Visited Ken to drop off the deposit for the sail. I was glad to see he had almost as many pictures of landyachts up in his workshop as he did yachts!! Top bloke!!

Then went straight out to David's to pick up my mast, boom and axles. He's done a great job and couldn't be more helpfull. His good wife even fed and entertained the kids while he and I talked landyachts!!

Then went to Mullins wheels to get the wheels, but unfortunately they aren't open on Saturdays. So I stopped past Paramount Browns on the way home and they had 3 wheels and (wrong) tyres in a discount bin for $19.00 each. As Mullins charge $18.00 for the wheel alone I grabbed them. Now I just have to get the correct tyres.

Unforunately I ran out of time and missed the bearing shop so that'll have to be next weekends trip.

Hopfully I can assemble it tomorrow and post a pic of what she looks like so far.

Well my bargain wheels turned out to be too wide for my stubbs so I'll return them rather than stuff around cutting them to size. So today I went and got some of the recommended wheels from Mullins Wheels ($88 for 3 wheels tyres and tubes) and got the bearings from Gardners ($13 ea) so now I have a rolling chassis and mast & boom.

Just need the sail (5 weeks to make ) and the pulleys and fittings and I'll be done.

I've posted a picture in the photos section taken tonight. I'll get a better one with the mast on next weekend and post that.

Well my landyachts back out at Davids house. He has very kindly offered to install the safety belt and he's reinforcing the axles with dowell, which is all done now.

But while its there he asked if I was prepared to display it along with 4 other club members yachts in a ALYC display at the 4x4 and adventure show. Davids going to lend me a club sail for the display as mine probably won't be ready by then.

So if you're in SA you can head along and take a look on 12th-14th October at Morphetville race course (I believe, please correct me if I'm wrong)

Picked up my sail and it looks great. Ken has double checked the size is legal and now has the sail plan drawn out on the workshop floor. He has made a couple of improvements over the previous sails he made so, even though he honoured my quote, from now on they will be about $570 but get a quote first.

Is that the sail in the photos fron morphetvale.?
you will need to drop it lower on the mastas at the hieght its at the yacht will be a bit tippy. Once again the sail makers are avoiding high aspect squarer topped sails . Youve probably wasted 250 mm mast hieght already. Is the sail 5m2 or 5.5m2?. A pocket will account for about 0.46m2 and should be account for in the measuring . you might want to experiment with raking the mast a couple of degrees as youre battens should be parallel with the ground when fully sheeted.if you get the mast rake/ body weight balance right youll find that you can start to reduce the amount of pulleys that youll need

Yep that's the one. David and Ross tell me I need to take about 6" off the mast, but to start at 4" and see how it goes. I'm not sure if its 5 or 5.5, I'll find out from Ken.

Dont cut your mast , just lengthen that rope at the top.and play with the height. when fully sheeted you should be just under the boom

Well as you'll see in the photos section it is now complete. The last step was to borrow my mothers sewing machine and upholster myself a cusion. Turned out really well IMHO considering I don't know jack sh|# about sewing!!

Now its complete, you can thank me for the drought breaking rains that will hit Adelaide for the next few months

OK hills now to rig it properly. The boom shouldbe hard up under thesail , not hanging around way down below. Pull it up. ypu should have a rope around the mast from the front eye,and a SEPARATE one around the boom. the same applies at the other end. one rope to the boom , another adjustable one to the outhaul. when this is set you will see that you can lower the sail 50-60 mm at least.
the base of your sheeting is too far forward. edge it back. when sheeted in hard the boom rowlock should not be hard up against the mast but back off the mast by 1-2cm.. the sheeting should go straight up and down.
make sure you have some sacrificial ally on the back of the mast where it contacts the mast step otherwise you will chew out the mast and it WILL snap.
your getting there

yep, they were there, just not adjusted as you said above.

ok, the base pulley blocks are in an adjustable stay channel so I can move them back one notch, which will take the back one to about 1.5cm from the rear edge of the mount in the fibreglass seat. Would that still be too far forward?? (I'll post a pic). If so could I move the pulleys on the boom forwards?

The base of the mast has a plastic sleeve so there is no contact between the mast and the mast hound. Should I still put in a sacrificial block anyway?

the pulley location is at the point where Id have to see it and try it . you could basically sheet it in hard , tie it off , then sit back and see how it looks.
