There used to be details on the Hartley association Web site about how to seal up the mast so that it floats in case of capsize. This prevents the boat from turning completely over and aids with righting. The other tip was to not have too much buoyancy under the side deck as it makes a capsized boat float too high in the water and harder to pull upright.

Having said that... the link I posted earlier was not for a ts16 but some other unidentified 18 ft "Hartley" without a cabin, which i couldn't find in the Hartley plan catalogue.

I might have a spare mast "swivel" in the shed that you could use (I assume the seller means a mast base that attaches to the cabin top - Hartley masts don't swivel, but they do pivot for raising and lowering)

Looks like an A class too. That is an exceptional buy!

It also says there is a hand operated pump, so nothing to worry about as long as you have a strong arm ????

But seriously, take a screwdriver and tap the handle all over the hull and listen for any dull thudding which could indicate rot. Check the join at the centreboard case and where the bungs come through the transom. Pull up the floor boards and check all the frames.

My hartley used to take on water through the centreboard pivot bolt which is quite common.

The seller isn't specific, he might just mean it has a low freeboard and water splashes over the side
