The several ways of dealing with the ties that I know of are using wire and pulling them out when the resin is still in the gel stage
Using small plastic cable ties and just snipping them off and sanding the remains smooth while radiusing and before glassing the outside is another method
I have heard of people using nylon fishing line and lacing the parts together but havent tried that myself
Pulling the wires and the cable tie method has worked for me
If you dont pull the wires a flap disc on an angle grinder will deal with them when you are radiusing the ouside before glassing the edge
You will have landyacht commenting it looks like a Kiwi yacht painting it grey[}:)]

I was waiting for a comment of the colour and kiwi yachts Looks like it means buisiness, reminds me of a military jet.

Thanks for the stitch n glue hints Hiko, I like the sound of the cable tie method myself.

The next seat will have a blunter nose as this one was made with ply of a limited length, and therefore the pedals cant be pushed all the way forward for a tall pilot. As it is I think I could use the extra length myself [}:)]. Next time it'll work better...

Drum roll please...it works! Not that I had a doubt Got the craft together on Saturday and was out sailing Sunday (there was no wind Saturday). First impressions are that I like the mini yacht a lot, easy to set up and nowhere near as liable to flip over as I thought it would be. The steering works like a dream, that good that if I hadn't had the seatbelt I think I would have been rolling down the asphalt a couple of times Time to start a second one I think

My mini explorer. Many thanks to Paul for making and sending me the sail, I wouldn't be finished without his help.

And here the whole lot (except the mast) packed up and ready to take away sailing.

Set up again and having fun at the Bendigo livestock exchange (near Huntly). There is no stock trading on the weekends so the place is mostly deserted.

Another shot sailing. The wind was a bit blustery, it came and dropped a lot, but most of the time you could keep moving (and sometimes a LOT more )

I even got Dad to jump in and have a go. He had a couple of good runs and was surprised by my 'toy' landyacht.

Just thought I'd add a shot of the sailing area, or part of it. Not a bad venue for miniyacht sailing. I'll get a google maps image to show where we were.

Thanks for watching.

Congratulations Lachlan looks great and you picked a great place to sail it.

I remember how thrilled I was when I sailed mine for the first time also with a sail courtesy of Paul Day.

Well done.

Thanks for the compliments. Yes, I'll get a helmet before Im sailing again. The one I had earmarked for use was left in the shed and full of cobwebs. After I cleaned it out, I left it where I wouldn't forget it and therefore forgot it.

The mini explorer handles much like the larger yacht to me, this surprised my quite a bit. The turning circle is smaller of course but both have a little too much travel in their front wheels. The mini feels faster as its lower to the ground, its more exciting to sail which I like. Im not too sure how its performance is compared to the Iron Chook, Im sure it will go faster. Will get both out sometime for a closer look.
EDIT: one thing I found was that the mini will do a gybe much easier (ie: less violent) than the Iron Chook. Its hardly noticable, I was having fun doing a few circles (thats why there are all the black marks on the asphalt ).

Glad I could be of service Joe. It seems Im similar to you, nothing gets me moving better than seeing another yacht getting built/finished. Hope your outsourcing doesn't make you wait much longer.

Here are some google maps pics of the sailing site. We only used the south east corner and eastern side, I did a couple of laps around the south-eastern yards. The western side would have been better but there was stock being unloaded for Monday trading so we stayed away.

I was out and about in the wind yesterday, at the same location, and managed to scare myself. I hooked the speedo up to see what I was getting and now ask the question; how in hell does one get the nerve to go over 50-60kmh in these things?

My best yesterday was a hair over 40kmh. Faster could have been achieved but due to wind direction I only had a short stretch of road. I hate to admit it but I couldn't keep my nerves together to go for maximum, Im quite ashamed .

Thanks for the paint scheme thoughts. Will finish off and get a pic in the register this week.

Thanks for that revelation Lachlan
I feel much better now I thought it was just me!
Had another great day today in the mini with plenty of wind
For me anyway the more time sailing the more relaxing it becomes as I find out more about the yacht and what it can do
Still a way to go yet!
cheers Hiko

as you get better you will start to learn to drift drive it a lot more, that way you dont need to slow down so much at the end of your run, you'll learn when to turn and which way, and youll just keep pushing yourself for that extra KPH.
dont forget that you do have a reef point and your sail was recut with plenty of top for lighter winds. one thing youll discover is that sometimes letting out the sail will make you go faster

Yep, found that one out the fun way. Almost found myself up the wrong way due to it, felt like the tyres were going to peel off the rims (must remember to bump the pressure up a bit before going out again).

A good session on the tarmac can take out a pair of rear tyres.

The sound of the rubber peeling off is music to the ears but not the pocket.
