You know its funny, im a chick and a kiter and an instructor of kiting (6 years) and windsurfing (9 years). Once upon a time i was so keen to get more girls into both kiting and windsurfing and it frustrated me so much...then after trying so hard and basically getting so few girls involved, i found it was useless trying, I came to a few conclusions -

a)it takes a certain kind of chick who wants to do it...
b) one thats ready to take the challenge and approach a school/friend to teach them ....and
c) one that doesnt really care if she is a girl or not!

this i think is the main factor. the kind of girl that wants to go to "girls only" things are not confident to do it in the real world, (which is unfortunatly male dominated due to genetics = genes and muscle make up etc).

For all the kiting chicks in this discussion - we are it! we are the girls that kite and we would like each other cos we have the same kind of interests. I bet you girls didnt have to go to a girls only clinic....no... cos we like hanging with the boys!

More girls will come, they are coming and it takes good instructors, male or female to teach everyone to enjoy kiting weather its dangerous or not.

Ive offered heaps of girls free kiting lessons at my school so i wasnt the only gilr kiter and potentially Ill have someone my strength and abilty to one day kite with....but like someone said earlier - 'they have to want to do it themselves' no matter of the consequences. (ie $$, danger, lack of other women etc)

thats my theory anyway...
cheers
p.s. what kite chick would really want a pink kite and harness anyway?

MY girls loooove pink and all the girl stuff, and are mad keen to give kiting a go. I do think they'd be better with a female instructor because they are still young. I just hope they're just as keen after the lesson - lol. Hmmm, I'll see if they wanna have a go sooner rather than later. Think I'll talk to an instructor.

I agree that there is not a lot of point of trying extra measures to get girls into it if they are not keen, and, besides, I am only interested in affirmative action if it benefits me(Just kidding!)

But I think if anyone wants more girls in the sport then they have to get better coverage and publicity of the things (events and the like) that the kiter girls are into. Apparently there was a huge increase in girls surfing after the Blue Crush movie (which is almost painful to watch) but had a huge impact. All you need is a multi million dollar, internationally distributed Hollywood movie! Easy!

Funny thing I have noticed about this country...seems to be no extreme sports on mainstream TV (except surfing, the national religion). Am I missing something?

Hi All,

I am a girl and I chose Kitesurfing cause it looked like so much fun which it is! . I am becoming a adrenalin/adventure person but I wouldn't have classed myself one from childhood. In fact I hate hights/speed and not particularly keen on the water. But I love kitesurfing which involves all these things

Why did I decide to do it? I don't really know but I convinced my bf to come and do lessons with me which probably helped now we are both addicted!

I would like to have more girls out there, mainly so that when we have social events there are girls to talk to, otherwise there is no real difference out on the water guys or girls we are out there having fun and looking out for each other.

I think that if the girls are interested they will get the lessons and give it a try - there are always girls getting lessons at st kilda. One of the first questions I asked was how much strength you needed which I was told not that much but you will get a full body work out which s all true!

Having read this thread in it's entirety, I've just about come to the conclusion that there is little for us to do on the matter. Ideas, at this point in time, seem to indicate two theories:

(A) A girl/woman/chick has to want to do it for her own reasons.

(B) Breed your own kiting girls.

Theory (A) would probably be well assisted by some media coverage, as suggested by stnkygoat, and some Real World kiting role models. Ultimately this is up to the girls themselves and the likes of Hollywood.

Theory (B) is up to the blokes. Your testosterone level is what will determine the sex of your child. So throw away your tight underwear and tight pants, give up drinking and smoking, and most importantly keep kiting. It's your job now to be role models for your daughters and to encourage them into the sport when the time is right. Oh yes... and of course this will mean that you will actually have to have intercourse and a protracted relationship with a member of the opposite sex.

I can see theory (B) is flawed already.

Silviu,
my fine foreign friend...
"
Adj. 1. protracted - relatively long in duration; tediously protracted; "a drawn-out argument"; "an extended discussion"; "a lengthy visit from your mother-in-law"; "a prolonged and bitter struggle"; "protracted negotiations"

Commonly referred to, in the past, as marriage (or at least some legal resemblance of said). Seemingly not as common as it once was, perhaps another side-effect of global warming.

holy cow. What an unexpected surprise to see. Thanks for putting some air onto the coals- I would like to keep this little fire burning but have random time on the net (not having a desk job I guess).

Hers how I got into it: summer holls at brighton beach -syd I was hypnotised by these beautiful colourfull things floating and seeming to glide smoothly in the sky- and these little people with arms outstretched on a board in a froth of white water, getting generally spanked around. I actually started helping one of the guys untangle the biggest spagettie mess of his lines. I figured couldn’t be harder than undoing what the cats used to do to nans wool. 6 years later im still good mates with that old crew and have always felt respect and friendship from them. All my learning was by watching (watching what not to do in some cases) and borrowing gear. Id done ballet for 16 years prior to that – I had no board skills, upper body strength, or hint of a tan! I guess it was love at first sight complete with a stubbornness of nature that ignores little things like gender.

