I believe it's based upon taxable income per your tax return. So you should be good as long as you have been lodging them...

What a waste of time.... Rudd should do something useful with the money. He should put ALL of it into schools/health and infrastructure. He not Saint ****in Nick!

Handing out free cash is a pretty narrow minded way of dealing with a financial crisis, this country is doomed if these turkeys remain in power much longer. Yeah it would be nice to have a free board, it will soften the blow when we are all out of work. Higher earners pay stupid amounts of bloody tax but are entitled to nothing ever, seems pretty screwed to me.

Sounds like Keynesian theory with a bit of Zimbabweanism to follow.

No worries, when oz is hocked to the limit, we can follow the Zim model and print more money or forward sell our commodities.

By the way, there is no hand out to those earning over $100k. Their gift will come later as increased taxation to pay it back.

Make hay while the sun shines, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Counter-cyclical spending - yay.

Its funny how some journalists are arguing that it may result in inflation - my God! Have they seen the CPI lately?

Inflation will only result if there is not enough output capacity in the economy to meet demand, and judging by the number of sackings and general lack of business - without conducting a survey it should be evident there is plenty at least in the short term.

In a way it does make sense to spend money on the 'essentials' before simply handing it out to the public especially when pushing the socialist line. Remember that some money IS being given to schools for construction - something like $200,000 each I heard on the radio.

The objective of this move is not so much socially as it is economically orientated(they aren't too far apart anyway); it is meant to stimulate domestic consumption within the economy. By giving that money in small denominations to many people with low incomes you're going to have a lot of spending in the economy which will hopefully slow currently increasing unemployment, increase GDP by a forecast 0.5% etc etc etc.

It is convenient that low income families with children are more likely to spend a greater proportion of the handout when compared with those on higher incomes who have a higher propensity to save it; means that the government can whip out the "oh we love to help the battlers" card, even though as schmik pointed out if that were the case - more would be spent on health care/schools.

To inject a tiny amount of seriousness into this ... if you want to do something good with the money, spend it on going on kiting trips. The worst thing you can do is spend it on imported kites and boards.

You can spend the money on food and accommodation. The money goes to people working in shops, pubs and restaurants and motels and camping grounds and whatever. They spend it locally on other essential stuff and it all goes around ... as it's supposed to. Everybody wins.

The government immediately gets 10% of it straight back in GST and taxes on wages and stuff.

It's a trick.

Krudd will give us all $950, then when he runs out of money he will raise taxes and take the $950 away again.

The net result is that we all spend $950 of our own money.

Money that will probably go overseas anyway...

I am eligable... but what a farking waste of money this all is. $42 billion.... that is SO much money from a GDP point of view. Invest in the countries manufacturing capabilities to EARN more money, make the whole banking/loan industry non privatised so the greedy banks dont keep earning there billion dollar profits and ripping off the REAL aussie battlers.

This country is going to be in so much debt, that we will be paying it off still in 100 years.

Are you kidding?

Do you think these people who earn under the eligible amount actually pay much for this?

That's right, but it would be so unAustralian to suggest that perhaps the 'rich people' who pay a crapload of income tax and who's company taxes make up around 35% of tax revenue are to be thanked when they paid most of this, and will pay for what we are yet to borrow.

Oh... and they get none of it - such is Australian politics.
