Yep it's Laird again, but this time being interviewed by Gerry Lopez specifically about SUP. Has really interesting viewpoints on where standup is headed, especially at places like Jaws.

This is a great article for the 'not yet converted' - Legion and Doggie take note

Here's the link - gets interesting from page 2 onwards:

There's a vid at the end with some different stuff in it as well. Thank God it's Friday

Both Lopez and Hamilton are heavily involved with the commercial side of stand up paddling so it's kinda obvious that they are gunna talk it up because its in their best interest financially if the sport grows.

It makes me laugh that stand up paddlers are still putting all their energies into justifying what they do rather than just shutting up and doing it. For the last coupla years I hear surfers asking sup'ers why they do it and I hear the same old answers: "its good for core strength" "its good when the surfs flat or tiny or too fat" "its a great way to share something with the family" blah blah blah ! When people ask me why I do it I say "cos it's good fun" - so does anyone else do it cos its just good fun or am I missing something

Ahh, I thought that was the tone of the interview (ie, it's fun). I'm not interested in justifying it personally, couldn't give a fugg what people think, just thought it offered some interesting insights into the possibilities amongst other things, eg hitting Jaws and so on.

Agree, I dont justify why I SB. I do it cos its what I like. If I wanted to stand up all the time (I cant actually do SUP anyway because of my back) I would do it.

Hey Billboard, I do it (SUP) as it's good fun. Don't practice that much, don't really care that much. But it's good fun. Get to surf again on the crowded Nothern Beaches, away from the crowds, a thing that frankly I'd given up on.

It makes me laugh that tools like you are still putting all their energies into online forums just to have a whinge. Look at that other thread, started with the best intentions, but then highjacked by people seeing it as an in to diss the entire sport of SUP.

Nothing too personal, maybe I'm the one that's missing something from your post, but this has been a bit of a common theme of late on these forums. I ride mountain bikes, but I don't go on road bike forums and write them off, how stupid would that be? Not to mention a pointless waste of my own time.

GET A LIFE

billboard, doggie and legion, why bother with the sup forum. i just don't get. for instance i don't like mals and boogies, but i sure as hell not gonna waste my energy on their forums telling them that

the time spent being negative on the sup forum would be better spent with some uplifting inspired threads on the shortboard amd longboard forums don't you think

go surfing, and peace and love and understanding

Legion & Doggie I won't bite ,I'll let you p!ss on each others leg for this one.

Great point here:-

Do the math. Most surfers really are leg weak. We’re more like swimmers where we have big upper bodies and bird legs. And when you get a wave that’s a minute long, you’re shot, your legs are like rubber.

Reminds me of a video I saw of Andy Irons when they were somewhere in Mexico (I think) when they were on the float plane , they landed at some insane break and pumped up the rubber duckie and headed out to the break for these really long waves , Andy was back in after 2 waves with shot legs.

Yeah, that was a great point. So true. I mean, after paddling around for a surf I come to the beach, crawl to my wheelchair and then wheel myself around all day long never using my legs. If only I SUPed that'd make all the difference, I'd have tree trunk legs. Today's a light day, I did 1.5 x bodyweight deadlifts in the morning, 1000 skips on the rope, rode 20min to work and shortly 20min home, and I'll do 45min of stretching tonight. But SUP would make all the difference to my puny shortboarder legs.

I cant remember the last time I posted something negative here. I post on these forums when Im at work and if I want to I will comment here. In the past I have had great contact with crew on the forum as well as longboards forum and even the windsurf forum as well sometimes. I have also said I come here to see pics of board construction ect as thats what Im interested in and you guys seem to post alot of build pictures ect.
In fact Lacey I have spoken to you at length about shortboards on this forum so where do you get off anyway??????

So, you would like me to be closed minded? I bet this the only forum that you visit.
In fact I was in the sailing forums the other day, some good reads and funny stuff but guess what, I DONT SAIL!!!!! But I enjoyed what I read. I also chat with the guys from the longboard forum and dont have a problem in there either. Guess what? I dont longboard either but I like the pics of boards and stuff that they put up and the blokes from there are laid back and have a sence of humour unlike some of the boring drips here(insert your name here if you like)

Dont tell me what I can and cant do here! Im sure that if I post something that is not in the seabreeze rules the forum admin will get in contact with me!!

Anyway I dont normally post on the weekends but Im at work so deal with it.....
