like Jared888, I taught myself and have always self-launched and landed, and haven’t had kiting banned from my locals

I say leave a small space for those who want to take on the fairly unforgiving self-learning curve. Most people aren’t going to hang in there and will give up or get lessons pretty quickly

Also, the general public need to take some responsibility for their own safety. I always gave myself plenty of distance in the early days (or wouldn’t go out if beach was crowded), yet would still have parents watching as their toddlers trundled over to play with the big pretty kite I was wrestling to the ground.

And good luck in trying to get consensus from this group about what “compulsory lessons” entails

This is just my opinion, please tell me your thoughts

It is people that think these thoughts that are stuffing up this country. You busy bodies that want to erode our freedom should get the f... out and go live in some totalitarian big brother society. You freaks are multiplying daily. Every where you turn there is you folk interfering and telling us what we can and cant do, eat, drink, say, watch, listen to, blah blah blah. It is 24/7 at work, home and now at play. It makes me so mad, if some f.. wit bureacrat was walking down some dark alley I would be tempted to (censored in case some Judas reports me as a risk for politically motivated violence)

Agreed brother! It is funny listening to people who think they can control the chaos of that is life. This to shall pass... ha ha ha

Agreed:

i can see the point of view of the non lesson kiter. The annoying thing is all kiters get lumped together. when your at a council meeting trying to keep a local beach open you can't stand up and say ohhh those incident reports you have are from the guys who didn't take lessons......we're not in the same category.....

also expecting other beach users to keep away from kiters assumes that other beach users understand the potential risks of a kite (which you get to learn during lessons), most don't therefore it comes back to the kiter to use another part of the big big ocean.

Then next we can tackle the dickhead drivers in this country(especially WA)...some people shouldn't be aloud to drive let alone fly a kite.

i think it would be nice to see this compulsary thing happen but its way to hard to police. one of the first things to consider would be a standardised teaching programme like flying a plane?? some simple steps are easily implemented

the main problem with learners is kite control, if they are made to fly a kite for a certain amount of hrs they would be more proficcient and less prone to nasty accidents.

i was lucky enough to have a mate teach me the basic's who knew his stuff and he made sure i could fly a trainer and a kite with control, made me body drag upwind before even letting me look side ways at a board (thanks jeff!!), most of the learners these days dont know how to get back to their board themselves let alone have any kite control. they seem to be just up and riding by using boat lessons and then cut free to to create chaos! (there are some instructors out there using boat lessons that are doing a good job - im not naming anyone)

after a while we all forget the hard early days and get complacent. the greater influx of learners each season is making our beaches more crowed with kiters and if we ignore it it will be a problem which could cause banning at certain spots in the future. i think this is a subject that is well worth talking about but very difficult to implement a workable programme.

take 15 minutes to talk to a beginner if you see one, it could help the restriction of kiting at your local in the long run. :)

I for one have no problem with any form of self destructive or darwin like behaviour until it impedes on others. For example, Cyclings without helmets? Go for it, if you don't think your head is important enough, don't wear it.

Where I do draw the line is when it impacts on the safety of others. Unlike surfing, a runaway board isn't likely to kill people or cut powerlines. A runaway kite on the other hand will. 5 incidents in 5 days at Altona, mostly from newbies means it impacts on whether i have the ability to continue kiting there, and that means this is not about some do gooders impacting on the freedom of others, its about some douche bags who don't give a **** about the rights of others to continue using a particular location.

If kiters want to teach themselves, then by all means, they should be legally allowed to go to some remote beach nowhere near any other kiters or people where they are welcome to engage in any form of darwin like behaviour, but if they want to learn in a location where there are other people and kiters who are at risk through their irresponsible behaviour, then they should do so with instruction.

The only thing that bugs me more than do gooders who want to make the speed limits rediculously low is people who think that freedom gives them the right to endanger other people "because its their right". Next you'll be arguing that drink driving should be legalised because it impedes on your right to go out drinking and drive your car home. Its this exact behaviour that gives the do-gooders ammunition to impose these rediculous controls because you prove that some people are incapable of self control and therefore require laws to keep them in line with the rest of the population.

AMEN Brother!!!!! Well said!!!! I rest my case your honer...