What I dig is that it draws people from all walks of life, mates that are mates through kiting would otherwise have no other reason to cross paths in life. We have got something good here, and it’s the community spirit that can help it get better.

nonikkers, caela, snowman I love your storys!
I wanna hear some others cause they are all unique.

Zephyr, I used to think like you too, till I experienced the friendship of a kindred kiterchick. Someone as nutts as me!! My boys are all mates but a girlfriend is somehow different. Then I go and move interstate. And now have a bit of time and energy to, um, justify my addiction by spreading it?

Ps, im working on a pink board. Why oh universe are most board graphics butt ugly… if there is a god oh hear my cries of despiration!!! (arhhh arhhh not another monster)

As a lesbian i can prob comment truthfully about this subject.
Most girls would like to kite but im sure some find it imtimidating, however once more girls get into this sport others will see and follow suit. This is where i come in!

I would like to do research into this dilema and kindly offer dinner and drinks to many kiter/like to be kiter girls purely for the purpose of establishing the psyche of the Woman. This research may lead to more girls wishing to take up this sport and more importantly have a great night out.

Lets promote female equality, lets all burn your bras and strip off and run freely to the water together and feel liberated, and remember the saying "Women Can Do Anything" so dont be a procrastinator pick up that keyboard and contact me and get this research under way.

Anakin's Storey (wannabe Skywalker)

Background Sport
– Do ballet and yoga count as sport? Some sailing and flying experience helped with the theory part.

Water History – Extreme fear of drowning and biting creatures causing hyperventilation!

Reason to try Kiting – For a year or so Ang (Van Hoof) and my wind mad husband saying “common try it just once”. They wore me down.

First Kite Experience – Hanging onto husbands harness on the promise that I’d stay mostly above the water. The promise was mostly kept but my pants weren’t.

Learning
First lesson: Flying trainer kites in torrential rain and still smiling. Second Lesson: Paul and Ang (Zero Gravity) had me skidding sideways on board grinning & yelling “I can’t recall…….how do you stop this thing!” Seven months later I still can’t wipe the smile from my dial and the learning continues.

Personality – Tomboy….maybe?? I know how the internal combustion engine works. I love girly things (not in the same way our beloved Paulio does!)

Encouraging Friends – I have girlfriends that rock climb and mountain bike ride and they perceive kiting as too dangerous even though my injuries have been no more than small bruises and theirs more major. I hope to convince them otherwise eventually. With their barbie doll looks the boys will be eternally thankful to me for persisting!

It is a little intimidating when you are the only girl on the water. You are more obvious and it feels at times that all eyes are watching which is embarrassing when you aren’t yet as proficient as you can be.

To arrive at an almost self-sufficient level, I’ve needed more assistance, encouragement and hand holding than most men would need or want. Maybe other girls have less support or are less stubborn and give up?

If you want board graphics that are ace, checkout cardboarding.com website and see their designs.

If they havent got what you want, you can design your own and get it made up.

I just got my first board from them & the graphics are wicked! I went for the "Chomper" top & bottom...it came out brilliant.

Cant comment on the boards ability yet tho - damn Melbourne westerlies - we have gone from boardies & air-con to 4mm wetties and heating in a week...

As soon as I promised fish & chips after kitesurfing, then all day it was "can we go yet, can we go yet, can we go yet".

The moral of the story is that a little bit of bribery doesn't hurt either. Just a little.

Hi guys and Girls,

We were the school and instructors who ran the Kitegirls sessions at Kitestock just a while back. We had 11 women on the first day and then an additional 5 turned up on the Sunday. The ages, sizes, experience and motivation was as different as could be which shows that you cannot really pigeon hole or stereotype the type of ladies getting into the sport. All they really need is a spirit of adventure, a little self confidence, a caring and understanding instructor and a passion for excitement and the elements.

We have had more girls that ever before take on lessons and buy rider packages which shows a new level of commitment we haven't seen previously from the ladies. Most bought kites and are continuing to learn and progress.

In the upcoming year we will be conducting more kitegirls clinics, kitegirl introduction days and other new programs to aid girls getting into the sport. What I have noticed is the dropping number of girls who are training to be instructors. It used to be that around 12% of all instructors on the courses I have run were girls, but that has dropped to around 8% and the numbers that actually teach drop even further. C'mon girls, you have more than enough physical ability, mental ability and in most cases as much determination as most of the guys, not to mention make better instructors if you believe in your own abilities.

Being a kitegirl has little to do with femininity or being butch, career, physical ability, background or anything else. You can still kite, get in great shape, enjoy your career, have a great relationship, have fun, excitement and adventure, meet new friends and still radiate and enjoy your feminine energy.

Maybe it's time some guys found a little more respect and acted more like mature men and not like teenage boys. This one factor could have more bearing on the amount of new kitegirls entering the sport than any other single thing.

C'mon guys, and girls step up!

Good winds,

Naw, seriously.......as a man, it is important to treat women who kite with care... Yesterday I took my daughter on a downwinder and she got seasick! Can you believe that? And then it was cold....etc. and that is when you need to be careful as a man and just take them home to their comfy amenities...like hot shower.

sounds a bit like toby. I think its an excuse to get me to help pack up his gear.
