Hey Grumplestiltskin,
MOst of the time the best wave riders in WA ride at breaks like Scarborough and Brighton. The waves we get 90% of the time would be considered junk.
The waves are very cross onshore, usually quite peaky, and have huge power even when they are small, we have a strong side shore current to contend with and massive ocean chop out the back. We frequently get a bounced back wave from the nasty shorey which collides with incoming waves and creates havoc for wave riding. We also have a beach filled with sailboards when the conditions are big or windy, not to mention all the newbies learning to ride surf.
Having said all this, it is the greatest spot to train for riding in the surf because it is so difficult and requires great skill to do it well. When you do go to a spot that has a great wave in perfect conditions, you are able to do so much more with it and hit it with confidence because anything other than Scarbs is sweet.
You will learn more in junk waves and poor conditions than you will in sweet conditions where you will only serve to p1ss off the riders who do know whats happening.
Hope this helps

Darren, that is a very good point, incredibly well made.
Couldn't agree more.
You've got a buddy of mine Sean having lessons with you next Monday (wind permitting obviously). Go easy on him.
Have also recommended you to another mate of mine who is over from Brissy for a few weeks. You can cane him hard, he's tough and can take it.
Cheers mate
