Nick Moloney went across some years ago on a windsurfer.
Someone last year crossed from Stanley to Tidal river (prom)
on a laser.....So really anything is possible...Use your imagination.

Should be able to tell you guy's all about a Crossing of the Bass Strait over the next few weeks, I'm heading for Melbourne next Wednesday to paddle across to Tassie leaving from Port Welshpool on Good Friday. The Crossing is to raise money for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation and two Honour to great men Peter Corbishley who has cancer, is paddling with us and made the canoes for the crossing and the late Greenpeace Skipper and "Rainbow Warrior Legend" Chris Robinson.

You can follow our progress on "Live" Google Map updates and other info on our website www.crossingforcancer.org and also my Blog.

As well as paddling, i will be producing a Documentary on the "Crossing" that Channel 7 have shown interest in starting from the Launch Dinner next Thursday at Crown Casino.

This would have been a perfect opportunity for Jamie to have done a SUP or Paddleboard Crossing, all the support and logistics are in place. Biggest problem would be trying to keep up with him

Cheers Rambo

I'm surprised that Jamie has never done Bass Straight on his kneel down board.

It would be great to see him team up with Dave and do it together on SUP's.

Thanks DJ, apart from paddling, the Doco will also feature the wild life and wilderness of the Bass Strait Islands as well as a past History of the area, so anyone planning a SUP crossing in the future will have an idea of what is out there.

A future SUP crossing accompanied by a sizable yacht looks to be very do-able, as long as there are no headwinds or unfavorable currents in the window of opportunity. I'll keep this in mind as we cross and should be able to give you a better "feel" for it from a SUP perspective doing an "Island Hop"

O yeah, as always there will be Cams on everything including a GoPro wide high up on the Support yacht mast for a birds-eye look on things and might get to launch the KiteCam as well, should be interesting.

Cheers Rambo

Hey Rambo.. The weather looks good for a push off Sat with the high directly over you..and then a north winds for a couple of days.

BTW.. How does 14 paddlers work with two boats.. (2x6) ? ..are two back ups ?

What time do you guys plan to head off on Saturday (or is that Friday)..and will you start from Port Welshpool or the Prom?

Good luck.

Sounds like a lot of hard work crossing the bass straight but that's what makes it so exciting and I'm sure someone like Jaime could do it, just think how much fun it would be in the open ocean riding some of those massive ocean swells the runners could be insane, the only thing that puts me off a bit is the cold.

Went across on the old Abel Tasman years ago , waves where crashing over the decks , my old man used to work on a Cray Boat around King Island and he used to tell me of some pretty wild times out their.I would be using a shark shield for sure!

Yep we leave Welshpool on Saturday after rigging and a few safety drills on Fri. Yes there are 2 backups, besides someone has to do the cooking. The highs look good eh, 44ft of outrigger sliding down a huge swell is an awesome feeling, packed my biggest steering blade. Leave for Melb in the morning.

Just a heads up.
There are about 8 rowboats heading off from Gero in WA to Sth Africa in the next week or so.
They have a back up boat etc but man that is a crossing.
Should be interesting to see how far they get.

For those interested.. It looks like they're about halfway there..

Jeeez they've been blessed with perfect conditions.. I think this pic is at the end of day three.. and they should be at Flinders Island now.
