What do the rules say about 'kneel down' paddling? While it looks like a tail wind easterly, there may still be sections that are into the wind. I find SUP can be very slow and tiring in this situation. Is it OK to kneel down?

Good luck everyone for the race today. Get out there and have some fun
Currently the wind is 24 knots gusting 30 knots from the south east
I got my money on Simper for first

I think it was Mike Galvin that won. Not sure where Michael Simper came but all I know is that I copped an absolute flogging
Does anyone know what the board Mike Galvin was on? All I know was that it was a borrowed 16 footer or there abouts that he had never paddled before from chatting to him before the race.

Heh Adam nice to put a face to an avatar. How did you go? Did you enjoy your first race?

The guy who won was on a SIC (sandwich island composites) F16 hollow carbon fibre board. These boards are made by Mark Rapphorst(?) in Hawaii.

He was motoring. I thought was catching him at one stage and then turned the corner and realised why because at that stage there was a 20 knott head wind

I tell you who i was impressed with was the guy who came in third in front of me. He was on a 10'6 Naish and was flying. That guy must have had 25 weatbixes for breakfast.

Time for a nana nap will post some photos soon.

cheers

Good to meet you too Reagan, I also noticed the guy on the Naish with the wooden paddle. Goes to show that its the engine powering the stick that makes the difference.
My mistake was using too long and hard paddle strokes and trying to muscle it rather than shorter, quicker strokes. I'll learn for next time.
Its got me inspired to do some training though!

Yeah i thought the guy with the wooden paddle would burn himself out in the first k or so. His paddle rate never varied from what I could see. Reminded me of the Eveready bunny. Awesome effort. How fast would he be on a larger board???
Definately have to start training now for the Rotto race.

I'll be up for any training runs. Don't know if I'll be able to keep up with that nice looking 12' Glide of yours though.

Hard work on the sections into the wind but had a great morning. Dispite the flabby gut I felt like an athlete hanging out with all the fit and healthy clubbies. Good to meet the forum regulars and see what people are riding.
Results are now up.

Race results are up on the Classic paddle Swan river Perth Site.
I will have to rework my srategy next year and not rely on picking off the stragglers one at a time as exhaustion sets in ........from the back of the pack......yeah right......
that head wind was a right pain in the a@#se....
but mission accomplished...finishing that is.

Here are some photos of the event.

Sorry my race support team was not positioned correctly to get good (in focus) shots during the race

Checking out all the wonderful boards including the DC 16 Black Pearl

Chating with Simeon(?) from Norway who did it on his naish 10'

The worst part of the race felt like i was going backwards most of the time

So glad I took a camel back I was sucking down that water like there was no tomorrow

Absolutely Buggered at the finish

Thanks Adam, yeah we should organise a paddle/surf one of these days, have not had a surf/paddle up your end of town so would be keen.

How did you pull up after the race, any sore muscles

Yeah I'm a bit sore today! Looking at the last pic, do you use a really long paddle?

I do prefer my paddles a little longer, I think using the various methods around for paddle sizing should of been 80 inches but I made it 81 or 82 inches long.

great to meet everyone and race......can't wait until the next one, hopefully sooner rather than later.......The race presented some challenges; those that entered know the feeling of battling a twenty knots on the nose and that going backwards feeling. The pins have good speed.. Hope to see you all soon on the water.....

Hey Reagan, that is classy paddling in that last photo. No wonder you came in at the front of the field.

In my rowing days we would have called those good 'puddles'. A good size puddle meant lots of power. No wonder the shaft is bending. And they're close together, which means a high stroke rate too. Fast!

You must have had the finish line in sight!

You guys will have to come and do a downwinder with us from Sandtracks to Nth Cott. Or go up and do Triggs to Hillarys for the northern mob. Will be interested to see how your board goes in ocean conditions Zimbo.

Hahah thanks, its funny how you seem to paddle faster and stronger when you know there are people watching or taking photos
