Hi all i strangely got an SMS from this website, thought i would have a look at it.

http://bid4kite.com/home

Looks pretty dodgy to me, reminded me of the below website from a previous seabreeze post.

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/General/Indo-Scammers-at-it-again/

I have no idea how they got my mobile number, can only think they may have acquired it when i had a kite up here for sale recently

What do you all think of this site
DODGY??
or LEGIT???

My Vote would be for dodgy

The the fact that there's an italian language version of the site is a bit curious, unless run by italians.

Site's hosted in US for what it's worth, not Indo anyway.

Also it says
© Copyright 2014 by Bit4Kite. All Rights reserved.

at the bottom. Bid or Bit? Typo? Dodgy anyway.

Either way well done..if we keep informing each other then at least those that read the forums will have some further protection added to the alerts you can get through the buy and sell.

Interesting - looks like they are copying all of the adverts on seabreeze and posting them on their site.

They put up the right mobile phone contact details, but I wonder if they are aiming for some type of man-in-the-middle scam for online contact.

Have reported to their web host. They are very good, shut them down straight away. I guarantee this site will be down by tomorrow.

Down now

This looks to me like some dude is trying to get an auction or classifieds for kiting off the ground.
Unfortunately he is scraping content from other sites, not cool. The fact that it's poorly designed and full of typos does not help. The ads are taken from SB and other sites. The phone numbers seem to be legit. I can't see a way that he/she is scamming money or goods from anyone. It probably cost him more to run it than what he makes with advertising banners.
Don't think this is the same kind of Indo scam, or am I missing a point here?

Yes!

Our numbers /emails should be hidden , similar to gumtree but must login to see details.

Yeh I think this might help ...but can't they just then create a login...once logged in can't they just access all the details anyhow.

Looks like they are putting buyers in contact with sellers. I don't see what the scam would involve.

I don't think this is a scam.

I just think it is a poor attempt at bring an existing business model to the kiting niche.

I have come across a few of these site in other industries trying to amalgamate used for sale adds from lots of sites.

In theory I think its a valid idea.

These guys are just doing a bad job of doing it.

I can think of 2 [}:)]

1) hold cash whilst "in transit" between the buyer and seller for a short while at cash rates and pocket the interest (actually that's a key part of the PayPal and interbank funds transfer model too)

2) man in the middle on the buyer and seller online conversations (does not work of phone contacts as the real numbers were shown). Show the buyer higher prices and seller lower prices. If a deal is reached pocket the difference in addition to earning interest on the lot as per number 1

Also, looking at the site, there is no transparency as to how the business makes money or how any of it works.

Are you serious?
You guys do realise the transaction will be between the buyer and the seller.

If I call the phone number - sure.

But if to hit the "contact seller" button there is nothing to stop then getting in on the action. See this link (but instead of keys, use dollars): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-in-the-middle_attack

Actually let's test it - who has something for sale on Seabreeze that is also listed on this site?

Hey Galah and others with better skillz than me.

If you do this search
www.google.com.au/search?q=bid4kite+kiteforum&aq=f&oq=bid4kite+kiteforum&aqs=chrome.0.57j0.24519j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#safe=off&sclient=psy-ab&q=bid4kite+legit&oq=bid4kite+legit&gs_l=serp.3...20522.21053.0.21773.5.5.0.0.0.0.204.974.0j4j1.5.0...0.0...1c.1.9.psy-ab.1JkhDgHYdH0&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.45373924,d.aGc&fp=78c2367c9608c9f6&biw=1920&bih=912

ie "bid4kite legit" you can see what appears to me to be cached versions of ads on freelancer type websites, ie where they are trying to get indians to make their site for five bucks.

I don't have the leet skillz to access these actual ads or cached copies of them. But if you look at some of the text, in particular this one seems pretty sus to me. This is the creators of bid4kite talking...

"www.bid4kite.com/demo Before going online we need to fix some issues: .... Any legit bids please put the line "Not spam, I understand english" in your p.."

Now "any legit bids" sounds dodgy as hell to me. [}:)]

also

www.bid4kite.com/demo Before going online we need to fix some issues: .... work franchisee .100% Legitimate, Genuine & Scam Free Online Copy/Paste Jobs

Sounds dodgy, but I guess that's them recruiting for indians to do the copy/paste from seabreeze.

One of those is him 'lastangel' paying Sameer of Pakistan 270 Euros to fix the site, and paying another company 10 bucks US p/h to generate traffic.

The indo scam site is down and will stay down. Rumaweb the indo web host company are really good, once you complain they shut it down no questions.

The bid4kite site is another story.

On the whole I think essoeira is probably right, they are trying, p!ss poorly, to become the world ebay of kite sales, buy paying cheap 3rd world labour to steal ads from other sites.

Interesting links kiteboy, I sent the results of some googlefu to Laurie as I reckon I found a real name and email address for lastangel.

I found a windsurfing version too: <link removed, might serve malware>

It's not a scam in the way you are thinking.
Some would call it a 'temporary measure to increase legitimacy'

They skim the web for ads on other websites and they transfer them to their website. This increases traffic through their site. They then have the appearance that they are a popular and frequented site. Their money is either made through advertising (they are paid per unique visit) or through charging people to place their adverts.
