Yeah I noticed a significant improvement in the ride style of any of the C-kiters going onto the Rebel. It's been hard for anyone to choose what kite to get next if you started to learn kiting last season. Many of us went on entry level C-kites and then couldn't decide wether we should go for a kite with 100% depower. Then came the rebel that had no bridles and simple 5 line setup like the C-kites we had. Gotta say I didnt' like the Black either....but now Im glad I got it. It looks pretty cool being predominately black! But not a big fan of the graffitti!

is black a good color for kites in australia and WA in particular ???

i thought about that and took a white with pink LE...

do dark colors age the cloth or the kite quicker ?

I had a black SS Diesel, and it deifinitely shows the wear, way more than all my other kites in just about everu other colour imagineable. Yellow fades a bit too.

I know it has more of an affect on heat retention so you have to watch on how days if you leave it on the beach for any period of time.

agreed, awesome kite.
but.... yesterday i crashed it and while in the process of relaunching one of the lines got wrapped around the tip. it relaunched and then proceded to death spiral a number of times. so had to swim in
i'm sure it's not a fault of the kite, just let the lines go too slack.
alls well that ends well!
awesome kite

Gusty winds today Rebel was phenominal. No matter how much you depower this kite it seems to have no effect on flight characteristics.
Soooooooo much fun i'm still buzzing

Hi Paul J - how heavy are you?

I've got a 12m Rebel (85kgs) and want to buy a smaller one but not sure if I should go for a 9m or a 7m?

Anyone know the bottom end of the 7m? (I've checked the web site but am interested in peoples findings).

I am about 75kg, i also have a 7m rebel which is also a great kite not sure on the bottom end kind of depends on how you ride (under powered or over powered).the 9m is a sweet kite good bottom end and awsome top end ,i would go the 9m and 12m combo because that suits the gold coasts winds, just depends on your loacl winds

thanks paul

Can anyone comment on the performance of the 14m over the 12m? I have been reading a lot of reviews saying that 14m rebels and above are terrible.

Im 90kg and was thinking of a 14m 10m combo. Would a 12m 9m just be too small?

Cheers

I can't comment on the 12 Rebel, but I own a 14 and also a 9. Both great kites! At present, the 14 is actually my favorite. It's a very forgiving kite, has a substantial wind range (comfortable 9/10-22/23 knots - 68kgs), and provides really floaty jumps. If you're an intermediate rider that just wants to get out and boot around, pop a few jumps, etc. you'll love it! It turns plenty fast and responds well for me provided I keep sufficient tension on the rear lines. Perhaps if you're an advanced rider that is primarily focused on tricks then you should be looking at the 12 at the expense of some lower end wind range. I have yet to read anything negative about the 12.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. Im definately not an advanced rider and would hate to miss out on those couple of low end knots.

I had a go on a 12m vegas over the weekend and thought that was an awesome kite, but Im thinking that the rebel is definately the way to go.

Buschy did you have any probs tuning your 14m? I am reading that there are pretty big performance issues if you dont get the set up perfect. Can you comment on the turning speed of the 14m?

Thanks heaps

My previous kite was an 12m Vegas06. Might have been the one you tried last weekend! Sold it to a fellow in WA a couple of months ago.

I only had to make 1 adjustment to the Rebel 14's settings out of the bag. The rear lines were attached to the second knot (bar end) and I pulled them down to the third knot(knot closest to the bar). On the the kite side the lines were already attached to the back (outer) pigtails, which are the ones used to achieve faster turning according to the manual. Need to also double-check that all lines are of equal length. I tend to ride the 14 within the first 20-25% of the bars throw, unless very gusty, and on microhook in very light wind. Keeps the canopy looking nice and trim and kite responsive.

Thanks Paul, I think I will be going with the 9m and 20m lines.

