Hi,

I'm trying to find a post that appeared a couple of weeks ago regarding the setup of a 2005 11m Yarga with 5th line. Have searched and searched but to no avail.

I have a 13m + 9m 2005 Yargas and have been running the 13m as a 4 line. Seems pretty nice to me and no probs relaunching but the 9m seems to be a woof woof running as a 4 line (only had it out a couple of times). Some cranking winds coming up and i want to compare notes with this previous post.

Cheers

Getfunky, I'm the initiator of that topic, have since set up my 11m on 5 lines and it's a completely different kite. Flies as you would expect for a newish c kite. Just had the kite doctor stitch a new metal ring onto my depower strap and ran a 5th line from there ie it has no safety value other than tugging on the line by hand. Hope this helps.

2005 model yargas are five line kites, they will fly like crap on 4 lines when working hard...

Cheers fellas.

I set the 9m up that way last night and whilst I still found it to be a handfull it was a huge improvement. So much so i will give my 13m a burl that way tonight hopefully.

I probably still need to tweak it a bit though?

Do you guys run the 5th length so that whenthe depower strap is pulled right out (fully depowered) there is a "straight" tense line or so that it is still a little slack?

I couldn't get the length right last night to get tension on it but even the "wind pull" on the alsmost tense 5th seemed to flatten the kite out... Still a bit of a handfull this kite though - a bit faster than I am used to...

Also i have a Best swivel bar and wondered if you guys ran the 5th to the chicken loop (with your saftety daisy chaining off that) or straight to your safety line?

Many gratsis senors

Getfunky,

my 5th line is attached as per my 2 front lines ie on the end of the depower strap so its tension remains the same as the front lines regardless. I flew the 11m yarga with the 5th line for the first time 2 days ago and had the 5th line a little slacker than the front lines and it worked really well. I kept modifying the length a little but I don't think it's critical the the cm. The kite was very quick and obviously more powerful with the 5th line, liked it a lot. Hope this helps.

Glad to hear you had success. I am going to play around a bit with my set up. I think the 9m in 27kts was going to be a handful even if it wasn't mega choppy as well (I was almost getting altitude sickness going up over the rollers ). Still I was cruising upwind and the 5th line seemed to smooth out the response big time. Dropped it after a mega smash (backrolls + 27kts = pain ) but these yargas relaunch so sweetly i didn't have to think about 5th line.

Really wish I had an 11m though my 13m is lovely but a lot of time I am a little overpowered in the 18-23 days we get.

The correct way to set up the fifth line on those kite is to have the fifth line a little slacker than the the two front lines as if it has the same tension on it, it will pull the front/center of the kite down which in turn takes power out of the kite and even to the point in the kites top end will fold the kite in half.

It's not an exact science however an very slight but obvious bow is all that is needed in the fifth line when the power strap is at full power and the kite is over head and the bar is fully sheeted in to full power while hooked in.

Regarding your swivel bar...

If you wish to retain the swivel part of the bar and use the fifth line attached to the same pigtails as the front lines and use a saftey your going to run into big problems, it will not work !.
If you wish to change the set up of the bar, which is realy taking out the saftey system of the swivel bar then you can get it to work.

Hmm not sure I worded my post that well. Last night I clipped my safety onto the 5th line at the front line yoke, all good there. The Best website docs seem to show differant. It is hard to make out from the pics but it looks like if I continue to clip on at the same point but also run an extension from the 5th line to the chicken strap (above the bar - not the loop its self - but below the yoke/depower strap) so that only on say the last 10-15% of depower extension, tension comes onto the 5th line thus flattening out the kite... am i barking up the wrong eucalypt??

Cheers Brownee

atmospheric pressure does the work?? Dr Sumner-Miller??

Cat- glad to hear you set up a 5th and that you're enjoying your Yarga. Getfunky, not sure what you mean, but if setting the 5th line up as per design, it should be your safety line i.e. when the kite is released from the chicken loop the kite flags out to a stopper on your 5th.

Tension of the 5th -as Brownee says- with a slight bow in it when fully powered. Also ask someone to look at your kite from a distance to see if the fifth is kinking the leading edge C shape in any way, or flaring the tips. If the LE is perfectly rounded your flying an optimal trim.

Hope this is of use,
Bo
