. And the food's bloody aweful.

But it sounds like your making it through Laurie. You'll appreciate your freedom all the more when you get out of bed and can move again.

You put a smile on my face Graeme. My buddy Andrew and I were just saying the same thing at the beach today. One day in the hospital is a very long day and to be traped in a hospital bed we thought it must be bloody depressing and frustrating to lie there for several months. I cant even imagine it, and you have been through it as well. Well done.

Cheers

Kaos,
mate you are a mate among mates. The support you have given is nothing but remarkable. If each of us had a mate like you the world would definitely be a better place. I have a mate at work that is like you and cares more for others than himself. People like you, are far and few between. I hope that you do get time to sit and reflect on the moment, as you are a pivotal resource right now. Keep up the good work mate

Cheers

Hey Kaos,

Thanks for keeping us all informed about Laurie and there are a lot of interested people out there by the look of the number of reads for this topic. I was just wondering if there was anything Laurie needs in the short term to cheer him up, make him more comfortable, entertain him, ....whatever.

I've never spent more than a week or so in hospital but I do recall getting really bored, ....so let us all know.

All the best to Laurie and his family.

Hi all.

It’s nice to receive those extremely warm kind words from you all. Thanks Viffer, Graeme and Zanzibar. And thank you so much for all your support.

I have been on stealth mode for a while.
But good news.
Our BUDDY is home for the weekend.
Yeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaa

From Melanie
“Laurie is home for the weekend. We have just been through all the seabreeze forum posts. It's very encouraging and uplifting for us both. There is no THANK YOU big enough to cover the gratitude we have for all the support, good thoughts, prayers, wishes and love received from everyone in the kitesurfing community. THANK YOU ALL.

An update on Laurie is:
• Able to stand on left leg (can hop using a frame down the corridor)
• Right foot still healing
• Right side moving well and building strength
• Moving himself around in the wheelchair
• Speech is improving
• He is in good spirits and positive about getting well
• All other injuries are OK
Lilly and I are going well. All the support we were shown over the last 11 weeks has really helped us get through. So a special thank you from us too.
Laurie is looking forward to seeing you all down the beach (probably next summer) for good chat. Mel.”

U did it Laurie U did it. We are going to have to strap your wheelchair to two boards and get you back out there.

Well done Buddy.
Cheers
Kaos.

Great to hear that Laurie is improving and able to spend some time at home with his family. Keep up the good work Richard (Kaos) it is heart warming to know that when the chips are down your mates will be there both on and off the water.

Having sailed at Gnotuk for over 20 years (sailboards and kites) I can tell you that it has always been the same, in that we all look out for one another both friends and strangers alike. Whether helping someone who is in trouble, advising someone they are being unsafe, or just helping. It is this type of attitude that will strengthen the profile of our sport not the macho hero crap we sometimes hear.

Bring back summer!!

Andrew.

Hi All.

Laurie is doing very well.
He can now stand up on both legs. His arms and hands are operational.
And he is very positive and eager to get his strength back and is working really hard at it.
I visited Laurie, Melanie and Lilly quite a while back and he could not stand on his right leg and could only push 10 kg with it. About 1 week later he was pushing 30kgs. I think he is going to come out of hospital looking like Arnie when he is finished His right side from head to toe is still slower and weaker than the left. He has lost his sense of perception and he has double vision. The doctors will operate on his eyes and balance things out shortly. Everything will balance out in time but Laurie, family and doctors are driving his recover super fast. He has been swimming in the pool and enjoys it as its heated and its winter in Melbourne so he said it’s like a nice soothing warm bath.

The doctors let Laurie out on the weekends now so Laurie, Melanie, Lily and Laurie’s brother came down to the beach a few weeks ago. He is well on the road to recovery and is looking real good. He can now stand on both legs and will be walking soon.
He is talking real well and is still a card. I admire Laurie’s courage and positive never quit outlook on life. He is an amazingly strong minded person.

Laurie we are all very proud of you and keep up the good work buddy.

I handed over a bank guaranteed check made out to Laurie with all your names on the bank statements about a month ago for $6200.00 and Laurie and his family were very grateful for everyone of you who helped put food on his family’s table. Laurie and Melanie have asked me to thank every one of you from all over the world very very very much for all your donations, support and kind words. THANK YOU ALL.

Laurie will be home from around the 30 of July06 and will continue therapy for approximately another 12 months. The donations have stopped coming in and I hope Laurie and his family will survive for a while on the $6200.00

So Please TRY and continue to HELP our AMBO KITEBOARDING BUDDY LAURIE. He still needs all of our help.

It’s inevitable that bad accidents happen to people but I hope that bad accidents avoid everyone of LAURIE’s good caring world wide friends that have put out a helping hand and supported him through this bad time.

Be safe all.
Cheers

LATEST UPDATE.
1/08/2006 20:58

Hey All you mad kiteboarders.

Melanie had a welcoming party for Laurie this Sunday the 30 of July. His in law parents Mr and Mrs Blythman put on a mean spread. There was plenty of first class food and drinks all round and it was a very cheerful evening. Travis, Hookworm, Tapeworm, G.I.Joe, Spaz, Kane, Michael and Veronica were there as was all of Laurie’s family. The lovely lady that helped save Laurie and cut his kite lines was there too. Thanks Victoria for helping our buddy. And a special thanks to a very kind buddy who has always been there for all of us who donated his X-Box with all the latest games to Laurie to help increase his co-ordination. Thanks Kung Fu Pete and his lovely partner Zoc.
And if I forget my lovely wife Jennifer I will be shot.

Laurie is looking stronger and healthier every time I see him. He is so cheerful and confident he even gave a standing speech to us all. I can’t even do that on my best day. Well done Laurie. Laurie can stand on both legs now and he does not have a cast on his right leg any more. He is getting around with his walker and is doing really well. His right side is getting stronger and he is as witty as ever. The dude has just got out of hospital and has done so much research on all the new kites and gear and can’t wait to get back into the sport again, it will take over 12 months but he is just full of energy. And unfortunately family survival will have to come first for them and I hope they make it.

I received a lovely card from Laurie thanking me and all of you supporters for the donations they had received and he wrote that it will help them out a lot and they really appreciate it. Thank U all.

Anyway I will catch up with you all later.

Cheers
Kaos.

Thanks Silviu.

I would especially like to thank you Laurie from Seabreeze for having placed this thread on the sticky section for the past 4 months. You have been a blessing to Laurie and his family by providing a gateway to inform and link all kiters with Laurie's unfortunate accident. I really hope it doesn't happen to any one else.

Thanks A LOT LAURIE.
YOU ARE A REAL GOOD BUDDY.