On the 12m Rebel: Happy I got 12m rather than 14m for my weight (85kgs), but I also have a 15m hybrid for summer/lighter winds.
I've tried/owned a number of hybrids this year (Ion,Answer,Sonic)all in the 12/11m size. The 12m Rebel has the best bottom end along with the 12m Answer. More stable than Answer, more grunt than Sonic/Ion. Better pull through turns and more constant pull that the others (Answer is close) - this is the key for me, more of a C feel. Medium bar pressure - same as Answer, more than sonic/ion.
The only other kites that I haven't tried that may have this same feel is the Ozone Instinct and Slingshot Link - maybe a 5th line feel thing?

I have used the 12m Rebel 5 times now and everytime it just gets better as I get dialed in. Jumping is very easy and controlled. Turns great for carving of waves. Nice pull when surfing towards kite down wave. Nice pop for a flat kite.

Downsides: Need to tune the line lengths to suit your style - I've adjusted mine slightly after each session. If the back lines are too slack then you can loose steering input - I crashed the kite on my first session because of this! No one-pump and 5th line takes a little longer to set up - quick pack down though. I've added an oh-SH$t handle to one of the back lines as 5th lines may break in waves.

Overall I love the feel of this kite - I've tried a few hybrid/flat kites (no true bows) and this is the best for me so far. The others have all had bridles so this may be the key, not sure.

Has anyone tried 20m lines with these kites for wave riding?

Thoughts on the Rebel? Have just bought a 12m and have to say after
6 years riding it is on one of the sweetest kites i have flown, Have given it a good flogging in 18-20+ knots and cant really fault it,makes nice power with plenty of depower range and it turns almost on a dime on the slowest setting, not bad for a 12m all smiles and i love it so much i bought a 9m !

I keep the back lines on the back pig tails and tightened the back lines on the bar to the next knot. It turns alot faster!
My kiting has improved alot since getting this kite. Black with the pink struts looks AWESOME! I didnt like it at first but it looks cool in the sky! ...very rebelious!

this kite can REALLY jump!

Is anyone out there doing board offs/table tops dead mans/heart attacks on this kite? Are you hooking into the micro hook for the jump or using the stopper? or just holding the bar with one hand?

yeah it was surprisingly good.

totally unlike a bow/sle/same****(just marketing).

which i guess it isnt.

turning is weird but really nice, no loss of power in turns but no power spikes and required little pressure to get it to turn. smooth as.

i rate it.

but hey its basically a curvy wingtip c kite with a really tight 5thline

This has been asked before and im constantly getting asked about this:

Water relaunching the Rebel

It water relaunches VERY easy in fact way too easy sometimes! It's easy when you know the right technique!

I found keeping the kite directly downwind of you with leading edge down on the water...DONT bother trying to flip it on its back like C-kites. Just push that bar out and pull on one of the back lines and you can even hot launch it. If it falls to one side of the window when it hits the water you can pull the bar in and steer it up into the air.

If its on its back just use your 5th line and launch it like a C-kite. There are so many options.

My problem has been, as Carbine highlighted...going unhooked, wiping out kite fallson back 5th is as slack as anything...how do you go then??
I've launched when its been on its back but fifth has always been tight.

My technique was to swear really loud and keep swearing for about 30 to 40 seconds. The kite still didn't launch but hay its a work in progress. It also helps to keep swearing after you have had to swim in, clears the head so that you can concentrate when you detangle the lines.

Have worked it out.
Thing is tie a little knot in the fifth about 1-2 metres away from the bar, put the little red ball thing bar side of the knot.
Now when you drop the kite on its back the fifth never goes really slack......

On relaunch from here, keep tension on the cleat, ie grab it pull it in a bit...whilst also pulling on a back line. the kite should slowly come around and pop up.

sounds complicated....it aint.... does it work yep.

i dont know what you call that elastic cover thing that goes over the cleat? I pulled the rope out from it so i dont need to use it. you just have to remember if you want the cleat to lock onto it let the rope go in a vertical position ie up and down parralel with the kite lines. if you want to power up and let the rope out let the rope go in a horizontal position ie parralel with the kite bar.

i dont ever use that elastic thig on the cleat? what is is for???? lol
