OK,

Lets face it, you can no longer occupy every weekend in winter kiting, only go if there is a nice wind forecast on the day etc

SO

What does everyone do from April to December to fill that spare time.

Make it up to the +1 that hasnt seen you for 4 months
Garden
Surf
Mountain Bike
Rock Climb

??????

Anything sounds better than moping around the house waiting for wind

hehe just had this conversation with a friend (god i hate winter) , and we decided we needed something challenging for the brain when there was no wind.

so went and bought two RC helicopters for those no wind w/ends

cheap as chips for about 100 bucks, so we can still try to out do each other.

id still rather be kiting

i reckon last summer we got gipped with the sea breezes.
Too short for the season, gunna have to get used to those cold fronts.

During the weekends I work till 2pm and then kite after that... that ain't gonna change during winter. My 2 days off are during the week and during winter it's kiters paradise with uncrowded beaches and more whitecaps then ya can shake a baby at. Just scored myself a 12m Hydro just incase those winds get a bit frisky but the 8 will probably get the best usage.. i'll be glad to not have to hear about impending bans and complaining locals. No need to go to Fiji, Samoa etc when i've got kickass conditions just down the road here in Auckland. Sometimes i may need to head to the west coast as it'll be too windy for my local spots to handle but that comes with the territory. Nah i'm not at all grumbling about winter approaching... can't wait... the wettie is looking a bit worse for wear though.. i had better get fatter me thinks.

Hey Robbo, you & your mate sound just like me... I was so bored I went and bought a R/C car for something to build and muck around with... That lasted ooh 1 week, so I bought an other one... another week... Finally I went all out and bought one of those R/C heli's also... Jeeze there great fun but now I'm waiting for a replacment receiver...

Apart from that, when there's no wind I cruise the web working, fly a few planes to kill the weekdays & generally annoy the hell out of my wife...

Cant wait to go for a ride in your outrigger shane...

hey here's a thought, who's up for a game of paint ball or go kart racing...

There is a very good go kart track pretty much next to woodies. about where austal ships. Its a bit $$$ then the indoors but heaps better, proper long track, that they use for competitive racing.

Seems like the wind has disappeared from large parts of the continent?

Consider a trip to North Queensland! The SE trade winds have been blowing here on Magnetic Island since the start of March, with maybe one week of less than 15 knots in that whole time. Recently, we are into our 4th week of 20-25knots and the 7-day buoyweather forecast shows no end in sight.

My arms and back are aching - have been surfing or kiting nearly every afternoon for weeks, and the best bit - it will be boardshorts and rashie weather for another month yet!

We can get the SE's any time of year but they are at their best April - September.

drop me a line if you want more info on local conditions.

regarding kart racing, there's a track in oconnor that advertises it's moved in the direction of "DRIFTING"... I recon this would be great fun as it's not streight out racing, more sidways action...

regarding paintball count me in for a rebelious fight... I'll get my sniper rifal out...[}:)]

Ah yes the good old days of radio control. One of my kiting mates has a slope soarer. A glider that uses the updrafts that come off hills and thermals. You don't need much wind for them either and they're darn fast. They are 2 channel... some are 3 channel andif the birds are soarin then the gliders can soar. The windier it gets the better they fly... then again kiteboarding tends to be good when windy so we're usually off doin that.

I used to race RC cars before i got into surfing/windsurfing/kitesurfing. It was cool back then but it's nowhere near as popular now and most of the RC cars traks here in auckland have dissappeared now.

Anyway looks like another day of 25+ knots here tomorrow so i better get ready for a west coast mish... c yaz

Sounds like you've accidently moved the servo/channel switch's on the back of the controls...

channel switch view'd from rear of controls...

the "*" being where you want the switch...

1# *-
2# *-
3# -*
4# -*
5# *-
6# *-
7# *-
8# *-

match the switch to the above and see if that does the trick...

any probs drop me a line...

Can you tell me which model of heli you got , was it the SWIFT and from where and how much ? thank
I was doing a search on ebay and saw that Walkera have a number of models other than the Dangon fly. There is a new model that is around $250 and has a metal frame but if you think the standard model is good i will save some money .Thanks again

there is only so many time you can drive the RC car up and down the road before it gets boreing but these heli's sound fun.

There is a new cable park opening up! unfortunately it is in the one place they don't need it now, Cairns. I was there last weekend and the park is near the CartRacing track on West side of highway to Yorkeys knob. Everyday for the 4 days I was there was 20 to 30knots. Talked to Chris, owner of KiteRite at Yorkeys, and they have been kiting with and some without stinger suits as they are on the downside of stinger season. The one problem they did have was that the rain has still been falling when normally it should have stopped by now so the kites flys a bit heavier then normal. I will be heading back up to kite in June and weather should be set by then.

Hey Jags I know what ya mean, I've even hotted my two cars up, new bodies, bearing, lowerd them, drifting tyres & chrome street rims for styling sideways action....BUT again you can do only some many donuts...

The model I bought and the one Robbo bought I think is the Dragon Fly... Carbon fibre tubing, easly fix with cotton and super glue if your crash it and you will... I bought one of these as I always wanted one of the bigger ones but couldnt justify the big bucks only to crash it...

Forgot to mention; on the maiden flight of the $2000 + hirobo helicopter after increasing the throttle and expecting it to hover it didn't so I increaded it more and more, thinking the pitch was wrong I slightly adjusted the pitch and it took off like a rocket and then crashed. Had to dig the damn thing out of the ground.

$500 later in spares I decided to sell it and the guy who bought it distracted me and I forgot to get the money off him. Then every time I called him he pretended to be his brother claiming the brother who bought the chopper went to France.

I don't like choppers any more. Think I might get a plane PPL instead so I can pull negative G's :).

NOTHING beats 500ft negative G run.

Gents,

I've had a bit of a poke around on ebay, but some of the sellers seem to have a bad rep.
Any feedback as to who you bought from? Any difficulties?

Cheers,

So who do you fly for HungLong? Both my wife and I are Commercial Pilots; she flys helicopters and I fly fixed wing.

I am getting her back into kiting also so hoping winter will show a kind hand this year so we will be able to rip it up together next summer.

p.s Flysurfer, you don't PULL negative g, you PUSH negative g. You PULL positive g. And there are risks in PUSHING negative g in that you can burst blood vessels in your eyeballs if you exceed your tolerance and/or are unlucky. Most people find negative 'g' extremely uncomfortable and you have a lower tolerance for them than positive g. During -g you can reach a state called 'red out'.
+g has stages in the following order: grey out, black out, A-LOC (LOC = Loss Of Conciousness).
The amount of g you can handle depends on a few factors: Size and body type, physical/health state. There is a technique to help from losing conciousness and also the body becomes more tolerant with more exposure to 'g'. The length of time in the 'arc' as 'g' is an acceleration force. The longer you spend in the arc, the more likely you are to lose consciousness even though you might not upon reaching a greater g force if only for a split second or two.
Females of a short and solid build have the greatest natural tolerance for the effects of 'g'. Tall, lean guys like myself have a lower natural tolerance. Bummer, as I love aerobatics when I can afford to do them (General Aviation doesn't pay as well as I wished). I have to work harder at tensing muscles, etc in delaying the loss or gain of blood from head, etc.
Anyway... I have waffled on enough and possibly bored you to tears by now, but hopefully you have learnt something for today.
In the meantime you can experience negative g by accelarating skywards whilst hanging upside down from the bottom of your kite lines.
