Hey boarderpaul - how much is a premium quality longboard in NZ now? (a McT or similar) No I am not having a dig - the extra you guys pay for boards reallly blows but it isn't just sups - its all forms of surfboards.
The average price for a premium locally made longboard in Aus is about $1400 so in my books that makes a premium locally made sup a bargain at $1800 ish bucks. As to what the chinese/thai import sups are worth - I really have no idea of production or other costs so i am not qualified to pass judgement - but I do have an awareness of the blood, sweat and tears that go into many of our quality australian made boards and there are not too many if any aussie shapers getting rich making boards.
I guess its just the nature of our smaller population that will make it harder for the limited number of dealers to always be able to afford to carry much of a range of craft so good on the dealers who make the genuine effort and hopefully some of the good aussie shapers can help you guys out a bit and get some local boards in amongst your retail and demo stock.

Do I remember correctly , Was PSH going to go direct and bypass the dealer network if so, maybe the importer and retailers should be questioning PSH not the punters. I have no doubt if the deal was right PSH would sell to Kmart

Billboard, I have no Quibble with the cost(sorry goaty) of hand made Aussie shapes ,just the price(sorry again) of the mass produced board. Oh yeah and the attitude of "the spirit of Aloha " and the "Stoking us all out" stuff ,thats meant to make us feel all fuzzy

BP...gotta agree with you. I try not to get too involved in posting on the forum due to the amount of wank I see posted.

However, anybody that believes dealers etc are in this game for the love of the sport and are doing us a huge favour obviously believe in the tooth fairy as well. Get real

As someone so wisely said in a previous post when I questioned why an 11' SUP was $100 cheaper than a 9'6" (same brand)...it's supply and demand....basic principle of business. So please everyone don't bulls..t me. You go into business to make money, pure and simple.

I expect good up front and follow up service. If I have to pay premium for that service so be it. You get what you pay for.

Having said that there appears to be businesses out there that want to charge premium prices but duck for cover when follow up is required.

In this sport you really need to check out who your dealing with before you outlay the big bucks. Thankfully I've found someone through recommendations from this forum whom I trust.

As someone else said...."tread carefully"

Yeee haaa, Someone who understands my thinking

Like i have said all along there is a element of advertising here, Dont rush out and buy a board that is out now.. Wait another few months wast the start of you summer and buy our boards, Discounts are on the way but cant tell you what they are shhhhh its not realy a discount just maybe' its a advertising ploy.

Now dont jump on my arse for this but it seems clear to me.

The more this goes on and on the more is seems to go from yep something big is on the way, to we are doing out best but dont expect much as we have dealers to keep happy and over heads.

This is not pointed at any company just in general.

Boarder paul.. And proud of it

Hmmmm.....let me see....BC is a businessman making a product. How he runs his business is exactly that...his business. He is not in the business to be a benefactor to the great unwashed.

What's all the fuss; if you're not happy with his product or prices then don't buy PSH, it's that bloody simple.

Anyone would think that BC committed a crime because he wanted to make SUB's more affordable in his home country.

Some of you guys need to come down off your high horses and get a life. I for one am sick of the constant nitpicking and denigrating going on in this forum.

Time some of you got in the water and focused more on lifes pleasures.

I sincerely hear you mate. I guess if you could equate it very liberally to a car then a lovely new hand made morgan could be say $150k and my hyundai getz is say $13k then does that make a mass produced import brand sup worth about $125 in comparison to a local premium custom board. I dont have the answers mate and I dont think anyone is gunna serve them up anytime soon. I guess all we can do is have faith in our resellers/importers and trust they aint ripping us off hey.,

To me all Sup boards should be $1500 with grip

In nz we are paying $2200 to $2500 most with no grip and no paddle

Yeah and the tooth fairy should leave $4 not 2. I am so over all the whinging about the price of SUPs. If they are too expensive take up another sport, buy a 2nd hand one or make your own.

Are people supposed to work for nothing? Most Customs are around the $1800 mark for good reason. They are very labour intensive and a pain to manufacture. Pop outs are the price they are because of numerous things: tooling costs, manufacturing, freight, taxes, distributers, retailers, etc.

If I hear the China v local thing one more time I will scream. Just about every manufactured thing we buy/use is made in asia, that's the way it is. Sure some niche things like hand made furniture and surfcraft are still made here and that's great.

I have been into Mtn Bike for 5 years - now that's expensive!! Funny thing the local product - which is a cracker of a bike apparently - doesn't get a look in because it is too expensive.

Anyway good on AA for supporting his dealers who ultimately support the people that buy the products.

