You should attend the Windsurfing Victoria Open meeting this Wednesday specifically arranged to discuss this issue and determine a course of action.

Sounds like you have valuable intelligence of the Parks Vic decision making process.

I'll be there!

Drat sorry I have work in Sydney. I'll be there if I can get an earlier return flight. I really think that we need to put pressure on Council to form a policy for the reduction in length of the swimmers-only zone. Once that policy has been formalised then we can use it to put pressure on Parks. Gets those Emails in to the four addresses listed.
There is a safety issue in pushing the wind sports downwind from the prevailing southerlies, towards the rocks and groins. There is also the fact that Council had a policy of encouraging personal activities and fitness.

I was at the meeting last night, kiters were under-represented so I got drowned out a bit 'cos the windsurfers are mostly frustrated by the changes at Dendy and Elwood, combined with that seems to be vigorous (and according to some people, unreasonably aggressive) enforcement by the local lifesaving clubs. However, I have emailed my thoughts on Hampton beach (ie, can we put the marker for the northern edge of the swim only zone back to where the trial area was working) to the president of Windsurf Victoria, who chaired the meeting. Is anybody up for helping with this one?

I was there too. Yes, I am keen to help out for a better outcome at Hampton.

The new marker locations have effectively shut down windsurfing at every location in the Bay - its a disaster for them. Moving the poles about 50 along the 200m line (even though they are already in) would rectify the situation for them.

Some of the poleys were grouching about losing "windsurfing zones" and the new zones being "windsports zones" for kiting and windsurfing. Some were also saying that kitesurfers (beginners mostly) are a problem for them when they drop kites on them and get in the way. I pointed out that winsurfers and kiters mostly happily co-exist at Green Point and Mentone.

I think we all need to be considerate of windsurfers and try to ensure that newbie kiters don't impact on them too much. I have a couple of mates who windsurf on come on trips with us so its no big deal for the two sports to operate together in the same area.

United we stand, divided we fall.

Hi everyone. Please keep up communication with both the three Central Ward councillors and also the Bayside officers. There is good news in that Council have passed a resolution on 26th March to:
* Write to Parks seeking a review of the areas and the definitions.
* Write to the Assoc of Bayside Municipalties and local MPs seeking their support.
I would post a copy of the PDF letter from Council here, but blowed if I can work out how to do it! I have sent a copy to SHQ and RPS.

Hi everyone. I have rung Parks about this and they tell me that the prime mover on this Swimming Only zone was Bayside Council.

You might want to put some pressure on the three local councillors for the area: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected].

The Director City Strategy is [email protected]

PS Parks say that SUP boards are OK under the new rules, but kayaks are forbidden. Blowed if I can work out the logic of that!

The logic of that is that Felicity Frederico ([email protected]) is a well known person on a SUP, all makes sense that the council was behind all of this (and hence lack of consultation). they want to keep their high ratepaying parents with kids in nippers content. By the way the best way to upset the council is through the local leader they love stories where the council stuffs up.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought that 'Swimming only' meant 'Swimming only'. At least it does if you read PV's own guidelines and definitions (unless I have misunderstood?). How is it, then, that SUP are allowed and not a kayak? is the only difference standing up vs. sitting down? It would seem that an exception has been made for reasons which we are left to work out? Happy to eat humble pie if someone can advise that the rules mean otherwise...
See you Weds...

or maybe because SUPs cannot go faster than 5 knots!

Back in March earlier this year, I submitted a Notice of Motion to the Bayside Ordinary Council Meeting (Refer to Bayside City Council meetings - Minutes 25 March) advocating for a review of the new swimming and boating zones, associated definitions, and seasonality. Part of this motion also included writing to MPs, and the Association of Bayside Municipalities (ABM) seeking support. Parks Vic attended the last ABM Meeting, and advised that the zones would be reviewed. (Refer to ABM.org.au Minutes 31/7). This review is expected to be completed by November. It would be worthwhile putting in submissions to ParksVic ASAP from a kiteboarding and windsurfing perspective, to be considered as part of the review.