My last dh bike was over $10 000 , now thats an expensive bike , helps having a best mate whos dual world champ to give you hand me downs

AA,
I can't be stuffed reading this thread but I gotta say,
PSH, Naish and Starboard have the best act's so far with PSH probally leading slightly so really unless you are going full custom or make yourself, no one in Aust really has there s-hit in a sock yet so if you want a PSH, you pay what it cost - end of story.
Regards,
Scotty

Hey PeteMC,

Add me to your club, if you want it pay the money for a PSH pay it . If you dont there are more and more boards on the market all the time.

Soon in Melbourne you will be able to buy a SUP from Costco for abut $999, Oxbow also $999.

To see this topic come up in the forum frankly shocked me and I bet the PSH dealers would be shocked too. The content in my opinion should be discussion for the importer and his dealers only as they are the only ones that can effect the outcome.

To reduce the RRP either the Importer or the Retailer or both have to loose margin its that simple.

If the retailers dont like the new margin they will stock up on Naish or JP or JL and life will go on its that simple.

If the PSH volume drops too much the importer wont import or the other option is for Blane to come in direct.

I love my PSH boards because of how I feel when I ride them and the passion Blane has for doing what he does.

The rest is all white noise!

IMHO, yes I will say it again, surfed for years and met some wankers who think they know it all. I have met guy's such as AA and J at a demo day way back, and they are TFB's (top far-king blokes) and the retail store I buy my gear from are same same, yes its the ROAR crew.
Oh and one more yes,I ride and love my PSH.

What about a wholly Australian owned product line, designed by TOP OF THE LINE Australian shaping legends-BUT manufactured in Asia at one of the exact same factories that do one of the current top of the line name brand SUBs?

Coming to a beach near you......

I'd like to support that, provided that the product and service was world class!

But lets not kid ourselves if it was called JP-Australia - see the current discussion in the windsurfing forum:

I love the way some of you guys endlessly kiss the ##ses of your saintly local retailers of overpriced imported sups. Be realistic - other than your local shapers what choice do you have - 2 or 3 shops in sydney maybe the same on the gold coast and don't know how many in other capitals. We just come back from the states where you have choice and these guys HAVE to look after you and not piss in your pocket will fluffy demo days and promises of sensational after sales service and all the blah blah blah they dribble daily to their poor "buy from me or go without" customers. Yep, I have been riding a naish for a while and looked at other imports but now of late have ridden some really interesting and much more east coast suitable locally shaped boards and I am moving up to a bit of class and keeping my money right here in aus where it belongs.

i know there is a market for newbies starting out on sups and dealers have an important part to service, but for the life of me i can't understand why more people on the breeze aren't riding custom boards?

For me, Here anyway its a trust thing. If the shaper can shape what you want has he or she done many sup boards before. As the answear is mostly No

It does not want me to drop 2 grand for a hmm i hope it works.

So best to buy proven boards or at least from a shaper who has been in the big game side of this for yrs.

Hey Lacey,

I would have loved to have purchased a quality custom, but the shaper we use (and he is world class) was so backed up it was going to take 3 months + and at the time he also didnt do epoxy and couldnt source eps.

That has all changed now!

I cant wait to see the 6 - 8 demo boards in the pipe!

.....I am very clear on where I stand.

We only have a handful (of dealers) and they do an excellent job. Especially when it comes to knowledge, back up service and demo boards.

I am interested in what the consensus is out there –

My gut tells me that that is what most people want and without question the right thing to do for the sport and the brand and those who have supported us from day one.

For sure, I am putting it out there to test if my gut feel is correct, and I know not everyone will agree.

It is after all a forum!

I don't feel strung out by Blane because he is doing what he feel is best for his market and he has given us his full support to do what we think is the right thing for Australia.

Prices for Australia will be announced before Aug. 15th through our dealers and our websites.

For those that don't believe in the passion of dealers and people like myself, I fully understand the healthy dose of cynicism. But meet some of the crew like Ang, Jacko, Sessions and for that matter Sam from down the road at WS&Snow and you know these guys are legit, totally committed and helping to grow the sport.

Still cynical? Come to the Mambo I am pretty sure we will all be there!!

YES!! Three BIG things to look forward to - this Sunday, CASSO's new mag and the MAMBO!

Only 111 more sleeps to GO!

Well said AA, met you and J once,I listened to both of you and J mentioned the 10.6 wide is the board for me.I really questioned his advice (in my mind) gave it a go and loved it that much I traded my two month old Naish 11.4.btw,great board.
After spending years and wasted mega bucks on surfboards seeking the perfect match for me.I found the advice given first class.

Oh large white or black PSH tee coming my way soon
